If religion is a personally-chosen belief, then I don't think that's discriminatory. After all, in a free society, Jewish women can decide to form their own reading and prayer groups that exclude men.

On the other hand, where religious principles are enforced by law or by violence - then such a practice becomes discriminatory because it isn't voluntary.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it. Religious practice should be a personal thing and thinking you need to be PC for it is silly, especially if it is not hurting anyone else.

My perspective: I was raised reform Jewish; our congregation had a female rabbi. I am not religious anymore.

Participation alone doesn't mean you yourself are a sexist, but excluding someone on the basis of their sex is discrimination, so if you are uncomfortable with that you should reexamine your views on your religion.

I don't think this is a right place to ask, though. I haven't been there, but maybe you could try /r/Judaism or affiliated subreddits.

The Torah contains at least one verse that clearly states that women should not be teaching and should listen in silence. Those are the rules. Is it discrimination? Very much so, that's the definition of discrimination: different rules for people in different categories. I think your question would be better phrased as "is it wrong?". And that entirely depends on your beliefs. Do you take the Torah to be true and the word of God? If yes, then this discrimination is the way it should be, and you should treat it as God's design for you and your community (and possibly mankind). If however you think that men and women should be treated equally in all things (which can't happen for biological reasons, but you want to strive to make it so when there is no immediate impediment), then you basically have to reject the Torah, and either see yourself as in rebellion against God, or not treat the Torah as sacred. You can also not care about the conflict, but since you are here asking this question, my guess is that this is probably not an option for you.

Based on the responses I've received, I've come to this conclusion: Given the fact that it's a personal, religious choice to lead and participate in a service that doesn't exclude women (see the edit to my original post), there isn't any real discrimination involved - even some women prefer to participate (although, not lead) in the service. Thus, I can stop fretting.

Religion is like a game. Everyone involved has agreed to play by the same rules and you only really have a problem when they try to impose those rules on other people. Play on.

It's not strictly discrimination, or at least not malicious discrimination, but you still have to consider if you're really okay with the religion as a whole. If you do think it's just too sexist, you really shouldn't be in it.

The Jewish faith is essentially patriarchal. All references to goddesses have been removed and replaced with expressions such as "the great abomination." It is not difficult to see that parts of the Bible are re-written versions of Mesopotamian goddess religions, with the female influence removed or transformed into something else.

All three of the major single god religions are essentially patriarchal, though the probable reason was originally to defend men against the abuses of earth mother religions that preceded them (and in the case of Catholicism have re-entered the playing field in a big way.)

Personally, I can't see why women want anything to do with these anti-woman religions (unless of course they are desperately seeking a father-figure to replace the one the family courts destroyed), and I say that as a long term MRA.
