3 main problems with John Eldredge

Time and again he refuses to call out the rebellion of feminism against traditional Patriarchy.
Like all Complementarian Christians, he gladly orders men to lead... but will not dare to ask women to follow, much less obey. Not surprisingly, he is also a huge advocate of the "men pursue, women respond" nonsense. Take that away and half his teachings evaporates.
In his book Captivating, he will reveal that he actually believes women are a finer creation than men, since women is created after men and is "the soprano of all creation, the crown jewel" or something like that. This point alone should tell us everything we need to know about his beliefs

Being a former fan of his, I used to be quite uncomfortable at how he seems to be really... not very masculine in his mannerisms, and in the way he presents himself when speaking. I also noted how, for a supposed author of masculinity, his books uses much feminine language and descriptions. He definitely appealed to emotions 100x more than he appealed to logic throughout his books.

The last straw was watching an interview he and his wife was giving. His wife first described herself as a "staunch, former feminist" and how they both now still very much support women's rights and equality. She was the one clearly controlling the relationship and John's narrative, and it really opened my eyes and answered many questions I always had about him.

All these reasons led me to place John Eldredge as firmly blue pill, or at best purple-pill. I encourage you to see for yourself.

As a homeschooling dad, I love Voddie's work as it made me build a stronger frame around leading my family in all aspects of life. However, I'm not sure where he is on marriage based on a few comments I've heard where he expressed that men should get married as soon as they can if they've found a potential bride instead of delaying to "have fun". I haven't heard a deep-dive in this view but I'm afraid that in the mind of most young Christian men, we'll get oneitis very fast and wife up the first woman that seems to be wifey material. Now, if he meant to avoid sexual sin or to avoid long engagements when YOU KNOW you're planning on marrying her anyway but you want to sleep around or be immature, that's another topic and I mostly agree. However, he referred to men wanting to have fun in life, travel, finish school, etc. instead of getting married, because they view marriage as not fun and an impetiment to them being able to enjoy life. At that point, I think Paul points a bit of this out when he talks about the advantage of being single, so I disagree with Voddie's take.

As someone who settled down and married when I was very immature. I teach my son's to focus on building that great life in the Lord, and if he sends them a wife to join them "in the garden", great. If not, keep it moving and keep building your life in Christ. So I'd speculate that Voddie may be very blue pill in that view, despite seeming to be very red pill in his overall demeanor.

You made a really good point about the possibility of Voddie being far more blue pill than I initially thought. I've thought about it. At a minimum, I think his "wifing" material can be screened out, but someone would need to be discerning about it. And you're right -- I'd be reluctant to give his family books to young men graduating high school and going to college. I encountered him after I had already been married (and was very blue pill) and found him helpful (thus, I was already far past your objection).

But I wonder how blue pill his advice really is? I think he is mainly talking to men who put off marrying someone they intend to marry someday. But, like you and I have both attested to, there is a danger in rushing into marriage while immature about the whole thing. Good discussion

But first, Paul would like to talk to the MEN...??!

Now, I want to just, for just a moment I want you to think, before we get to the idea of a women submitting to her husband, I want you to just think about something. And this… men, this is also for you.

Let’s say that there is a woman who looks at the biblical command of a woman submitting to her husband. And then she looks over at her husband. He’s a guy who works all the time. But he works all the time, not necessarily to provide for his family. He works all the time and then he’s with his buddies and then he’s getting all kinds of things for his hobbies, and he’s all about what he likes to do. And in doing all the things he likes to do with all his buddies, he’s basically neglecting his wife and his children.

And a woman looks over at that and says to herself, “I’ve got to submit to that? To a selfish boy, who basically lives for himself?” That can really make a woman bitter.

Now, but if a woman looks over and sees a man, and imprinted upon his face is, “Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done.” She can look at him and she can still become embittered. Why? Because he can say that and basically say the same thing. “I’ve got to neglect you and our children because I’m all about the Kingdom of Heaven”.

How many pastor’s wives have become embittered because the husband has sacrificed his family for Jesus sake? Okay. And that’s amazing because Romans 12: 2 says that the will of God is perfect, and what it means is this: you don’t have to disobey some of God’s commands in order to obey the other ones. So, you don’t have to disobey what God commanded you to do in regards to your wife and children in order to obey Him in what He commanded you to do in the ministry.

But if a woman looks over and sees a man, and the man is “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, hallowed be Thy Name.” and he begins to live that out within his closest relationships, that he strives that “the Kingdom come” in his wife in fullness of joy and he strives that the Kingdom come into his children, and the woman sees that he sacrifices friends, hobbies, everything else for the sake of blessing his family, then a woman looks at a man like that and goes, with a twinkle in her eye, “Yea, yea I can follow a guy like that, who is selflessly giving himself away to his family. Sure.”

Do you see, men, again the responsibility of leadership?

So the important thing about being a Biblical woman, is that MEN have to do X and stop doing Y.

Oh what, you thought Paul was gonna criticize women? HAHA no, that's not his job! Women are under YOUR authority, not his!

You say, “Well, you’re talking about us again. We wanted you to yell at our wives for a while.”

But see, again, if you’re going to be… you know this. Some of you men are over other men. You have jobs that place you over other men. If those men that are under you mess up, the boss doesn’t go talk to them, does he? He talks to you. Your men messed up. They are under your authority.

Do you see? It’s the same way. And so, you know, this is something that is extremely important.

The rest of the sermon is one big message to... men...?

Paul Washer just delivered a message to men, teaching them how to be women. Unbelievable.

If a husband is not satisfied with his wife, it’s his fault because it’s his job to wash her in the Word so that she becomes more spotless and more pleasing to him.

Never heard of him. I quit following the entire Evangelical Church scene back in 2015 after I found out that, for everything Ray Comfort/Paul Washer/Reinhart/Reinhard Bonnke preached about, there was a Church Father somewhere in the history of Christianity who has preached the exact same thing before. Except those Church Fathers are a lot more Red Pilled than these modern-day clowns.

Some examples are Tertullian, St Clement of Rome, Clement of Alexandria, and of course John Chrysostom. Thomas Aquinas of the Catholic Church is my latest favourite, Martin Luther is my all time favourite.

EDIT: If I'm being honest, I find these modern day preachers to be mostly charlatans. They convince the entire Church to forget about past Church Fathers, and pretend like they are the first person in 2,000 years to say X or Y. Worst, by getting us to forget our past, these preachers are now free to sell their own brand of Christianity. Judgement awaits these men.

Yep. Not affected at all. In fact feminism, as a movement, really only begun in the 1800s. Right away you can see the influence of it on 1800s Christian authors, such as GK Chesterton. A very "Red pill" man by modern standards, he still preached a small extent of women worship.

I personally started with St. Clement of Rome, followed by Martin Luther.

Pope Clement I of Rome (90AD~) is the 4th Bishop of Rome (aka Pope) after Peter. His letters are the earliest authentic Christian documents outside of the New Testament. It is interesting to note the changes within the Church between 50-60 AD of the New Testament, and 90AD by the time of Clement I. He only had a few epistles so you can start with any.

Martin Luther is my favourite Christian preacher, because like him, I felt like I had been fed a false version of Christianity all my life. When we woke up, I was very angry at the Evangelical Church, and Martin Luther even more so. (at the Catholic Church) His treatise "Martin Luther: On the Freedom of a Christian" made me cry more than I will admit lol. I definitely recommend starting with this book.

St.Irenaus "Against Heresies" is very deep, but read it to learn how the Church has already dealt with countless modern heresies in 200AD, including "speaking in tongues". 200AD! If only we paid attention.

Really, nothing these modern pastors say is new. Everything they pretend to preach, someone has already wrote it down thousands of years ago. "Later" Church leaders (after 1000AD) are basically adding to the work of previous Church Fathers. Even Martin Luther, who supposedly "broke off" from the Church, refers to the works of earlier Church Fathers countless times when writing his. It's like one huge peer-reviewed process, later people have the benefit of more wisdom accumulated over the years. Christianity is a 2,000 years old religion, and that is a great thing.

The only thing that is new now is Feminism, really. But oh, pastors will NEVER talk about this...

"Puritanism" originally started out as Protestants who seek to eradicate any trace of Roman Catholicism amongst themselves. Obviously, no such "puritans" exist today.

I can't comment much about Calvin, I'm afraid. I'm a huge Martin Luther fanboy and as of now I haven't got myself to read Calvin, at all. Lol!

Original, definitely. Not sure what you mean by "revisions", but my former Evangelical Church used to let us read a little John Chrysostom... but with a lot of commentary and interpretation. They somehow managed to spin John Chrysostom into the biggest feminist who has ever lived. No kidding. You wanna avoid nonsense like this.

Also, keep in mind that Christians do not hesitate to change and even downright mistranslate the words of the Church Fathers. You know how Christians respect the Bible, and every word, every single translation is scrutinized and carefully considered? Yeah, no such respect is given to Church Fathers. Everyone freely quotes and changes the Fathers' words for their own personal gain. It can get quite disgusting. I suspect that's why there are "revisions".

Let's start by looking at this sermon, but this time, through a red pill lens. Here, our beloved Mr Washer tells men what attitude they should have towards women. Some alarm bells ringing already, but we'll let it slide.

First of all, it's very important for you, a man, to know that you can say whatever you want to a girl, it does not matter!

Here’s something you need to understand. A girl does not listen to what you say. She looks at what you do.

Oh but if she still gets the wrong idea, it's your fault. If you ever friendzoned or accidentally friendzoned a girl, it's still your fault. Don't you know that girls never friendzone guys?

You can tell her all day long you are just friends, she is not going to believe you if you keep coming around. And even though you, probably, cannot see it, if she’s still around you and hanging around you as a friend, it’s because that’s the best that she can do right now and she’s hoping your sentiments toward her will change.

You are doing wrong. Okay?

You also better know that girls are just more emotionally invested in each and every relationship they are in than guys ever will be.

When I talked about, you enter into a relationship with someone of the opposite sex, you enter into a relationship with a girl, that there is an emotional bond there that’s never going to be erased even if there’s no physical contact. Well, it’s even more so for her. It’s even more so for her. Okay.

After all, she is a daughter of God, and God loves His daughter. So she must be the Prize! And you, what, a peasant? You should be terrified!

And again, let me say this, one of the most terrifying things for a man is to take to himself a daughter of God, because God loves His daughter.

It is therefore very important that you white-knight every girl you meet, even if you doing so creeps them out and makes them dryer than the Sahara. Okay?

When you are around girls, you treat them with the utmost dignity, even though, it might even be offensive to them. I mean, honestly.

You are not to even play with girls. You don't have fun with them. Such disrespect you can only show to men. Women deserve a higher level of respect.

But, you are to be different. You are to treat girls completely different. You do not wrestle with them, you do not play with them, you do not punch them, you do not grab them, you do not yell at them. You do not talk to them the way that you may rough house around another guy. God’s will is that you demonstrate the utmost respect and you afford them dignity, even if they do not even care.

Therefore, men! It is your job to make sure that girls today are not used to men accidentally brushing her hands.

I said, “Girls, how many of you have seen a BBC’s version of Pride and Prejudice..." And I said, “...you live in a culture that has killed beauty. It’s killed dignity, it’s killed innocents. It’s killed manners, and courtesy, and chivalry, and absolutely everything. And here you watch this movie where women dress a certain way, they’re refined in a certain way, they don’t participate in the brutish things of men. “It’s like this,” I said, “Young girls, can you imagine a movie where a girl is sitting there and all of the sudden a guy reaches for a book and while he reaches for the book, she reaches for the book and he happens just to touch her hand lightly, while he’s reaching for the book, and it literally takes her breath away.”

See, we can’t experience that any more can we? Because we’re so, just immoral, and gross, that the touching of a hand can’t cause your heart to beat faster. It can’t take your breath away, because of the culture in which you live. The death of beauty. It’s your job to restore that in your life and in the life of your wife, to restore that. That is your job.

Husbands! If your wives don't submit to you, you're probably at fault

Now, if a woman believes, a godly girl believes that she is to submit to her husband and she looks over there and all she sees is an immature boy, who does everything for himself, that is a great way of creating bitterness in her heart. But if she looks over there and sees a husband that his whole focus is this, “Hollowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done.” And he’s using everything he has, all his gifts, his talents, his authority, his place as a husband and father, he’s using it all to bless his wife and children and to bless the church and to bless the world, it’s easy for her to submit to a man like that.

"If you don't wanna marry you're selfish..."

And really, some guys, and I’m not mad at them, but some guys should just say, “I’m not going to marry. I want to be selfish and I want to play with my friends.”

"Submit... BUT only if you deem him holy enough..."

She recognized, that he was given a tremendous gift, unlike very few men that ever lived on the planet. She molded her life around, not him, but what God was doing in him. She recognized that he was one of the greatest Christian scholars that ever walked the planet. And she said, he needs to be locked away in that office thirteen hours a day, or whatever, studying and writing. She took care of everything.

That’s what you’re looking for guys.

But wait, there's more! You're a guy, so Paul Washer can WHIP you, you know that?

Guys, let me tell you something. It is biblical, it would be biblical for me, to pull off my belt and whip you. Okay? If I ever go to your home when you come home from school, and you go back to see your mom and dad, and she has to do your wash, pick up your underwear, and make your bed, you deserve to be horse whipped.

It is VERY important that women never wash your underwear, or you will be whipped! Okay?

Your mother was not brought into this world to do your wash. As soon as a young man is able, he aught to be picking up his room, cleaning his room, making his bed, doing his wash, and everything else. Mom is not his servant.

You’re wife is not your servant. She will manage the home, and she will do wash and laundry and things like this, but she should not be picking up your underwear. Okay?

Fathers, if you work crazy long hours to support your family, you have abandoned your family. The entire failure of the Church to stand against Feminism is your fault.

But see, you’re not going to be able to do that if you’re a dislocated father, whose just abandoned the family, because all you do is bring home the money.

And then you wonder, “Why can’t we combat culture?” This is why.

Young men, if you are attracted to pretty girls, you have a wicked heart.

Now, next, the young man should prayerfully evaluate his own motives as to why he’s attracted to a certain young lady.

Why are you attracted to this young lady? Are you attracted to biblical beauty or are you attracted to sensuality? Sensuality proceeds from a wicked heart.

Still want to marry? Pretend your father still authority over you. Doesn't matter how ridiculous it is, just pretend.

First of all, from his father. Even if you’re father is an unbeliever, you should honor your father and go to him, even if he laughs and don’t want to do it, at least make the attempt. Go to him and say, “Father, do you think that I am prepared to marry?”

Next, you pretend that her father's decision is final

First of all, the young woman’s father has the right to deny permission immediately.

But does the girl have to obey all her father's wishes regarding her marriage and her future?

The key to reversing the tide of feminism, is for everyone to pretend hard enough, no matter how inpractical it is.

And someone says, “What if they live across the country?” Dude, take a plane. This is important. I mean, you’ll spend money to go to Walt Disney World. I mean, this is important.
