Is it more worth my while learning a trade? For example plumbing or carpentry rather than something like psychology?

Think about it logically:

People are becoming more and more dependent on professional services for non-tech related stuff
The older generation of blue-collar Plumbers / HVAC technicians / Electricians are retiring
The retiring generations kids aren't trying to take over their parents businesses. My theory here is it's similar to the fighters kids (I do this to provide for family so that my kids never have to get their hands dirty)
As advanced as new tech is, all of these appliances will becoming obsolete or break down eventually. We will always need people to service them.

There's a massive shortage of skilled technicians in the trades right now (these jobs are perceived to be not sexy). It's only going to get worse moving forward.

Additionally, as another poster mentioned, you can always start your own business. Set your own hours. With Psychology, I fear that you will always lose out to the plethora of women that try to take up that field. You'll be passed over for grad school, you're logic will be challenged, you'll have a tough time getting clients.

Psychology? There's a reason why pretty much all of the people who major in that are women, it's a fake degree full of mentally ill people trying to find answers to their own problems, and they're the one's that women mostly love to go to since only women (and soy boys) are stupid enough to take advice from other mentally ill people as legit. If you want to major in psychology, my advice is for you to go and apply to McDonald's right now, I just saved you $100,000 in tuition and fees to end up in the same end destination, you're welcome.

If you’re good in maths do electrical or love hard work, digging, can show ass crack and have a strong stomach do plumbing, electricians and plumbers easily make 100k a year here in aus, both maintenance and commercial, trade will never die, my mate is a chippy (carpenter) he is on 3k a week and just started finished off his apprenticeship and started with a company, id suggest do a trade, make tons of money and you’ll be able to pay off your uni fees easy

Get a REAL degree in STEM instead of wasting time/money/life on worthless degrees which do not help you OR society!

Psychology will probably earn more in declared pay. But the other 2 you will able to work undeclared. And a good plumber has always work.

Edit: forgot to add with trades you will be able to start your own company and be your own boss. As the company grows you can even hire other trades to have an all-round work contracts.

Too be honest like a decade ago everyone I know was talking about nursing degrees were a big payout. Then everyone got one and now the markets flooded w/ low wage nurses.

I suspect the same will happen with the trades.

I have been in computer science for 24 years 30 if you count paid work i did before i graduated.

Its soo much less of a sure thing than it was before. What im seeing lately is new kids coming in as cheap contractors after doing some poorly paid or free internships. And having to live with their family even after graduating with a comp sci degree. And in debt up to their eye balls. And thats in a highly sought after discipline.

Get that training and start making money now stay out of debt invest wisely. I can almost guarantee that you will be in better financial and mental position 10 years from now than as a physc major.

Supply and demand bro, it all depends on where you live or where you're planning to move. Do a really through research before making a decision as this most likely will impact you for life.

I don't recall the statistical value, but there is a very high chance of you making a career on whatever was your first job (not counting part times).

If you are young, get out and physically do something, move into offices once your over 40.

Here is something you can do to help you decide. Go to the bueru of labor statistics, look up psychology in the place you want to live and look up the trades you are considering. Which one earns more? Which one is expected to grow? Which one has a deficit of employees? I'm going into welding myself at 31 yrs old.

When society takes the proverbial crap. You will have a trade. That will keep you fed. I imagine that field along with lawyers will be the ditch diggers.

I'm all in favor of psychology, but you need to do more work. Master's minimum, and you have to know what the job market looks like in your area or the area you're moving to. It's one of those fields that gets crowded without having a lot of people.

Plumbing on the other hand is always in demand. More labor, but you'll always be able to find a job. Just be prepared to age a bit faster depending on how close to a city you are (the plumbing in older areas is terrible).
