I think that there are several statistical factors favoring men in custody, and it would be helpful to get hard statistical data:

one child only ("even a man can handle one child)
son ("boys need their fathers")
child 5+ or child 8+ ("if dad really screws up, the child can tell mom and we'll fix this quickly")
married for several years prior to custody decision ("although I might be legally obligated to not consider the child's current living conditions in making an initial custody determination, the child was living exclusively with his/her mother")
mom is employed full time ("they're both wage earners. either can pay the child support we need for Title IV-D funding without a burden")

It would be interesting to hear how many are true in this case.

In Canada, the law is sex-blind. Many women pay alimony to their husbands… :)
