One of the major things I struggled with was my childhood social experience. Before you start telling me to leave the past in the past because it's not helpful. Just read this and realize it's not a victim puke, it's just taking my history and putting it in proper perspective and tell newbies how "niceness" isn't the only response.
To summarize my experience: I was a soft kid. I was a big gentle giant. It started with light teasing which I didn't deal with correctly. I entered everyone's frame who engaged me. I was an only child with extremely pacifist parents. Had no siblings to help desensitize me to verbal sparring that boys engage in. Teasing got meaner and I still handled it poorly. Then at some point I experienced getting jumped until my mom documented everything and sued the county. I got sent to private school.
At the new school I got indoctrinated with the progressive mindset. I grew up in a SJW echo chamber at school. I no longer got picked on because I stayed in the house at home playing video games. And at school I faced no verbal sparring or difficult conversations because "negativity" was immediately punished. I accepted the feminist narrative because my mom seemed to be my only advocate and that was her mindset. She basically praised me for being a victim daily.
First off, I don't hold anything against any of the people in my past. I don't harbor resentment towards mom because she was practically a single mom with no strong masculine presence to reign in her ideals on what her son should be and how he deals with young male social dynamics. She had no captain, and I had no male mentor. Also, I'm not mad at my dad for skipping out on me, because I know the whole story now and I would have honestly done the same thing in his situation. But I also know that I'm more successful thanks to him leaving, and I wouldn't want him to "normalize" being a complete underachieving unambitious drunk to me.
I was told, "it's not your fault. Kids are just cruel." in relation to childhood bullies. In reality it was completely my fault, because I was not prepared for the social dynamics of how boys are supposed to relate. If I was a champion kickboxer and went to a BJJ gym full of blackbelts and got dominated I'd have to work my way up from white belt. Most of these boys in my school already had social groups and were prepared for the verbal sparring that boys take part in. Nowadays when someone makes fun of me I see it as an opportunity to make a new friend. It's better to be engaged than ignored. These kids didn't know me, so they tested my frame and after breaking it over and over they didn't see the value in me. And I became the neighborhood victim.
All of this was my fault. When I was able to accept that, I was able to let it go. And I also learned that it's good to have a male social group, as iron sharpens iron. If I continued to play the victim I never would've gotten to be as personally successful as I am now. I would have blamed my failure on my mom, dad, and a couple dozen young boys. And I'd likely teach my sons to be naive and weak too. The only one responsible for my failure and success is myself. And I can never expect anyone to be as invested in that as much as I am.
That applies to my childhood, teenage years and adulthood. My problems are no one else's problem but my own.
EDIT: Additional information.
You cannot hold on to your past and see yourself as a victim and fully embrace the fundamentals of MRP. It's important instead of forcing it into some dark corner of your brain that you bring it out into the light and dispel the lies you believe about yourself. Look at the entire picture as an adult. Dr. Glover talks in NMMNG about how when you're a child you believe the world revolves around you thus you believe you cause everything. And what I'm saying may seem to be counter to that. I'm not prescribing that people heap toxic shame upon themselves because of bad childhood choices. I'm advising you to revisit how you look at your past with your new eyes as you are unplugging or already unplugged. You're an adult now and once you learn some basic RP truths you're going to be able to easily put things in their place.
Here's some signs that you might need to revisit certain things.
If there's a person that you haven't seen in years and you are scared to see them. You might need to look at that with your new sense of perspective. You can lift, buy new clothes, get an awesome career, but if you see your high school bully and your cross the street to avoid him then you're just pretending. You need to destroy shame and fear wherever you find it. Even in your past. You can't change what's already happened but you can reorder the way you think about it.
When I was unplugging I blamed a lot of my shortcomings on my past. I told myself I can't do it because my mom let me believe this or that. It blocked me from getting what it means to own myself and my own thoughts, opinions, and actions. When I found my strength I was able to face old fears and put to death the lies I believed about myself. And as a result I realized that I CHOSE to believe those lies about myself. And when I stopped choosing that lie through critical thinking and ego suppression, I gained more strength and momentum.
If you're just unplugging now, I just want you to know that you'll be able to revisit the things from your past once you put in some work and put all that shame and bullshit to death.
If you're already unplugged but that stuff is nagging at you or holding you back, drag it out of the dark corner and out into the light. And deal with it.
If you're an RP Vet. This is just common sense.
