Sometimes they don't even do it to support their families. Notable examples are Newton and Tesla. Men have a drive to build and improve things that goes beyond caring for women.

But those men are quite exceptional. The vast majority of men do things with at the very least a secondary goal of impressing women and thus gaining the ability to raise a family. Women are born with everything but men are born with nothing. If men don't work to find a place in society, they'll find a place amongst the waste.
