Surely that can't be true? 115k deaths in a year due to "medical errors"? Also, whoever was trying to put the table together clearly struggles with descending order.
[–]CursingWhileNursing10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
To be honest, 115.000 deaths due to medical malpractice in a country with as many inhabitants as the USA are absolutely possible. According to this statistic from the CDC, 715.000 people died while being in a hospital in 2010.
Mind you, that is just the number of people dying in a hospital and medical malpractice is something that not only happens in hospitals. And quite often it is nothing especially dramatic, like a botched surgery, it's the little things that can kill you as well.
Sometimes it is someting that is almost trivial. I am a male nurse and I have seen things you patients would not believe. (sorry, could not resist)
There was one case were a nurse had to administer insuline. The documentation said "10 IE", which means "20 Internationale Einheiten" / "10 International Units".
That nurse read "101 E" instead and apparently she could not be bothered enough to wonder about some basic things, like... aren't 101 units a bit much? Isn't "101 units" a weird number? And where the hell did the I from the "International Unit" go?
Nope, she just happily applied the contents of a complete cartridge (which usually contains 100 units), then happily put a new cartridge into the pen and happily administerd one single unit more. And then the patient happily died from hypoglycemic shock.
Also, "medical malpractice" is not only things like adminstring the wrong dosage or handing out the wrong drugs. Let's talk, for instance, about the fascinating topic of bacterial infection. Please keep in mind that I can only speak about my experiences with the german health care system, as far as I know things are a lot better in US hospitals in this regard, but I am sure that things like this still happen.
Amongst people that are familiar with this topic, german hospitals are notorious, because here bacterial infections are rampant. When you are german and have to stay in a hospital in the Netherlands, for instance, they will automatically put you in quarantine for the first few days and run tests on you, because they see it as given that most germans by now are infected with some mean hospital bug.
Why that is? Because in Germany our politicians give a fuck. On average a nurse in the Netherlands has to take care of 7 patients tops. A swiss or french nurse - 8 patients. A nurse in the US - between 5 and 6 patients.
A german nurse has to take care of 13 patients on average. And when you have the nightshift on my ward (radio-oncology), you are responsible for up to 27 patients, many of them in need for extensive care. The workload is so high that none of us brings someting to eat anymore, because you will have no time to eat something anyway. During my last nightshift I could not even find the time to drink something or to go to the toilet.
In a work environment like this, bad things are bound to happen. You will make mistakes, no matter how careful you are. And quite often vital things like hand disinfection just do not happen anymore. Because some people are so occupied and exhausted, they sometimes simply forget it. Or because people try to save a few seconds (a proper hand disinfection takes at least 30 seconds) by skipping hand disinfection.
And as far as I am aware, I am the fucking only nurse on my ward that thinks you should desinfect your stethoscope and your blood pressure meter before going to the next patient. And don't get me started about physicians - apperently our doctors all are born aseptic.
Unnecessary bacterial infections are by now one of the main causes when people unnecessarily die in german hospitals and usually this is not filed as medical malpractice.
So yes, even if things are better in US hospitals, I think that number is absolutely possible or even higher, especially when you take the cases of medical malpractice into the equation that do happen outside a hospital.

115K is a wild estimate. I don't think it is something we can measure accurately because it would be required for someone to admit they made a mistake. Unless it completely obvious, I think someone would try to cover up their mistake. However administrative staff is mostly women, nurses are mostly women. I would double check everything they do. I stopped going for my yearly physical because dealing with doctors office's administrative staff is miserable: it takes 3 phone calls to change an appointment that is one month away.

Bear in mind that given the sheer volume of patients, and the fact that the Baby Boomer generation is now heavily into retirement and on the long way out, patient load in general is up. Add to that an exodus of experienced personnel with a newer influx of personnel which are largely inexperienced (and quite frankly incompetent in some cases), and you have a recipe for such problems.
"Medical Errors" is something of a catchall term, and can span things from horrendous malpractice to a simple pharmacy mistake. Medication errors alone account for up to 10% of all errors, either because the pharmacist didn't give the right medication, right dosage, or because the patient just assumed whatever they were given was the right thing. The system itself has many safeguards top to bottom, but like anything else it's reliant on people to make it work.
It's also a dirty little secret of the medical industry, but many of these deaths are due to laziness and incompetence on the part of nurses and doctors, who's patients die largely because they never question what's done to them, and just assume they don't or wouldn't make mistakes. There's plenty of doctors who are prima donnas, and won't take counsel from people who know better in certain areas because they have a Messiah Complex or are just egotistical; and there's plenty of nurses that only bother to know enough to keep their jobs and not an atom more, knowing that their unions make them invincible.
Good nurses are fast disappearing from the industry, because too many of the young ones are horrible cunts who exemplify all the bad traits we talk about on this sub. Nursing has become the new waitressing; the job that basically any women with 2 brain cells to rub together can get to make it through life on her own, since single motherhood's now become the default state. A lot of them are looking to bag one of their patients as husbands with the whole Nightingale routine, so that they can go on part-time or maybe leave work altogether. Once that happens, you might as well just chuck that worker up as AWOL, because they've mentally checked out of the job. You'll find them grafted to their phones, gossiping with their harder-working peers, and generally doing everything in their power to drag the overall productivity of the department down into the toilet. As I work in the lab, I often have to deal with nurses, and while most of them (especially the older ones) are perfectly workable people, EVERY time there's an issue, it can be traced back to one of these newer people, who are sadly an increasing percentage of the workforce.
I know I've been harping on nurses, but it's for a singular point: it's the nurses that do the bulk of the actual medical work in a hospital, when most medical choices are made. While doctors handle the big things and give the orders, it's the nurses that are there carrying them out for the vast majority of the time. If a medical error is going to be made, it's these people that are the primary ones to make them. As the population of the first world gets older and more infirm, and as these less competent nurses become more numerous, this issue is GOING to come to the fore. The sooner we stop putting these women on pedestals, the better.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I agree with what you're saying - I know a few female nurses and they're a) fucked in the head (above and beyond the norm due to the disgusting shit they've done and deal with on a daily basis) b) quite stupid c) not overly interested in doing a good job
They're not people I'd be excited to find tending to my needs if I do myself a bit of mischief.
Even so, to have 115k deaths in a year attributed to medical errors is huge. Compare it to drunk driving (15k), drugs (11k) and guns (5k) and the nil tolerance policy on those areas... I can't say I've ever seen an ad campaign on the dangers of going to hospital for treatment. Shit, add the 45k under "hospital associated infection" to the total and the medical profession rockets up to 4th in the killer list nudging out tobacco. That is just completely astounding to me...
[–]LabTech410 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, you can understand why those sorts of figures wouldn't be widely distributed; public confidence in paying for healthcare is shaky enough, if the public realized that the actual healthcare itself is fraught with peril and hinges on a small number of people who most of the time are half-assing it, you'd have a panic on your hands. There's a lot of information on healthcare that is suspiciously difficult to obtain, shall we say.
I mean, to be honest, a lot of these deaths are with people that are in poor health anyway, and it's simply the case of a medical error making a bad situation worse. Like I said, 10% of that is just pharmacy errors where someone got given the wrong thing; that's why a lot of the work in a pharmacy is making damn sure a patient gets what they've been prescribed as they've been prescribed it, and of course this assumes that the doctor prescribed the right and proper thing.
The nurses though, the nurses are the worst part, and that sickens me because my mother was a nurse for decades. Her generation, sadly, is on the way out, and it's THEIR reputations that the current generation of nurses are abusing to get their fuck-ups forgiven and swept under the rug. The public thinks they're saints, and their unions are VERY powerful in the medical field; the first lab I worked at, the lab people didn't even have their own union, if you wanted that protection, you had to pay dues to the NURSE'S union. The place had shit conditions all over, the nurses in the ER had an almost pathological fixation on not sending us samples correctly, and the only time they ever flexed their muscles and agitated for something was when their pensions were threatened by a new hospital President.
Honestly, what needs to happen in this country is for the mystique around nursing to go away, so that these women can be treated as they deserve to be treated, with contempt. I can't tell you how many times I had conversations with nurses about something or other that needed doing, and the open contempt of doing the basic requirements of their jobs just oozed out of their voice.

All those other medical problems are caused by processed foods, like heart disease, cancer, obesity etc. Eating processed foods and meat and shit like Oreos and stuff like that is what causes problems, yet the FDA and the government doesn't ban or moniter them. But watch them come up with a million reasons why a plant like marijuana is bad for you.
I don't smoke or drink but if I was given the choice to eat some processed shit or smoke some weed, I'd rather just smoke me some #420.
[–]soloxplorer2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Eating processed foods and meat and shit like Oreos and stuff like that is what causes problems, yet the FDA and the government doesn't ban or moniter them.
As they shouldn't. It's not up to the government to tell people how much of a macro nutrient (in this case, carbohydrates) to take in. I'm not discounting the evidence that a carb-rich diet has a tendency to lead towards a sedentary lifestyle and the associated health problems, this is something that should be left up to the people to decide. Same goes with drug policy IMO, which is slowly being reformed with state cannabis legislation and legalization.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
More Americans die from food that the fda approves per year than marijuana. The government doesn't have the right to tell you what to eat and how much but then why ban marijuana, my choice? I also don't do drugs but the I see the huge hypocrisy!
[–]soloxplorer2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh I agree on the hypocrisy. In fact, they're actually starting to be a bit more hypocritical in my area (seattle) since they've legalized cannabis, but are now taxing sugar as a means of telling people what they shouldn't put in their bodies. Either we let people decide for themselves across the board, or we just let the government take over. I don't think I have to dive into why the latter isn't a good idea..
[–]AspieCelSkinCel1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Eh, depends on the carbs. Simple carbs from crap like sugar and white bread suck, but good complex carbs like whole grains, fruits, legumes and vegetables high in fiber haven't killed anyone.
[–]GenericRanger2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Weed has tar, don't smoke it, vape it. Better than Tobacco, but probably worse than Oreos. Though depends on what amount of weed vs what amount of oreas. You can eat a pound of oreos pretty easily, can you smoke a pound of weed in that same time frame probably not.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That's a good thing I don't drink or smoke, or eat processed shit, health all around.
[–]GenericRanger2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Most things are processed, and at times it's healthier that way, namely milk. The real question is how processed. Was it simply just cleaned with water, maybe steam. Or was it mechanically processed and infused with hydrogenated oils. Maybe dipped and pickled in high fructose.
No doubt, I never go with the mindset of buying organic and thinking that it is actually organic. I try to buy organic yes but I always make sure to read labels when buying coconut milk or any other processed plant product, I make sure there are no additives or artificial flavors etc.
[–]GenericRanger1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When it comes to coconut I always prefer the fruit/nut rather than anything that comes from a can or bottle. You normally can find coconuts at places like the 99c store, or many asian markets.
Chances are if you're buying organic paying 50 cents to a dollar per coconut core is within your budget. Also you could ship it to your house, even find a local farmer's market.

I really don't get why so many MGTOW members are anti-abortion. The kids that are being aborted are Chad's and Tyrone's babies that will be raised by single mothers via taxpayers if they can't trick some Beta Bux simp into paying for them. If the kids aren't aborted they'll just end up on welfare and become career criminals. Why should my tax dollars go to raising and feeding some Alpha spawn who's just going to grow up to rob me? I call that being cucked by taxes without representation. Abort that fucker.
[–]herpderpfeynman11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's more pointing out the cognitive dissonance commonly displayed by the left.
[–]LetsGoAllTheWhey2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Agreed, I'm ambivalent on abortion. But how can they rationally argue that the fetus isn't alive when it has a heart beat?
[–]poloppoyop3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The heart is just a muscle.
What's important is how much the brain has developped. Before 3 months: not really a lot.

So it’s alive, I will still abort it..
[–]closer_to_the_lung6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Because they're tradcon, and typically, their religious beliefs conflict with their political ones. They're a bunch of hypocrites.
"I don't want to have to pay for dead weight. Get a job and pay for yourself, the world doesn't owe you anything!"
And in the same breath:
"All life is precious, even zygotes. You're a murderer if you abort."
As you've pointed out, that zygote is going to grow up a freeloader, like his mother and father before them. You don't want to pay for the useless parents, or the useless kid, but you think that the useless kid's life must be spared? Get a grip on reality. You sound like the guy that won't put the drink down, but continues to complain about his daily hangovers.
The truth is, tradcons and incels have flooded reddit's MGTOW "group", but they certainly do not belong here... and it's painfully obvious to anyone who actually does belong here.
[–]DangZagnut6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
The fun part, is that decades ago Republicans were pro-abortion, because it decreased the inevitable welfare expense because useless children to single mothers just cost the government more.
Smaller government was more important that "murdered babies".
But then Republicans and conservatives were taken over by the theocratic desires of big name Jeebus worshippers, and they went full theocratic and to keep the revenue flowing in, so then they switched to make abortion a Jeebus issue.
Unfortunately, backing the Jeebus horse is a bad plan, as religious power is plummeting. Church volumes are in a free fall, so Republicans are going to have to change their stupid theocratic beliefs or end up just becoming a fringe group.
[–]desertfox163 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Freakonomics made a good point of this, would definitely check out the book, even backs up the point that most of these aborted babies are tyrones kids.

There is a very simple way to determine whether ir not something is a social construct. Let's take two examples: difference between men and women and "god given" rights. Leave a group of men and women (separated, no training) in a jungle and tell them to survive for a couple of weeks. This will test the former. As for the latter, take one guy from the group and bring him to a bear's territory and give him a copy of the bill of rights. Observe whether or not he will be alive when the bear comes back. Simple
[–]DWShimoda0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Problem with that (other than the inanity of introducing the "bear"*) is that it implies that "social construct" is a black & white, either-or, all or nothing kind of thing.
Reality isn't like that.
Gender for example is a biological FACT. Gender "roles" are partially a "social construct" that builds upon the biological fact.
That "gender roles" ARE partially social constructs and have SOME aspects that are "fungible" or overlapping, and subjective...
But that ALSO does not mean that gender roles are simply "arbitrary" constructs -- much less that ALL aspects of "roles" can be flipped on a whim -- nor that they are merely a matter of "choice."
They are far more complex than that. (And frankly, by pushing the "Simple" meme, you're demonstrating a fairly DEEP indoctrination into the -- entirely DIShonest -- feminist / cultural-marxist / SJW worldview.)
* For future reference I would suggest that you instead alter it to be at least a "human" of some kind -- say a "Yanomamo" tribesman -- or if you want to be less specific, just some "hunter gatherer" -- or even non-English speaker (might even pick some dead historical figure, say Genghis Khan, or George III, Josef Stalin, etc -- ala Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court").

Obesity never causes death, it enhances the chances to die from brain failure or heart failure. And about 2-3 times a year probably lung failure. With some chance to cause kidney and liver failure. Though that'd probably be more linked to old age, and alcohol.
