Please stop encouraging these dunderheads to code, do you realize how tedious code reviews get when you're reviewing an inept chair filler? When they inevitably break the build by pushing garbage code to master, it's people like me that have to clean it up, and then on top of that i'll probably get in trouble for not "volunteering to mentor" these walking lawsuits.

NYT just ran an article on CS education. The gist of it was this:

Universities have been blindsided by the demand for CS degrees, leading to severe instructor shortages, waitlists/lotteries, and overcrowding. TRUE
Male students are more likely to have learned key CS concepts and coding languages on their own before attending college. TRUE
This represents a barrier to gender equality and a glass ceiling for girls in STEM. wtf
The article indirectly suggested that women (esp. those of color) be given preferential "affirmative action -style" positions on these waitlists/lotteries in order to create equality.

Now don't get me wrong. I think CS is a great career for women, maybe even more so then for men. I think math and programming are very much suited to the way women think, whereas engineering and science more suited to men, with PLENTY of overlap IMHO. But this is just retarded. Putting unqualified women with terrible attitude s in technical positions is organizational suicide.

The problem with coding is that good coding is expensive because good coders are expensive. Over the last few decades they have tried to dumb it down by introducing design philosophies that are moron friendly and languages that spoon feed you and wipe your ass and the result is lots and lots of really crap code.

The days when people like me were given the circuit diagrams to a Sperry autopilot and were told to go and write a full simulation, including fault modes, in assembler are gone. Yes I lived in the years when the programmer was significant. You went and understood the problem, designed a solution and then coded it and it worked.

Before I retired my main function seemed to be to do the stuff that couldn't be done by 'object oriented' programmers because it all got too complicated and they couldn't keep track. A real programmer likes 'too complicated' it makes the code interesting, especially when you need to speed it up by a factor of five.

Personally I don't think most people can be successful programmers. You have to have a pre-existing aptitude and love of computing. If you're not the sort of person who really enjoys setting up software, configuring your home network, etc. then you're probably wasting your time learning to code.

Of course this line is actually a sarcastic comeback at journalists like this who advised laid off blue collar workers to "learn to code".

Coding actually got me too stressed. Insane due dates, too much work, stakeholders always wanting to change insane stuff in the systems...Working as a sysadmin and now security specialist has got me more satisfied than programming. It's a thrilling job.
