In college I helped out at a self defense class for women. I am 6'7" tall, so a bigger fellah. One of the gals asked me, and so I showed up. She was cute. The instructor helped me pad up. I already wore a jock and cup I had from high school wrestling. So minimal other padding. And he made sure we were alone and told me to not go easy on them. Don't hospitalize them, but don't go easy. I was like...dude...you sure? And he was like yeah. So....

It was brutal. I did hold back a little from sheer human compassion. Most of their pressure points and holds did nothing. Or not enough to hinder me. Stomping the top of my foot worked, somewhat. After a while it got sore. But there were a few girls who really thought they were going to whip my ass. Had a few tears from them. They were flabbergasted at just how little they could do to me. And terrified of how easily I could toss them around. Some of them avoided me on campus afterwards. Seemed unfair at the time, but looking back...I kinda get it. The girl who invited me lost interest, so that kinda backfired on me.

So afterwards the Instructor took this as a teaching moment to explain to them that the point was to get away. Hit something soft hard enough to give them space to run to a public, well lit area. I was an object lesson.

But I never went back to do it again. My goal was to be attractive to women, not terrifying. But...yeah...ladies...if a big guy is coming at you with ill intent. Run. You ain't Black Widow or Wonder Woman. If you're going to use that key, stab it between some ribs, or at his eyes. Then run cause now he's pissed.

I've done this too though, and I know I'm definitely not the only one. Statistically, as a man, I am more likely to be a victim of homicide, and therefore, I must be more cautious. Carrying pepper spray or any self defense tool or weapon is illegal in my country, so I walk around with keys between my fingers when I'm about to pass any group of men. At times I'd even carry a bottle of lynx spray with me if I knew I was going through a dodgy place.

Why do they make these things into competitions? "Oh, you don't want to have your life ruined? Well Me this and that, and that's worse."

I offered a partial remedy to the problem, but nope "women shouldn't have to take self defence classes just to feel safe on the streets." Because that's one of the things taught in self defense classes- gouge at the face/eyes with keys. Also making a lot of noise, breaking a finger, biting or kicking in the crotch. And as soon as you have an opening, run like hell.

I know nearly any man could overpower me, and that makes me on the alert for any advantages in potentially risky situations. Using my fists definitely isn't one of them.
