Wasn't this larry summer's hypothesis which landed him in trouble? That male mathematical ability is more variable than female mathematical ability, so that the "best" scientists tend to be more male than female.

It's really ironic that the vitriolic criticism of summers was rooted in a misunderstanding of basic mathematics by feminists. "Oh men and women are equally good at math, that's what the scientists say!" Yes, but his entire point was that men have higher standard deviations, not higher means.

I wouldn't say the top of any field will "always" be dominated by men, but it's definitely important to note that, in light of this, when the top of any field does happen to be dominated by men, that's not in itself evidence of sexism, in fact it's to be expected.

I am not even going to argue if that study got it right or not. Who dominates a field is not as directly related to who is the most gifted in it, as you may think. If women have the highest scores in speech comprehension and language skills, why are they not dominating the literature and journalism awards? Just being talented is only a part of becoming dominant. Let us assume that men have some advantage at very high scores, so what does that mean for the large number of average and below average males (the latter being greater in numbers than women according to this hypothesis)? Nothing, they remain average or worse. Well, they get to say "Most geniuses are all male!" and bask vicariously in the halo of people with which they share nothing much and probably wouldn't understand in a conversation. And since a few males are exceptional, all men get a boost in "self-esteem" although they will forever remain mediocre.
