If you choose a field for anyone other than yourself you’re likely going to end up miserable.

My line of work is hardcore engineering, I made almost no friend at work and never had a relationship, because the field is sterile and nerdy af, but unfortunately it’s where I landed and it’s still rewarding enough, as a job.

I built my social ecosystem on my interests and hobbies, which is where I made friends and got into relationships.

You should do whatever you can to be constantly out and in the position to know new people. The more new people you meet, the more likely the possibility to also meet people you're more compatible with as well.

And not just studying and working. Hobbies too. Spare time activities.

Being alone is routinely a choice. Making the choice to not be alone is incumbent upon you.

Yes, it is possible to be among people and be lonely, but it's also a lot more likely to be lonely if you're not among people. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

It's what I always push my mentees in my programme for young men. It always works. With some it takes as much as 12 months, but it's never the case that it doesn't work.

What do you enjoy/like? This is the best place to start, because you already enjoy these activities/pursuits. Then follow with what do want to do? These activities and pursuits open up even more potential. For example after my first divorce, I wanted to run a marathon. So started training. Parkrun. 10k runs. 20km runs. Then found out about obstacle racing. Couldn’t convince any of my friends to join. So started a training group myself. Then found about another group. So joined my group to theirs. Made a whole new group of friends.

Ultimately work is a common place to find relationships, due to propinquity. It’s however not advisable. If you want to share commonalities with others, you need to make the effort to actively put yourself in those spaces.

I feel like choosing a job just to get dates is terrible life advice. Could it help? possibly, but your career path is pretty important and you should be focusing on what you enjoy and what you're good at.

Stick to what you’re good at I bounced around from job to job it’s not the way trust me. Women don’t need to come from immediate work environment they can come from orthogonal but adjacent fields

I was a carpenter for a rich lady interior designer and got with her hot young assistant

A nurse

A chemical testing technician

A motorcycle shop retail assistant

Point is the job doesn’t matter nor does the social clique just keep your head down and go to work pay no mind to fools

This line of thinking comes from a defeatist attitude that you are going to spend most of your life working.

I for one am a firm believer of the r/FIRE movement. So I'd say best to just do what gets you the most money. Grind for a decade and you'd be able to retire into whatever social environment you want.
