So exactly how do boys learn?

I've read boys tend to do better with competition and hands on learning styles. No links at the moment (on my phone, will try to check later).

Of course people are all different and trends aren't set in stone biological laws.

Additionally there is a demonstrated bias against boys by female teachers causing many boys to simply give up.

I know that Do and Review works really well for me. It depends on the task, but if we're talking geometry... then we do carpentry. AFTER we've worked with the material we go over the principles and then we do it again. And again. Classrooms these days are so hands off that people don't see the purpose of the material and get bored by it.

I think that a good start would be to stop shoving pills down boys throats, or at least start looking into the issue more. I also think that we should put a little more incentive for boys to pursue higher education. More women have been graduating from college than men for years now. And we still present it like that's some awesome feat.

There is little to no incentive for boys to go to college. There are fewer scholarships and resources for school. I'm transferring to a new university starting in August, and I went to the orientation about two weeks ago (as it was mandatory). I remember hearing about so many scholarships and resources that were available to women. I didn't hear shit about what would be available to me, as a guy. It basically showed me that I will have to work harder and come up with more money to achieve the same goals as my female counter part.

But remember, having more women consistently graduate from college every year than men (for about thirty years), is what society considers 'equality.'

Here's something specifically on boys learning to read.

Basically, if you teach children to read by systematically teaching them which sounds are represented by which letters, then having them read by sounding out the letters in a word, you get far better results (for both boys and girls) than by trying to teach kids to read by memorizing words by overall shape, or through guessing by using the context or pictures as hints.

Teaching in this way not only completely eliminates boys' supposedly inferior reading ability, the boys end up outperforming the girls over time (see table 2) — even though both girls and boys show greater improvement using this method than others.

Moreover, young people, and especially boys, are more likely to be successful in school and less likely to drop out when their parents are involved in their lives and have high expectations for and positive relationships with them. Even if they don’t live together, a good father-son relationship — characterized by frequent contact and open communication — can lead to a boy doing better in school.

Look at it this way. If boys scores have gone down across the board over the last fifty years, and they have, one of two things have happened. Either boys are actually getting dumber every year, or the curriculum, teaching style and grading style have changed to produce this exact result. There's no such thing as a failed policy. If boys find school to be frustrating, repetitive, worthless and a total failure, that is the desired outcome of the policy.

I think Stephen Biddulph also writes a lot about boys, but he's also kind of a feminist so I don't know how helpful he is. He has a lovely sense of humour though.

I think/feel boys need more activity in learning. Teach through action not thru rote memorization. But I will be talking to one of my old teachers, been teaching boys and girls for over 30 years an did a fantastic job. See what she has to say on the subject.

They don't, or at least not at the rates at which girls are being encouraged and absorbing information... hence the drop out rate all across the spectrum.

Those that do learn and succeed probably would have made even more progress had the environment not been as hostile.
