I was kinda surprised I didn't find anything on this when I searched!

I'm engaged, getting married in July. We are both virgins, but obviously we want to have sex a lot once we're married. We want to wait on kids for up to about 5 years and then have probably two or three.

I've read that hormonal birth control may affect (good or bad) the chances of contracting various cancers, so it may be worth saying that she had bone cancer in her leg as a teen, but has been clean for ~7 years now.

So, we need to choose how to go about birth control. There's no clear best answer and a lot of information to sift through, so I'd like advice. My dad mostly went with timing (i.e. less sex) and the world would go with birth control and abortions as backup. I figure the married men on here can relate the best to the sex life and morals that I'm going for.

My thoughts so far:

  • Hormonal (she'd want the shot) - Seems effective without many health problems, but I've heard it messes with her sexuality, such as being attracted to different face types and behaviors. I don't fully understand the menstrual cycle so some of it is beyond me.
  • Nonhormonal IUD - Haven't researched much yet, but could work. I don't know if she can get it while a virgin though.
  • Condoms - Pretty straightforward, but sometimes they break so they aren't sufficient alone. Also kind of a hassle and I don't know yet whether I'll like how they feel.
  • Caps, diaphragms, and spermicide - no more reliable than condoms, and apparently a bit of a hassle for her to put in every time. She was initially hesitant about putting things inside like that, but if I wanted she'd be willing to try.
  • Fertility awareness/cycle tracking - somewhat reliable, but limits how often we can have sex (so I'd really rather not)
  • Pulling out - sometimes, sure, but not every time.
  • Temporary vasectomy (Vasalgel) - I wish, but it's not available yet.
  • Regular vasectomy - I could freeze some sperm and get snipped, then try a reversal with the frozen shots as a backup, but this is expensive and has a high risk of us never having kids.
  • Morning-after pills - I thought these caused embryo abortions (I view killing embryos as abortion), but it seems like maybe they don't? So a potential backup to condoms or another method.

That's all the options on here, plus a couple of my own. What would you suggest?
