For anyone who has been suicidal before, do you think it’s true that the reason men use firearms to kill themselves more often is because men are taught to be tough and strong or something like that?

Typically male suicides want to guarantee success. These attempts are not a cry for help or attention. As a result, males tend to use faster and more final, guaranteed methods than females.

A much higher percentage of female suicide attempts don't actually want to succeed. They are cries for help or attention. This is reflected in their choice of method, which is usually overdose or perpendicularly slashed wrists. Both of these methods have a high likelihood of successful medical treatment, if the patient is found relatively quickly.

I’ve heard that firearms are “quick” and “painless” to do, and probably so did many others. I’m a girl, and even I once thought about using a gun too.

I guess the first filter is to check how many men have/use firearms vs how many women do. If more women are more reluctant to have or use them, then it stands to reason fewer women will have the intent or even opportunity to use a firearm to commit suicide

Of course not. Suicidal men choose the most effective suicide methods because they want to die, and when you want to complete a task, anyone who isn't utterly incompetent would opt for the most effective means of completing said task. There's only two possible reasons why women don't successfully kill themselves as often as men, either they don't really want to die as much, or they are less competent. I'd generally say the former is more likely.

I know because I've been there, when you really want to die you do a 5 minute google search and look at the most fatal suicide methods statistically broken down by success rate, and if/when the time comes, I'll go for the most likely method to kill me. Because I'm not a complete moron and would only attempt suicide if I wanted to die.

The reason why men have a higher fatality rate is because they use more messy but final methods. Women don’t do this because they think about who might find the body and the mess things will make. Not searching for sympathy but being sympathetic themselves

Probably it doesn't go a whole lot further than differences in gun ownership by gender and that you can attempt suicide with a gun, decide not to pull the trigger that day, then put it back down and go to work like nothing happened for months.

100% think it's because they want to be absolutely sure it works and they're aiming for a release from their life. Hard for me to say though, I was suicidal for more of the attention seeking reasons until I realized that if I actually went through with anything ain't nobody going to stop me.

In a way the complete apathy of the people and the culture around me made me realize that my suicidal tendency (where execution would be less absolute or...uh...sure fire) were futile simply because if the aim is attention/notice well...That avenue is already blocked for me So my suicide attempt is sure to fail at getting me what I want.
So the only reasonable thing to kill myself over would be an absolute release from the burdens of my life, and my life was/is simply not so burdensome or horrible as to warrant me wanting an absolute escape.

I have a genuine question. Do you guys think women “try” suicide more because estrogen is a cautious hormone while testosterone causes more risk-taking so men hesitate less about the consequences of dying.

I’m a woman who has attempted five times and stopped before it was too late because I was scared of what happens after you die. I always feel bad about it afterwards.

A few times I have practiced (not an actual attempt because I did not intend to die) things like writing out suicide notes and preparing to stab myself but not doing it so that if I attempt again I can just go through with it without getting scared like I always do.

I think it’s also a role in why I chose methods that kill you slowly instead of instantly. I would not be surprised if other women did for the same reasons.
