Aka, "5 Reasons You Get Tricked Into Believing Stupid Things".
I'm not always a fan of Cracked (some would say they're "SJW"s lately) but I love this article - it's deep and important and applies to all ideologies, not just TRP. My takeaway is that you should take care not to "buy" into an ideology, or at least be aware of these reasons why you may be buying into it that have nothing to do with how "truthful" or illuminating it is:
-
5 People care only about "what works"
-
4 It's all about fear
-
3 Friends matter more than politics
-
2 People tend to have similar morals; radically different conclusions come from believing radically different sets of 'facts'
-
1 Most people end up in their group of accident.
A tangent, let me just vent on point 1 here, I grew up in Mormonism. Does anybody really think all the Mormons around me objectively evaluated Mormonism and chose it? Of course not, although it was amusing to see some people claim they did! No, they were Mormon by accident of birth.
A few choice bits from the article:
(point 4) "So the reason that bitter guy on YouTube is screaming about "feminists" probably isn't because he hates Susan B. Anthony or women's suffrage. It's because he hates some very abrasive, dismissive woman who was rude to him on Tumblr. The average liberal hates Ann Coulter, not Adam Smith. You wind up on the left because you're running from a monster you saw on the right, but on the way you'll pass a panicked man fleeing in the opposite direction."
(point 3) "If somebody came along and said their ideology was ugly hate-mongering, that guy wouldn't have heard it as a criticism of his ideas. He'd have heard it as a criticism of his friends. "Hate mongers?!? I'd trust my bros with my life!""
(point 2) "Now, in order to preserve the good vs. evil narrative, here is where we say that the other side is simply lying about what they believe. The witch hunters didn't really believe in witches; they just wanted an excuse to mutilate women. Conservatives don't really think Obamacare is tyranny; they just want an excuse to keep poor people sick. Liberals don't really think sexism and racism are rampant; they just like to throw out accusations to shut down debate."
