Unfortunately, it's very very hard to change peoples opinions on the issue unless they truly want to be informed on their own time.

I felt the same way as a lot of them until recently, because I never knew that there were different types of FGM, or how common they were. I never did my own research, all I had ever learned about it was what I learned from Oprah, and she only highlighted the worst type and made it seem like it was the only type there was.

So many people (including myself, until recently) are incredibly naive when it comes to things the media tells them. "Oprah wouldn't purposefully mislead me!".

That, and I always thought MGM was like getting your ears pierced. Its something that people do to babies because it doesn't really hurt them, and they'll be happy it was done as a baby and not later.

Fortunately, it seems to me (or maybe this is just within my own circle of friends) that people are speaking out more against MGM. They'll still think that FGM is worse, but they think both should be illegal (unless they are getting it done themselves as a consenting adult).

Of course, this doesn't explain why some people who are misinformed are vehemently arguing their position.

ETA: I actually think its a great thing when these comments come up. My view was changed because of a similar reddit comment that lead to a discussion with someone who encouraged me to do my own research. As infuriating as a lot of the comments are, every time this comes up, some views are changed for the better. Baby steps.

They don't understand that there are different types of FGM, all of which are illegal. One of which is analogous to the traditional form of MGM where the foreskin is removed.

Type I — Partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or the prepuce (clitoridectomy). When it is important to distinguish between the major variations of Type I mutilation, the following subdivisions are proposed: Type Ia, removal of the clitoral hood or prepuce only; Type Ib, removal of the clitoris with the prepuce.

Well, Sunna Circumcision is the most common form of FGM and involves removing the anatomical structure analogous to the foreskin: the clitoral hood. Both Sunna and standard MGM permanently expose the glans (glans penis and glans clitoris, respectively). When these procedures are done to non consenting children for cultural or religious reasons, children are being treated as property rather than human beings---future autonomous adults. These are healthy, normal, functional pieces of genital anatomy. Both are genital mutilation. All forms deprive children of their complete bodies and experiencing their sexuality as nature intended, and to the fullest. Personal choice belongs to the person who's body is being altered; there is no reason this decision can't be left to the individuals who's bodies are directly impacted, as consenting adults. Genital integrity is a human right.

Women will support this sentiment because they want to keep their victim status. Men (in America) will support it because they don't want to believe that their genitals have been irreparably altered in a way that would be illegal if they were female.

Disclosure: I'm circumcised and not bitter about it.

My mother is a nurse, she had my older brother circumcised and, upon seeing how barbaric and ultimately medically unnecessary it was, decided not to have myself or my younger brother circumcised. She speaks out actively against it and I couldn't be more thankful that she left me intact.

Even if we assume both procedures are fundamentally different in its extent and effect, aren't both bad enough considering their basic context already? Unnecessary, irreversible cosmetic surgery performed on unconsenting infants with consequences regarding their sex life. That is the least common denominator between FGM and MGM and it should warrant a ban already.

Pro Tip :

Most of the muslim, jewish and orthodox christians out there don't give a flying shit about this subject (as they percieve it not as a "mens rights" issue but an atheism against religious groups issue).

You probably want to tone this one down since these same groups are going to all in if this were, say, boy's education or rampant feminism.

This should be a case of my enemy's enemy is going to be my best friend until we get thru this.
