Grew up without a father. Can relate. Was lucky that in my family a lot of people positively tried to play the part. None succeeded but they steered me away from being completely lost. I missed out and it’s not the same. Without a father I had to learn things on my own and and it set me back. Way back. Being raised by a resentful single mother makes you lesser than what you can be

Although she is 100% right in her statement, the damage has already been done and men are looking at the collective actions of women, not their words.

I was technically raised by a single mother, but I convinced her to take me out of public schooling and let me be home schooled. I had a tutor for an hour a week, and even that was unnecessary. I avoided the indoctrination pitfall that many kids succumb to, with a father or not. Beyond that, my mom is no NAWALT, however she did work extremely hard to keep a roof over my head and hers. I mostly spent my early teens playing Runescape, I raised myself in that virtual land.

My teens were definitely abnormal, but I turned out okay overall. I'm very lucky.

Toxic masculinity is when you don't get validated as a man because you do something which is nit considered as masculine by society or an individual, which in this case would be your father. It can really mess you up and you grow up to be insecure and fragile about your masculinity, the point of it is to make you feel less of man.

I’m not totally sold on this reasoning. I grew up without my dad, and yes, I have some issues, but I attribute them to a deeply unstable childhood centered around my parents’ conflict. If I had to guess, I think many who grow up without a dad and also have emotional issues are likely that way because of the circumstances that brought about their parents’ separation.

With regards to masculinity, I’m not sure what that means, in concrete terms. Could someone give me a working definition? I should also say that I’m only passing through/browsing as I wanted to understand what this community is about - this post caught my eye and I decided to comment.

You should see how the lack of good fathers messes up the girls, too. All the attention whoring, the constant need for validation, the lack of self worth, the barrage of poor life choices made on pure emotion alone... it's an entire generation of idiots who think they're strong and independent, but in reality are hot messes well into their 30's.

Most of the animal kingdom practice single motherhood, especially small life forms like insects with strict social structure where the disposability of the male is really apparent with mating cannibalism, bee social structure, etc . So masculinity and fatherhood are the keys to attain higher understanding and sovereignty. I didn't see my dad a lot growing up or have a very close relationship. His mind was usually somewhere else when he was home, always stressed. But damn am I grateful for what little he was able to teach me about masculinity.

I'm ashamed I ever hated him for not measuring up to what I thought he should have been. Now I'm very proud of him that he tried his best in a culture that didn't appreciate him for the bedrock of society that a responsible working dad is.
