My country (Australia) shows de facto relationships of over 2 years as the same as marriage on a case by case basis. If you live with an SO but are unmarried, and it goes sour, you're in the same boat as the married couple.
What's more, you haven't had the opportunity to have a prenup, even though they are often disregarded it has to be better than nothing.

While I agree that men going through divorce proceedings, especially when there are children involved, are often totally fucked over (and that goes double in my country of Canada), taking up this viewpoint is like what some radical feminists say, to avoid men (in this case marriage to women) all together because they are eventually going to rape or beat you (or in this case take all of your money and children in divorce court).
That being said, every time I read about some guy who has to pay alimony and child support totaling more than the cost of a car per month with supervised visitation to his children every other weekend, etc, I am just a tiny bit happier about having been born gay.

Any man who gets married in this day and age: Can I interest you in a partnership where we don't put in equal amounts of work, I can leave and take 1/2 the assets while you continue to pay me a profit dividend?
[–]Canadian4Paul7 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Ok, I guess I'll be the guy who calls bullshit.
Marriage isn't for everyone.
Yes there is a negative stigma surrounding men who refuse to get married or "commit" and that needs to change, but that aside, many men enjoy very fulfilling marriages. To many of us (myself included), the idea of being permanently and romantically attached through marriage is very self-fulfilling and enriching.
Yes, bad things can happen, and yes, the courts will be stacked against you. There is no doubting that some unsuspecting men have been screwed out of their lives because of their marriages. This does NOT mean that all marriages are bad. This is exactly the same as when feminists say that all women should avoid men because of the threat of being raped or assaulted.

The only benefit for men regarding marriage is for their children. Their possible children will have a better lifetime outcome if the parents manage to stay married.
There is little health, or almost no benefits for the well-being of the man when he gets married.
I plan on getting married as well, but know that it is playing Russian roulette with three chambers loaded. If our relationship fails I will be financially responsible for her for the rest of her life. I will have no rights in the enforcement of visitation of our children.
50% of marriages end in divorce, people are not willing to work together to resolve issues, and till death do us part does not mean anything anymore, because the government allows them to maintain the benefits of marriage without requiring to be married.

The least you can do is prenup. I am getting married on March 2nd and I completed my prenup on January 31st. It protects my house, 401k, car, dog and me from paying her alimony. It cost me $2,500 to complete and it is well worth it. The only thing you can't prenup for is Child Support. It's not a 100% guarantee but it is infinitely better than doing nothing.
My fiance's argument is that I don't trust her. I responded that I don't trust anyone when they are angry. My parents are divorced and my mom took my dad to the cleaners. I would be stupid to make the same mistake. I simply will not even entertain the idea of marriage without a prenup.

I responded that I don't trust anyone when they are angry.
I recommend that before marriage a couple should see each other at their worst. When they're angry, hurt, sick, sad, depressed, petulant, feeling righteous, stubborn, etc.
Some people handle those things better than others. If you don't trust someone when s/he is at her/his worst then you might not be quite ready for marriage.

We've been together for 10 years and living together for over 1 year. Why so long you might ask? Well I have a phobia of marriage and the overwhelming government backing of women.
[–]AnAdultWoman2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I wasn't trying to disparage non-marriage as an option. If in doubt, I'd say don't do it - that goes for marriage and children. As long as you're both happy with the situation, I think it counts as a success. The problem would be is if she wanted marriage.. as long as she knows it's not coming with you then she can make her own choices just like you can.
Out of curiosity: If her life long goal was to be Mrs. Somebody how would that affect your views towards continuing the relationship?
Her lifelong dream was to become a single Business Entrepreneur traveling the world and making tons of money. She is very independent, caring and extremely smart (smarter than I). But slowly over the years she has become more family oriented and wanted to make a life together. She is the type of person that will keep on working and help me if I am down and out. She told me that if we ever get divorced she would never ask for child support as long as I take care of the kids (which is without a questions). She even confided in me if things don't work out between us later that she would want us to stay together living in the same house for the sake of the kids, even if I date other people (I won't).
And, I'd wager after 11 years you know her character very well. You'd have seen her in her good and bad. But, if you have a phobia, you have a phobia.
[–]PerniciousOne2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You need to have her hire a lawyer and have the lawyer do due-diligence on your pre-nuptual agreement.
Pre-nuptual agreements are being thrown out because of "signing under duress" and "not understanding". She needs a lawyer to explain to her exactly what the pre-nup entails.
Many are also thrown out when children become involved. You can protect yourself, and you have taken steps.
Good luck with your upcoming marriage.
[–]keyboardjock2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Thank you for your sound advice. I got her an attorney who charged me a flat fee of $1000 dollars to take my fiance as a client. My attorney charged me roughly around $1500 to draft the prenup.

The only benefit for men regarding marriage is for their children.
Again, speak for yourself. Perhaps many men will agree with you, but some of us do get significant emotional benefits from marriage. This isn't an absolute, open and shut case.
[–]keyboardjock5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Why do you have to get married and not just be together forever. Why bring the government or church into a union?
[–]Canadian4Paul1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Personal preference and sentimental value.
[–]AnAdultWoman1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There are also a lot of legal benefits to marriage: being next of kin, inheritance, benefits if only one partner works (or in this economy has lost a job). The issue of gay marriage is because these benefits automatically come with legal marriage.
I believe this is the only reason for marriage.
[–]PerniciousOne3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Many people today do not support traditional vows such as "till death do us part", it is now "till I grow tired of you and divorce you"
Regardless of how "you" feel, over 80% of divorces are filed by women.
Almost half of marriages today end in divorce
http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/cats/births_deaths_marriages_divorces/marriages_and_divorces.html
If you do get divorced you "lose access to significant emotional benefits", and being male the primary person you emotionally invest in is no longer available. Why the suicide rates of separated and divorced men is much higher.
Marriage today is a very hard legal agreement to enter in today. You need to really sit down and think because it is a binding legal agreement that only forces the rules upon you.
Yet only 50% of marriages end in divorce. That number is staggaringly high, but keep in mind many people get divorced 2, 3, or even 4+ times. My mother has just been asked to be her friend's maid of honour for the fourth time.
What I'm saying is that it's more likely the marriage will last forever than not, so why try to convince those people it's not worth it?
[–]loose-dendrite1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This is my tact. I'd get married if by objective standards I can predict the outcome. I know that by default I am so incompetent that I cannot judge my own incompetence but eventually I learn.
[–]CaptSnap7 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This does NOT mean that all marriages are bad.
Just because everyone that swims in the shark tank doesnt get eaten by a shark doesnt mean its still a good idea. Sure youre right if you dont get eaten alive then yeah there are alot of benefits to swimming. But there are LOTS of places and ways to swim that dont involve getting in the ocean like a fucking moron.
[–]Canadian4Paul-4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The title doesn't say "be careful where you swim", it says "don't ever swim".
Absolutes like that are just plain unprogressive.
[–]CaptSnap9 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The article is saying dont get married (a legal arrangement) its not saying dont love/date/enjoy women.
If you can derive the benefits from swimming (enjoying satisfying relationships) without swimming in a shark tank (marriage) then you are prudent; think of it as risk aversion.
Thats a really important distinction. Men (and women) should be aware of what marriage is, the additional risks it imposes, and what few additional rewards it bestows so they can make an informed decision if thats really the legal framework their relationship requires.
What seems so odd, though, is that proponents for gay marriage are so obsessed with the benefits of marriage. If it is really of such little value, it makes me wonder why so many people are so impassioned about it.
[–]Canadian4Paul-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I guess marriage is just that, it's an added sentimental title. It's a way of showing your complete devotion and trust towards another person. People can hold it to whatever sentiment they like, but all I am trying to say is some will place a higher value on it than others, and I strongly suggest those people seek what will make them happy, regardless of the risks that go along with it.

fuck being progressive

So glad I read this comment, as someone who has been in a relationship for almost 3 years and plans on getting married once we're financially stable (still in college, got a few years.) this article made me cringe.
Your comment is a small thing but it was encouraging to hear "Yes bad things can happen but it doesn't have to be that way."
[–]indpndnt0 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I am also really looking forward to marriage. Seeing what my folks and my brother have in theirs is really encouraging.
That, and I really want to be able to pass on all the things I've learned about being a man to a son or two.
[–]Canadian4Paul-2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm in exactly the same situation.
Girlfriend and I have been together over 2 years, see each other every day and spend every night together. I graduate in April, and she'll follow suit not too long after. We've already talked about moving in together and marriage. She's a sweetheart and I trust her fully.

I support MRA , but I found this article only ranting. Like how feminists argue. It provided not statistics, citations, or sources.
Merely someone giving opinion after opinion.
I prefer opinion back up with facts.

FTA: Society typically paints a negative stereotype of men who hesitate, delay, or elect not to marry.
They are labeled as either:
A) Womanisers who are unable to participate in a long term relationship, or B) Selfish, childish or irresponsible men who can not take care of themselves or another person.
I consider myself to be a womaniser without a woman, unable to participate in a long term relationship do to said lack of woman, selfish, childless, a responsible man who has no choice but to take care of myself and has no other person to take care of.

Great blog. It does a fantastic job of enumerating the risks and liabilities men face with modern marriage.
I keep having to stop people and ask "in what ways does modern marriage benefit men?" I usually get a blank look on their face in response. Yes there's some legal benefits, as the LBGT community will tell you, but that's not what I'm talking about.
[–]FAPSLOCK0 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This is where I stopped.
A significant number of 20-something and 30-something women spend all of their disposable income on luxury rental apartments, upscale restaurants, frequent exotic vacations, leased cars, spa treatments, and excessive amounts of clothing, purses, shoes and accessories.
Oh good. Women buy shoes and lease cars. Thanks for that. And I was worried this article would be something that made us all look like childish morons.
EDIT: I can't stay away
Anyone who says, “Slavery is dead” clearly has not contemplated the predicament of the average Western Husband,
Comparing marriage to slavery. LITERAL SLAVERY. C'mon! This essay has to be a plant to make us look like sexists and racists.
[–]phedre-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You know what, I'll never marry. It's not for me, I have zero interests in having kids or a spouse. But when you throw in shit like this:
If a man insists that his wife honor the conjugal requirements of the marriage contract, he can and will be accused of sexual abuse, sexual assault or rape.
anything you say loses all credibility. "insists that his wife honor the conjugal requirements of the marriage contract"? Are you fucking SERIOUS? If you force someone to have sex, it's rape and you should be brought up on charges for it. Male, female, whatever your gender is, you are not entitled to sex from ANYONE, I don't care what your relationship to them is.
Is sex an important part of a relationship? Of course it is and no one can deny that, but that kind of bullshit just isn't right.
[–]rebuildingMyself1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If you force someone to have sex, it's rape and you should be brought up on charges for it.
Agreed, but the French government thinks it's perfectly fine for a woman to sue her husband for not putting out enough. Be wary of the many double standards slowly being slipped into our society.

I'm a dude and frankly I find this entire article sexist against women. It begs the question from the first paragraph after the intro, painting women to be money mongering childish beings with debt, high expectations, with little responsibility for their finances or well-being...and they need YOU to save them!
Let me start off by saying: I am not by any means implying no women are like this. However, I do think it IS wrong to imply that this will be the norm in one's own marriage and that it is the standard we should expect. We have choices when deciding who we want to marry, and if you're in that intimate of a relationship one should know the content of their partner's character. This article paints to-be-married women as oppressors, keen to get their way and willing to pitch infantile tantrums to get it. If you're in a relationship with that sort of person, don't get married.
I'd like to also address /r/MensRights on the subject of becoming exactly what we disagree with about feminism. I see more and more that this subreddit strives less toward the truth, and more toward hate-mongering and at the end, misogyny. I see with each passing day the same tropes and generalizations, blanket statements, and logical fallacies that I hate so much from the radical feminists being used HERE, supported by our peers and made without irony. This has to stop. We cannot fall into the habit of using the same rhetorical devices used by the irrational and radical feminist movement. If MRAs want to be taken seriously then we need to start being the bigger man. It's not easy to stare in the twisted face of an emotional movement based on hate, propaganda, and a harmful agenda; if we start employing the same tactics that we find so abhorrent we become no better than they are, and in my eyes no more credible. If Men's Rights wants to truly differ from radical feminism, it has to truly strive for equality and truth for BOTH genders; playing a game of "Who's more oppressed" or saying "They started it!" is childish at best and ends up accomplishing nothing for either side.
I'd like to hear your opinions on this. If anyone would like me to expound on my issues with the article, I will, but I'd rather not muddy up the majority of this comment with quotes trying to prove a specific point.
tldr: Stare too long into the abyss and the abyss will gaze into you.
Edit: If you're going to downvote me do me the courtesy of telling me why, that's all I ask.
[–]AnAdultWoman-5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think that if, deep down, you can't commit to a woman because you're scared for your future financial and emotional well being - you absolutely should not get married!
It's more likely to become a self fulfilling prophecy since the first time she does something that trips the trigger all those doubts and fears will surface. That's likely to kill the marriage.
There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself
There is also something to be said about saving other people from your views of reality.
On the other hand, 50% of marriages do work! That means that somewhere, out there, are responsible, trustworthy, and mature people who are perfectly capable of building lasting, successful, and fulfilling partnerships.

I looked at the second line:
