Look up equal protections for your area. In my state, race, gender, age, religion, national origin, marital status, and physical ability are protected classes. As in, you cannot deny someone a service based solely on them being part on one of these groups.

Do you live in the States? Some years back I had a similar issue when trying to add my husband to my lease. They just straight out refused to add him. Didn't matter how good his credit was or how much money he made, they just wouldn't do it.

I've had this happen while looking for places, mainly the smaller or privately owned properties that are smaller/fewer units. Really annoying

In Europe, faced a similar situation. For every gender-neutral accommodation advertised, there are 5 women-only ones. I've never seen a male-only housing here. This is for the more affordable section of the housing market. The more expensive ones are managed by agencies that are less misandric.

I've never had this issue, nor do I recall any of my male friends having this issue.

Landlords can't discriminate based on gender, race, marital status, and other factors.

Landlords can't discriminate, but current tenants can. If you're to be moving in to an empty flat then there shouldn't be any issues, but if you're looking to rent a room then it's at the discretion of the people you'll be moving in with. Especially since they can more than likely argue that when they held interviews that your vibes didn't match, so even if gender discrimination in that case was illegal, then there's nothing you can do about it. Personally I feel like that's an ok ground to settle on, landlords shouldn't be allowed to discriminate based on immutable characteristics, and you shouldn't force people to live with someone they aren't comfortable living with.

The good news is: in a market with perfect competition, systematic discrimination is in theory impossible. Of course, no markets are perfect - and market size is especially constrained. But in most cases, the cumulative average effect of this kind of discrimination should not exceed a few percentage points.

It might not feel that way anecdotally - I am fully aware of that, and I have in fact myself experienced something similar (refusal rather than higher rent).

I spent part of my childhood in apartheid South Africa (as a white person). My uncle, who had a company there, told me of the extents government had to go to to ensure some kind of wage discrimination in favour of whites for the substantial number of jobs actually open to all races (contrary to popular conceptions of ZA). They had liberalised the system when I came, but before that the thicket of regulation and quotas was astonishing. The conclusion: discrimination is very costly and, in the long run, unsustainable for those who perpetuate it. The same can be said for the entire Apartheid system, which even back then and among whites was seen as immoral, irrational and archaic - only the fear of civil war kept it in place to the bitter end.

In America, it is illegal to discriminate on a person based on race, gender or religion for housing. This is backed up by the 1968 Civil Rights Act. You might be able to use a law like this if you don't live in America.

Well men are mostly to blame for this situation , there are a lot of creeps who want to have beautiful women as tenants so they can have a position of power and demand stupid and creepy things from them and there are others fed up from jerks who live like animals and destroy the property so they don't trust men no more. You know how hard it was to rent a place as a male uni student? Everyone thought I was a dumb jock drinking beer smoking weed and partying all day while I was a freaking nerd more silent than a corpse.
