Female here. No, tampons are not a basic right. Rights are things like “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” not something that comes from Proctor & Gamble. TP may be slightly closer to something everyone should have acccess to, but even that strains logic.

Fun fact: commercial forms of feminine hygiene weren’t available until circa WWI, when Kotex changed purpose from being a bandage company. Prior to that, women were able to do all sorts of things with DIY feminine hygiene.

[–]booszhius 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

CMIIW, but don't tampons present a higher risk of TSS if used improperly?

[–]KyokoG 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are correct. There was a lot of attention drawn to TSS in the 1980s when super-absorbancy tampons came onto the market, and little instruction was given about amount of time you should be able to keep one in. Now, the prevailing wisdom is to use the smallest size you need for your flow and be diligent about changing every 6-8 hours. It's also not a bad idea to change more frequently if you feel like you've been in some random situation that might introduce bacteria to the string, because the string can act as a bacteria ladder. Overall, though, today's tampons are pretty safe.

[–]HardLessontoLearn 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Higher risk than not using them? Sure. I'm not sure the argument you're trying to make. The risk of tss is still extremely low. I can provide more info if you help me understand what you're getting at.

[–]booszhius 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What I'm getting at is: why tampons specifically over pads or any other product?

[–]HardLessontoLearn 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gotcha. I'll admit I'd avoided clicking on the link to the HuffPo article in the OP because i didn't want to give it views. However, just checked and while "tampons" is in the title, the article centers on "menstrual hygiene products" in general. My guess is that "tampons" leads to more clicks than the other.

If you're asking about why women would personally choose tampons over other options, I suppose I'm happy to answer that as well.

[–]KyokoG 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Looking at the rest of the thread, you were also asking why tampons over pads or anything else. I must say I’ve not heard anyone articulate a convincing reason for tampons over pads or menstrual cups or anything else. My assumption is that most women opt for tampons because they find them less visible (obviously) and more comfortable (debatable). Also, I have a feeling that, since tampons are the feminine hygiene product that arguably allows you to most “forget” you are menstruating, it does the most to “restore equality” with men, and therefore is at the crux of this argument. Most of this debate seems to get conflated with the idea that anything that differentiates a woman’s life from a man’s must be eliminated in the name of fighting sexism.

You want to help me out at that time of the month? Forget not taxing my tampons; don’t tax Reeces cups. Give a sister a break here. :-)

[–]mikesteane 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would say food was a more basic right. And since men, on average, need more of it, this complaint is more than balanced by the fact that men need to pay for food with its associated taxes.

[–]HardLessontoLearn 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I like seeing feminist-crazed media really reaching for straws with this one, but I'm terribly afraid of most of society's definition of "right".

[–]fonduman 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's always funny watching SJWs campaign for a certain right by claiming the given thing is their right... if something is already your right, then why are you campaigning to make it a right? It's like their confused, malfunctioning thinking patterns leach into everything.

[–]somefinfishy 19 points20 points21 points 8 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

I don't disagree. Mens rights doesn't mean we can't agree with things that are right for women too. At the very least there should be no tax on these products. People on low incomes or state benefits shouldn't have to choose food over tampons. We don't get equality by sinking everyone to the bottom.

[–]-manatease 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men need on average 25% more calories than women. In the UK, you can buy 24 tampons for £0.75 at Lidls supermarket (inc 5% tax) so it's nowhere near as expensive as the extra calories men need to live on.

I agree that they shouldn't be taxed at all, but they are not a right - just as it's not a right for a man to get 25% extra free food.

[–]fonduman 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

If there's a tax on toilet paper, there should be a tax on tampons. They're both essential hygiene products, and arguably toilet paper is more important.

If we remove the tax on tampons but retain the tax on toilet paper, then we're not removing the tax on tampons due to them being an essential hygiene product, since the same logic doesn't apply to other essential hygiene products, but rather due to their link with the female gender. Giving benefits to one gender over another purely for the sake of gender is sexism. I disagree with sexism.

[–]Elvick 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

And I disagree. I feel like it's not. Just because this uniquely benefits women, doesn't mean we have to agree with it either.

Being comfortable is not a "basic right". That's massively overselling it. I also wouldn't say that toilet paper is a "basic right". It's a privilege, and current hygienic standard to utilize these things. And it's better to have than not, but "basic right"? No.

To me basic rights are more like access to drinkable water, freedom of [and from] religion, and things of that nature. Not tampons.

[–]somefinfishy 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Depriving women only increases the divide. Mens rights is about mens issues being respected not at the cost of womens issues but as well as. We will not get our voices heard by just saying women shouldn't get things because men don't need them. It's about realising that men and womens needs differ and we all need to be treated diffetently.

[–]Elvick 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

We will not get our voices heard by just saying women shouldn't get things because men don't need them.

That's a massive strawman if there ever was one. Where the hell did I say that I didn't think it was a BASIC RIGHT because men don't need it? Fucking nowhere. I brought up toilet paper for a reason. I gave examples of what I believe constitute "basic rights" for a reason.

Yet you still ignored it all to view women as victims. You confirmed my initial suspicions that I avoided putting in my original comment then. That you are coming from a position of fear of being accused of sexism. Rather than any legitimate position you can argue.

Note I never said you were wrong. I don't think this is a clear cut issue where there's one "right answer". Which is why I explained my position and tried to give some context of my position. Yet you still somehow read it as, "Well men don't need it, so it's not a basic right. lolwomen amirite".

I don't think this is a "basic right", so I'm "depriving women"? When I think the same of toilet paper? Something EVERYONE uses and is very much similar in "necessity"?

So I guess we should just sacrifice the issue on the alter to appease [feminist] women because... "well we don't want to be sexist do we?"

Yeah, fuck that. No thanks. Next time, just argue the actual point.

[–]somefinfishy -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Soon as you say strawman i know you're not worth dealing with. It may not be a basic right, but its an issue you and I won't ever have to deal with. Imagine every fourth week having to choose between food and sanitary towels. The argument wasn't about toilet paper it isn't the same issue. Your point is fuck the women and their need for sanitary products, mine is, we stand in a better position to argue for our causes by seeing what the women need too. If we all go fuck you, getting cheap womens products it creates a divide, by seeing that this issue is unique to women and helping them achieve it they may start to see that their are issues that affect men uniquely. It is not a race to the bottom. At the least I support a tax cut on these products, how does that hurt men?

[–]Elvick 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You literally made up an argument I didn't make to argue a point that is completely irrelevant. That's a strawman.

Disingenuous fool. And you continue doing it.

Your point is fuck the women and their need for sanitary products

Nope.

. If we all go fuck you

Didn't say that. No one has.

by seeing that this issue is unique to women and helping them achieve it they may start to see that their are issues that affect men uniquely.

See, you're literally saying we should support it SOLELY because it's uniquely affecting women. We should treat one gender exclusive hygiene product as a "basic right", solely to appeal to women. "SEE I'M NOT SEXIST". But not other hygiene products which to you are "irrelevant" and a "different issue" [they aren't].

how does that hurt men?

Never said it did. Imbecile.

[–]somefinfishy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No time for comment thread debate team champions, who resort to insults and pulling apart a comment. Sorry i didn't conform to your rules of debate, that I offer up an opinion referencing a different subject that wasn't stated in your retort to my comment, or rather sorry I just don't agree with you on this issue. Really no need to be a dick about things though. Go troll some other thread. The internet is full of dickheads go take a number and join the back of the queue

[–]AssAssIn46 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Read what you're saying. You start of with a fallacy again, lmao. No reply to his actual argument rather the fact that he called out you using a fallacy so he's unworthy of your time.

Again, I get the idea of "let them have this or show we're not against women's issues" however they're a massive level of dishonestly there.

If we don't agree that they are a right, we're letting them have it just to appease them which can be considered morally wrong (also don't want to comprise our beliefs) and it's wrong because all other hygiene products are not treated the same and people need those too.

On the other hand if we do agree, which I'm assuming you do, it comes back to the argument of whether or not it is a right which the person above already argued against so how about to reply to that to make your point?

[–]somefinfishy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

His argument was that they aren't a basic right, and something about toilet paper, all I said was it doesn't help our cause by being twats over womens rights issues, "a basic right" maybe not but is it something we would want if we bled every 4 weeks, of course. I really don't need debating lessons in a comment thread from two internet debate team champions thank you.

[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's not a debating lesson again as you put it trying to be the condescending prick that you are. We're just asking you to be consistent with your logic. If you think tampons should be free because women bleed every 4 weeks, then toiler paper should be free because people shit every day. That's why he bought up toilet paper. But you chose to ignore him and just repeat the "we shouldn't be twats about women's issues" without explaining how we're acting like twats just because we disagree on one particular topic.

[–]somefinfishy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When you resort to insults it shows you have nothing better to say. I didn't say free i said not taxed. Bringing up toilet paper has nothing to do with the issue. It just changes the focus of the discussion, i have no argument about toilet paper, its not gender specific and has no purpose being discussed here.

[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You've been resorting to insults too, just because you didn't explicitly swear doesn't mean it was an insult. You were being condescending instead of actually replying to the argument so I felt it was fair. Should I have been the bigger man and not use insults? Yeah probably, but at worst I did the equivalent to what you did.

Also, my mistake, you said taxed but the point still stands.

Bringing up toilet paper has a lot to do with the issue because it's arguably just as essential of a hygiene product if not more yet it's being left it when it comes to the discussion which isn't fair for the reasons I explained in my other reply to you.

[–]AssAssIn46 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree with what you're saying here but that doesn't mean I or anyone else has to agree with this particular issue. Hygiene products are a privilege, not a right.

No tax on hygiene products as a whole is a good idea so those less fortunate can at least have some comfort but they're definitely not a "right".

[–]somefinfishy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Do you bleed every month? Do you risk toxic shock syndrome by putting a foreign object inside your body? Do us men want to see period blood everywhere? By calling it a right it is simply a way of opening up the tax system to remove VAT, if its a hygeine product it can be taxed. Its as much a right as a jaffa cake isn't a biscuit, but by calling it a right they get the tax deduction. Which I'm all for so let it be called a right..

[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Great, we're arguing that if this does get tax deduction then so should other hygiene products because they're just as and in some cases more needed e.g. toilet paper or diapers.

[–]somefinfishy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is a debate about gender specific hygeine products, toilet paper being taxed punishes both sexes equally, tampons punish women only. My point is that this subreddit is about ensuring men specific issues are dealt with and the way to do this is by dealing with women specific issues fairly too.

[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hygiene products don't exactly need to be split into gender specific products. You can't argue that because white men are more likely to be convicted for the same crime as white women, their gender should remain anonymous during trials but leave out the same issue affecting black men; even if you're not against the same thing happening for cases where the accused is black.

Similarly, you can't argue that one particular hygiene product not be taxed while leaving out other essential hygiene products. Which is why the person you were originally replying to used the argument of other hygiene products not being free while tampons specifically are free is grossly unfair. Either they're all free/not taxed or none are.

[–]somefinfishy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get your point but i disagree with you both. I can't think of a product that is unique to men in the Hygeine category, we all use toilet paper, razors, shampoo, soap, deodorant etc etc. Tampons/sanitary towels are unique to women of a specific age group. So by taxing that product it is a tax unique to that group, (I have only said free in extreme cases, people on welfare, where they are struggling to buy food). If you can think of a tax on men, , a product that is unique to men that really is essential, not just in hygeine, then yes it shouldn't be taxed, but I struggle to think of one. Your point about trials and black people doesn't come into it, isn't that the definition of straw man argument that you accused me of?

[–]knock_off_yank 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't really have a problem with tampons/pads being provided or heavily subsidised under a public health system.

[–]JStheHammer 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It not that tampons are important. The want free tampons. They also want free tampons for every woman in the world.

Btw, they aren't free someone has to pay for them.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The concept of Rights is pretty simple, or rather the concept of what isn't a right is pretty simple. If someone else has to buy it and give it to you it is not a right.

The word they're looking for is "entitlement"

[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

E.g. food despite it being the most basic need.

[–]BetterBadIdeas 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's like saying toilet paper is a right.

[–]Us3rnam2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I for one approve of a woman's right to tampons. So long as they are purchased by that woman's money and not mine. Having a right to something is not the same as having something given to you at the expense of others.

[–]heimdahl81 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Birth control, sure, but tampons are not a right any more than shoes, a haircut, or deodorant is a right.

[–]GreyTortoise -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Really not a basic right, but a woman really is pretty well banished from civil society during her period depending on severity if she doesn't have a method to control bleeding. Like, she can't be at a workplace or generally in public.

There really isn't a parallel for me to draw to an equivalent situation we men would suffer. Severe incontinence, I suppose.

[–]HardLessontoLearn 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A woman is also banished from society if she doesn't have on pants. So is a man. But pants aren't a right; they're a thing you buy as a civilized human living in society.

Feminine hygiene products are just that, hygiene products. A grouping of products which men use as well in forms of razors, deodorant, toothbrushes, anti-chafing powder, etc. None of these are rights. None of them should be.

[–]GreyTortoise 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Never said anything was a right. Huffington Post may be detestable garbage, and this particular article is certainly just a quick attempt to pander, but you've got to at least empathize with the idea that no one wants to have or be around a bleeding, messy hole. Put a plug in it for all of us, right?

It's okay to say "yeah, that part of being a woman sucks", especially if we expect a woman to look at our issues and say something similar.

[–]HardLessontoLearn 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

With your reply, I see what you're saying. I think the empathy is good and you're right, important to listening to the other side and expecting them to be open to listening. I think the problem that led to your original post being downvoted was that it read like you supported treating it as something akin to a right or were giving credence to the idea that more than empathy was required.

[–]fonduman 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, technically, if she wore dark trousers, doubt anyone would notice.

[–]JustOneRandomGirl 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]AssAssIn46 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Banished? I guess it depends on the country you're in because I've never heard of it happening over here in the UK but I do know it does happen in more "traditional" countries.
