Wow! “A gender lens” - I guess that’s the new term for sexism.

I'm no expert, but If I had to guess I'd say that driving ability has more to do with experience than age, meaning that a 17 year old with two years of driving experience might be a safer driver than a 21 year old with only six months of driving experience. Kicking the can a little further won't help as much as they think. (Source: I got my masters degree before my drivers license)

Being realistic, this isn't expected to pass. That's not the point. The point was to make yet another statement about how awful men are, especially young men.

I'm surprised I didn't read "Young men worse drivers, women affected worse". It is the Guardian after all.

Our brain's danger perception centre doesn't mature until our late 20s. That's one reason why we think we are invicible in our 20s. So to be prudent, we should stop all men and women from driving until they are 30.

Or, alternatively, teach young men to drive at the age of 12, on tracks away from the public, in bumper cars, so they have more experience by the time they get their licence at 18.

I suspect this is an intentional distraction by the government to take the spotlight away from other much worse legislation being tabled. Have a look for that.

So boys don’t have the same right to travel as girls. Boys can’t get jobs that they would have to drive to, only girls can, boys can’t go to education institutions that they have to drive to. How is that not a massive disadvantage and oppression

You have to look beyond the demographics to craft better laws. That’s just legislative laziness at best and outright discrimination at worst. Obviously some young men under the age of 21 are better drivers than others. Maybe they should roll up their sleeves and do the dirty work of finding out what behaviors lead to these fatalities, explore mitigating measures (i.e. better training) and, most importantly, avoid discriminating against a segment of the population based upon immutable traits. That’s the real goal of equitable treatment which is to look beyond race, creed, sex, religion, national origin and age and see the person’s character.

Makes sense.

Young men are most likely to have accidents because of purposefully reckless driving.

The female equivalent would be baby brain during pregnancy when women have the most absences and are most easily distracted in their life times. Most dont try to drive in that state but it would be pretty high risk.
