I mean... I'm sure it definitely "counts" to the victim.

I also think it can give us some insight into why rape happens, and illustrates the fact that it isn't all always about sex or lust, but about power, control, intimidation and violently reinforcing a social hierarchy. This is true both in and out of prison.

That said, I do believe this:

If you really want to stop rape in prison, then you're welcome to start your own political movement about it that does not involve using it as an excuse to bash feminism.

The incarcerated population in the US exceeds 2M. The number of women in the US military is 200,000. By your logic raping women in the military "doesn't count" since 1) it doesn't affect most people and 2) the military is an atypical environment where people do not behave "normally".

I agree that the existence of prison rape is not a reason to bash feminism, but Jesus fucking Christ there is a total lack of empathy in this post.

I'm sure it's extremely relevant to the human being suffering such a terrible ordeal. Nobody would say that war rape of women is an extreme example so it doesn't count.

If you wanted to have a nuanced conversation about how the rape culture in prison doesn't necessarily mirror the experience of those "on the outside," this isn't how to do it.

1) Fine. You know what? Be upfront about it. It's a women's movement. If that's true why do half of you start gaggling about how feminism cares about the well being of humanity as a whole and cares about everyone's problems? Why do you care if a man doesn't like feminism and waste your time on youtube and what not telling him everything feminism has to offer and convincing him?

The goalposts just shift like crazy whenever it suits your needs. I don't go around telling you to become a trp member do I? I don't think I've ever told anyone to join. I've tried helping people but I've never asked anyone to identify with trp philosophy and seeing the rest of the content here I don't see any one else doing that either. You know what though? I see feminists doing that all the time.

2) "Not being a typical environment" becomes a valid argument for prison rape not counting the exact same day feminists stop looking at how the top 1% of men have it better than women (and essentially everyone but that's not mentioned). To me, that's not exactly a typical environment either.

except that the very phrase "Rape Culture" was STOLEN from a 1974 film about male prisons by the feminist movement. Prison rape isn't just a male issue. I doubt that women in their own prison blocks are immune from being assaulted. Saying it's irrelevant isn't helpful. Neither is using it as a bludgeon against Feminism, as well.

Arguing the polar opposite of a bad argument isn't right. Both are issues that need to be dealt with, period.

Fun story, 'rape culture' originally referred to the culture of rape that existed in prison. You know, where rape actually is culturally accepted as just 'something that happens and is okay' It's actually feminists who co-opted the term from another political movement (prison/ criminal justice reform) and bastardized it to somehow mean 'a dude who doesn't cross his legs while sitting on a bench'.
