Intersectionality is a new movement in feminism that "is the study of intersections between different disenfranchised groups or groups of minorities; specifically, the study of the interactions of multiple systems of oppression or discrimination."
I feel this is a small step in the right direction for feminists because it admits that men aren't always more privileged than women, depending on other forms of discrimination (such as race, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status).
However, the real kicker is that if you take intersectionality to its fullest form - every individual can be oppressed.
Why?
Humans discriminate for a multitude of reasons in a multitude of contexts - so any characteristic that doesn't fit a desired stereotype in a given situation can be considered a form of "systematic discrimination."
Just one example: as a 5'4 man, I am discriminated against based on my height. Taller men earn more than shorter men (I believe there's no pay difference in women's heights). I'm also fairly shunned in the dating world for my height by women.
I'm not complaining, I'm certainly not calling for an end to the "height gap" nor am I organizing a parade for "short pride" or whatever - I simply see this discrimination as a part of human nature. Whenever you deviate from the norm, you have to deal with potential discrimination. That's life.
The general rule here is that everyone can be singled out for being different or not fitting a "desired stereotype." If feminists took "intersectionality" far enough - they would realize that it's this basic feature of human nature that contributes to much of the discrimination against men and women in certain social contexts, and not some over-arching theory of "patriarchy."
Any thoughts?
