Why is rape more distressing than murder and bloodshed in comics?

Because despite what feminists claim. We don't live in a culture that normalises, encourages or tolerates rape. Society views rape as a special kind of evil, far worse then all other forms of violence.

Domestic violence also gets this treatment.

The reason isn't the act itself, it's the victim. Nobody cares if you murder dozens, hundreds, thousands, millions or even billions of men, but rape one woman and now you're such a terrible villain your entire universe might get cancelled.

This is where social contruction does in fact apply. Babies and young children do not have a disgust reponse. That is why they will put shit in their mouths, both literally and metephorically. Disgust is aquired from the culture by the age of about 8. This also explains why Westerners will not eat dogs but some Eastern cultures will.

Murder in fiction is result of the retelling of war stories. The killing of bad people in fiction, ie the enemy, normalises the activity in real life. It is in fact heroic. The people who control society will not discourge this as they require men to fight wars for them. Rape on the other hand is a threat to the breeding success of the powerful.

I think in this case it's more distressing because it's forced upon them. I don't know that particular comic, but even if they didn't choose to have super powers, they did choose to be a super hero. Super heroes are expected to be hurt in the line of duty. They aren't expected to be raped.

I also can imagine that the scene was not done very tactfully which makes it very cringe worthy.

Because murder is a one-time thing. You can't get killed several times, or suffer from the aftereffects of dying, since you're dead. Rape has more potential to cause harm to someone long after the fact.

Because rape has lasting psychological effects.Being dead just means youre dead,you stop thinking,so you cant actually even imagine yourself in such a situation.Thats why in a dream when you are falling to your death,you always wake up the moment you hit the ground or right before.

As for the Invincible comic, that was a poorly executed and to create a shock and awe for Invincible to get raped by a woman is just for the sake of shock value. It just another plot device to maintain violence for the sake of having violence, instead of sticking with the parameters of the story. It's like it is the best Kirkman can really do is to create excessive violence to tell a story, like he did with the Walking Dead. That is why it lost it's shine because it gets boring and repetitive.

Kirkman should really stick to the horror genre.
