I saw a post on another sub where someone was complaining that they hate the fact that people are expected to be proud of their partners when they come out as gay. i.e. a man and a woman are in a relationship, some time later, one party comes out and says, "actually, I am gay", and the other party is expected to be proud and happy with this new revelation. The comments were stating that if it happened to them, they would be happy for their partner because they love them and wants to see them happy. This got me thinking about a few things and want to hear your thoughts, especially your thoughts on question 2.

  1. What is the meaning of pride? Why must the general public celebrate the fact that a man wants to sleep with another man and a woman wants to sleep with another woman? My view, I am not proud, the same way I am not proud of a man liking women or a woman liking men sexually. There's nothing to be "proud of" as an outsider. The individual can be proud, but I would not be proud along with them. What's next, would I be expected to be proud of the fact that someone enjoys eating apples?

  2. In the case where people are in a relationship and one comes out as homosexual, should the other party be happy and proud? If you answer yes, does that mean you would also be happy if your partner came out and told you he/she is no longer sexually attracted to you and is sexually attracted to another person they saw on IG of the opposite gender? One might argue that the person did not know they were gay initially and only found out later on, ok fair, but does that mean that if a man, initially found his girl sexually attractive and later on found another girl he is sexually attracted to, the girlfriend would be expected to be proud of the guy, because initially he did not know he was attracted to that girl?

Before you argue about how one is a sexual orientation and the other is a preference, remember, we are discussing this from your perspective here as the party who just found out that the other person is no longer sexually attracted to you while they initially did. Should you be expected to be proud and happy?

This post is a discussion post and serves to seek some light on question 1, no ad hominem comments allowed.
