You still have to have some piloting skills to be an astronaut. Military Astronaut Candidates with a jet piloting background maintain proficiency in NASA aircraft during their candidate period, and even non-pilot astronauts fly a minimum of four hours per month.

When the NASA astronaut corps were first created in 1959, women could not join because women were barred from Air Force training schools. the requirement to be an experienced military jet test pilot was a job available to men only. Nevertheless, in 1960, a “Mercury 13” group of women, all commercial pilots with 1000+ hours of flight, were selected to undergo the same physical tests as the male Mercury 7 group. These tests included swallowing a rubber tube to test stomach acids, testing their reflexes with electric shock, and shooting ice water into their ears to test their balance recovery. The first woman chosen for the program, Geraldyn Cobb, scored in the top 2% of all space candidates, including the men.
However, the program was shut down, and in the 1960s some program participants lobbied Congress for the inclusion of women in the space program, but their proposal was refused. It was not until 1972 that an amendment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1964 finally granted women legal assistance for entering the realm of space. By 1978, the jet fighter pilot requirement was no longer an obstacle for women candidates. NASA had its first class with women that year, but they were admitted into a new category of astronaut, the mission specialist.
To claim that men were astronauts first because of some inherent intelligence or savvy is flagrantly ignorant of the laws limiting women’s involvement in the United States. Women were in fact better candidates physically due to having on average reduced oxygen intake and lower weight to reduce drag upon takeoff. It’s not like it couldn’t be done — Valentina Tereshkova, the first female astronaut in space, proved women could function just as well in space in only 1963, less than a year after the House committee hearing on discrimination. As soon as it was legal for women to become astronauts in the US, they were.

The first US man in space, Alan Shepard, didn’t have specialized equipment, and he ended up peeing his pants during launch delays for the Mercury capsule. After this mishap, NASA built a device made of “a wearable containment belt, latex roll-on cuff, plastic tube, valve and clamp, and a plastic collection bag.” Peeing is hard in space. You’re not special because you have a dick.
