First off, I'm writing from a British perspective, so some dates etc may be different across countries.

I was watching Horrible Histories and they trotted out the old line that suffragettes got women the vote.

This pisses me off.

  1. The suffragettes were just a small part of a much larger women's suffrage movement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_suffrage_in_the_United_Kingdom

  2. Until 1918, most MEN in the UK could not vote: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representation_of_the_People_Act_1918

Yes, I believe ALL citizens of a democracy should have a vote, but it's really annoying that the actual history of that struggle and the people who FOUGHT it has been suppressed.

For example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartism#Newport_Rising

The state used lethal force to suppress working class men and women who wanted equal representation.

But no, it's all "Teh Suffragettez!"
