male circumcision was popularized in america during the prohibition era (the time period during which it was illegal for adults to consume alcohol) in an attempt to control men's sexuality. both the prohibition and circumcision were part of a movement called "the third great awakening", which was a religious social movement that pushed back against the "pleasures of the flesh".

the belief was that if you cut off the most sensitive parts of men's penises, they'd have orgasms that are less pleasurable. the hope was that if orgasms didn't feel as good, men would be less likely to engage in "sinful" behavior in pursuit of orgasms.

My partners family are part jew, and they tried to guide the conversation to circumcision and were promptly shut down, and were told their is no way I'd ever do that to him unless it was absolutely necessary such as phimosis and thats it. Absolutely not necessary in the overwhelmingly vast majority of cases. It's serves no medical purpose, the cleanliness argument is invalid with modern sanitation, and is horrendously painful for the newborn. Ever seen a circumcision video? I did, or at least the first 10 seconds. Listening to the child scream in pain as they were peeling the skin back from his penis was more than enough for me. Pure nightmare fuel. I couldn't make it to the part where they started cutting. There was just no way.

Circumcision is nothing more than a barbaric holdback from when people who did know enough to realize they shouldn't shit where they eat thought it was necessary to slice their children's genitals in order to satisfy a all-powerful god with a form of human sacrifice. It and FGM are practices that absolutely belong in the waste bin of history.

Obviously it's not necessary. Most countries don't do it and there are no resulting problems. The incidence of AIDS in those countries is not higher than in countries where circumcision is routinely practised. Apologists have been lying through their teeth about the alleged benefits of circumcision for hundreds of years.

No. Never. Not even for "medical" reasons unless the prepuce has already been destroyed by frostbite, gangreen, or a bad burn... or if there is a cancerous growth on the prepuce, which... is so extremely rare it's almost not worth mentioning. Penile cancer rates alone worldwide are 0.84 per 100,000 people and the chances that the cancer will start at the foreskin and not some other part of the penis is also miniscule. For everything else, there is always a less invasive option available that will cure the problem without amputation.

99% of the time, circumcision is done without medical indication as a routine for cultural or religious conformity. And thus is unnecessary.

Of the 1% of circumcisions done for so called "medical reasons" the most common reason given for it 90% of the time is phimosis or paraphimosis. Phimosis is when the prepuce cannot retract, and paraphimosis is when the prepuce is stuck in a retracted state. Phimosis is actually normal in young children, since the penis is born phimosed in early childhood and becomes retractable on it's own later in life. In this case no intervention is needed, and the prepuce will eventually retract on it's own 99% of the time. If phimosis persists or arises in adulthood, then it's called pathological phimosis, and the most common cause of that is forced retraction in early childhood which can cause scar tissue to build up. It can also be caused by lichensclerosis (BXO) or other infections. However, this can be cured by using steroid creams in conjunction with prepuce stretching rings, such as products like "phimo cure" from the Netherlands. If a patient says it's not working, then they probably aren't using the products correctly. In the rare cases where surgery is required, a full preputial amputation is still not needed.

The other 10% of the time that circumcision is claimed to be done for "medical reasons", is if the patient has balanitis, or in other words, recurrent inflammation or infections of the penis... In these cases, the infection can be cured by using antibiotics or antifungal drugs or creams, depending on the type of infection. Anti-inflammatory drugs/creams, or supplements like turmeric can help bring down inflammation. If the problem is recurrent, it's likely that the patient is using some sort of soap or body wash with harsh chemicals that irritate their prepuce, or is not practicing good hygiene. In these cases the patient should try switching which soap they use, or rinsing without soap, or simply start washing it more and get dirty less. There's also a possibility that they could be getting infections from a sexual partner, who might also need to be checked. Or, if the man is sleeping around a lot, then he should start wearing a condom.

I should also quickly mention that using MGM as a preventative health measure is not only extremely ineffective, but it's also not a medical indication for circumcision. (I can go into more detail about this in another comment if requested).

Also... I've heard plenty of cases of doctors giving bogus medical reasons for circumcision. Most likely so they can charge for it and make more money. The most common of these bogus excuses are probably UTIs or meatel stenosis.. in the case of UTIs, usually all that's needed to cure it is antibiotics, and in the case of meatel stenosis, the cure is a meatotomy, not a circumcision. And in fact, circumcised men are 20 times more likely to develop meatel stenosis than intact men are.

For this reason. I am all for banning MGM WITHOUT any medical exemptions for phimosis or balanitis.. Because you and I both know that religious fanatics will make up bogus medical claims to victimize their sons if it's allowed. We have to start thinking of circumcision as a violation, pure and simple. Never as a "medical procedure". ALL circumcisions (even the ones they claimed to be medically necessary) cause lifelong harm.

Not unless there are serious health problems that cannot be fixed. The only other reason circumcision should be necessary is if the man wants to be circumcised, and needs to be old enough to give proper consent and know what they are agreeing to. In my opinion of course.

I was born into a Muslim country but my parents weren't believers so they didn't do it to me. Sadly, I had to get circumcized because of medical reasons. So it's not really necessary.

So there really is no reason to trim the tip unless you want to follow your religious belief (Which is a totally different rant). Or if you have an actual medical issue.

I got circumcised at 39 because of a medical reason called phimosis. Totally a health issue for me. I am happy I had the choice for myself.

If the argument was diabetes and phimosis runs in the family genetics, I think that would be a good argument for circumcision. That is why I would get my son circumcised at birth. My dad had the condition, and so did his brother. We all were circumcised to cure the condition.

I'm neither Muslim nor Jewish, actually from a Christian background. I was circumcised as a baby. My ex-wife's cousin had himself circumcised at age 16. Said it was the worst pain ever. No regrets here. I'm glad my parents had it done when I was too young to remember it.
