It's the same kind of hypocrisy that we see with the radical climate change lot who shout and scream at Western governments yet wouldn't dare go to China to try the same thing. Another example would be anti capitalism protestors with their iPhones , Nike shoes and designer clothes....all made in sweatshops in the far East by wage slaves.

Those that shout the loudest and display their own virtue are often the biggest hypocrites.

I don’t disagree entirely. I sent an email at work saying “thank you ladies” and got in trouble.

But keep in mind in saying this (ie comparing all our life issues to that of the entire world) nobody can complain about anything. It’s like saying I shouldn’t be upset my kid is being bullied at school because some 8 year kid somewhere is holding an AK.

I feel like this is such a weak argument. Women suffering in Afghanistan is absolutely horrible, I agree. That doesn't mean people can't advocate for change in their own country.

If one of my friends gets mugged and beat up and I only get mugged, does it mean that I shouldn't be able to be mad?

To be honest - and I might be in a slightly different news world here - out of the coverage on Afghanistan, it seems like we have an obsession with the plight of women and girls, especially when it comes to education.

It frustrates me a bit - not because I do not agree that it is atrocious not to let girls go to school beyond primary (it is), but because the narrative misses much more important issues. It is a dirt-poor country with rampant poverty and terrible schooling for the vast majority who cannot afford private education (which accepts girls and women). Tribal violence is rife. But we get the picture that, if you are an average man, living in Afghanistan is just spiffy.

In fact, what about class? The gripes we hear are those of women in the uppermost echelons of Afghan society. The Taliban will try to control them, but because of their success and fame, they are by far the people we should worry the least about in the current situation. They are the remnants of the liberal bubble Kabul used to be in the 70s, the hippie era.

Then again, the argument that gripes do not matter because there are many worse ones is not a fruitful one. Even in Afghanistan, the scale of human suffering blanches in comparison with what most of humanity had to endure just a few centuries ago. That is of course not an argument to shrug it off.

fyi, there are more males killed, raped, and kidnapped by the taliban than females.
