while i would not let anyone, that is close to me, die instead of me, i don't see why should value the life of some woman i never even met higher than my own. i see the point with children though, i think i couldn't leave kids behind on a sinking ship.

Also what about the Aurora shooting where 3 guys acted as shields in front of their girlfriends and died protecting them. Would a woman ever do that and why not?

Personally this would be an easy choice. If I was on a boat, the chances are it would be just myself, no kids, no relatives, no spouse, no parents to rescue. So basically, fuck the rest of the boat and their children, I'm not drowning.

Wow, something I can weigh in on with some serious experience! I'm a Naval Vet who was a DC (damage control unit) we kept the ship afloat if problems arise/fight fires etc etc.

Now the answer I had been told as to why "women and children first" was pretty sexist in the opposite direction if you believe it.

"They are at most times unnecessary weight, almost always unskilled bodies, and majoritavely tend to be flighty, panicky and screaming which disrupts the (should be) rehearsed act of preventing the ship from going down, if it can be saved, and any captain worth his salt couldn't just yell Abandon Ship at the drop of a hat." So I have to assume it later kind of morphed in to a more chivalrous note of "protect the weak!" vs "scuttle the useless"

I kinda look it at like if I'm on a ship that going down I dun care what you look like if you cannot help or don't know what to do gtfo out of my way, because I do.

And I can imagine back then there being a very small # of ship trained women, not so much now.

I agree that it is unfair that a woman gets a seat before a man just because she is a woman. However, from a biological sense it makes some sense for continuation of the species. Say of you had 1000 survivors, half of each gender, in sample 1. Sample 2 has 1000 people, 900 women and 100 men. Both samples wash up on separate deserted islands. Come back in 10 years and the sample with 900 woman will have a lot more total people than the sample with 500 women since each man can get several women pregnant. Therefore, this behavior is favored by evolution.

Of course, at an individual level, no one is happy to be one of the men who goes down with the ship. I would still fight for my own survival. Like it or not, whoever has the most babies "wins" from an evolutionary perspective.

It's the arrogance of women to just accept the offer as if they are more valuable than men that pisses me off.

Let's look at it another way. Maybe it's not arrogance, but women taking advantage of any loophole of the system. They still do it now by asking for max child support even though they might make 200% more than the man.

People take advantage of the system and any loopholes. That's how many people are.

I would let old or disabled people go ahead of me. I know I can navigate and swim through a sinking ship but they won't be able to.

This is timely... I just posted this yesterday on Facebook:

Just saying, most appeals to equality are only done when the speaker sees themselves in a position of disadvantage. Why is it that men are somehow less valuable than women and it is considered oh-so-noble to sacrifice their lives to ensure all the women survive?

Thought experiment. Ship is sinking. The lifeboat can only fit one more person. The two remaining people are a 70 year old elderly woman and a 19 year old man. Who goes and who stays? Why?

Honestly, this aspect of our society has pissed me off too. Another example of the privilege women enjoy over men.

Were it up to me, I would take the method you propose. Age.

In my mind, the genders are essentially equal. That means that men and women should have an equal chance to get on the life rafts. No playing favorites. You get there first, you get on first. Unless we're talking about children here, in which case age trumps everything else. The kids must be saved first.

There's a certain level of biological programming in our species that makes men bigger and stronger. We are the hunters and we are the protectors. It's a result of our evolution. That's why men being thought of as cowards is looked down upon in almost every culture ever. While I believe in fairness and equality, you can't just override an instinct that's based off of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.

I think a part of it (intentionally or otherwise) is that it was children first and generally their mothers, the less valuable women just lucked out.

That's just my 2 cents.
