I was on a debate team a while ago and something they taught us was perspective shifting. Basically you look at the issue from the perspective of those you usually try and argue against and think of some convincing arguments.

As a longtime-reader of /r/MRA I get that we can sometimes get pretty serious and maybe even develop a little tunnel vision.
