Have you noticed that a lot of people nowadays are becoming misanthropic and using technology to distance themselves from others? There are many technological advances that allow us to distance ourselves from others physically and emotionally. Examples include:

  • cars, which allow us to travel long distances without interacting with anyone (in contrast to e.g. the train)
  • social media and messaging apps, which not only allow us to connect with others without being in the same room but also allows us to block others easily
  • online delivery allows us to get everything we need e.g. food without leaving our home and interacting with others
  • suburban living allows us to live spread out and far away from others thereby limiting social interaction.

Many people seem to be afraid of being hurt or betrayed, which would explain why they would rather distance themselves from others. This trend may explain the decline in dating, marriage, and even fertility rates.

Isolation, solitude and individualism are not necessarily bad because you can shield yourself from other people trying to harm and exploit you. Individuals who are by themselves do not need to worry about the potential toxicity of relationships or children. They are free to pursue their own interests and passions without having to worry about the needs of others. Individuals who learn to be content with being single can experience a great feeling of solitude, which can be a source of great peace and fulfilment. Being single can also be liberating. People can learn to be happy on their own.

Society likes to tell us that we need to be in a relationship to be happy, but that's not true. Being single can mean more freedom, independence, and less drama.
