He didn't really switch sides. According to him he just used the same methods that they using in feminism to access women's situation, to access men's situation. They did not like the results and kicked him out and true to form made false accusations relating to sex criminality against him.

He didn't really suddenly switch sides. He has always been about gender equality. And for a long time he was calling himself a card carrying feminist (card was from the National Organization for Women NOW) even while speaking on behalf of men.

As for why he shifted over? He noticed that the movement that he was involved in was slowly becoming anti-male, instead of pro-equality.

I used to be a feminist too, though nowhere near so active and prominent. Over the years, I noticed two things:

That many feminists were not aiming for equality, but were bigots who wanted advantage over men.
Applying the analytical techniques that feminists used to men instead of women, revealed a whole lot of institutional discrimination against men, which feminists simply ignored.

I also saw that anyone who brought up these points was viciously attacked and shamed by feminists. Together, these things led me to a rejection of feminism for failing to meet its own principles, and an insistence for equal rights in all situations, not just when women would benefit.

I always saw his background more in being an equalitist. He saw a (perceived) imbalance on the womens side and started intervening. As /u/TRPACC pointed out he then used the same metrics with men and found things wanting there as well.

If anything, he's a good example on how life should be approached, instead of this haphazard "me me me me" thinking that dominates both sides of the divide.

Feminists have always claimed they are about supporting equality. Many people who truly want equality are still naive enough to believe this, though as we see with the rise of egalitarianism many people are catching on. Back in the 70s though, pretty much everybody believed it, including Warren Farrell. He became the first male boardmember of NOW, because he believed in equality for all genders and thought that feminism was the way to get there.

Part of that equality meant recognizing that courts discriminate against men, including in regards to child custody. NOW, however, sees nothing wrong with this, and in fact opposes a presumption of joint custody because, according to them, the only reason fathers want custody is so they can get out of paying child support and control women "in the same fashion as do batterers." As somebody who was genuinely interested in equality, Warren Farrell obviously wasn't thrilled with NOW's opposition to Father's Rights Groups. Farrell has many criticisms of feminism, but I believe he's said that feminism's shitty view of fathers and their continued opposition to father's rights groups was the specific issue that caused him to leave NOW and the feminist movement.

He didn't shift away from feminism. Farrell had the audacity to suggest that men deserved equal rights and access to resources too.

For that, he was exhiled and villified.

Never heard of him, but some very enlightening comments here. If true, this guys story should be sidebarred and held up as testament to why feminism should be rejected and in no way seen as a solution to men's issues.

And any men who think it's worth talking to or engaging with feminists really owe it to themselves to understand his transition.
