If they followed God there wasn't any issue, Moses married a Ethiopian woman so a jewish man a black woman got together and God had no issue with that.

Numbers 12 is what you're looking for.

He married a Midianite/Cushite/Ethiopian woman, and Miriam had a problem with it. God had more of a problem with her beefing Moses than with Moses choice in wife, and Miriam was cursed with leprosy.

I myself come from an interracial marriage that ended when I was a kid, so I lack a strong sense of family and culture, which tends to alienate a lot us interracial kids from ever feeling apart of anything.

I would definitely echo your sentiments to a large degree. As a man who is more than 5 races, who has mixed divorced parents, and has researched many experiences of those like me who are now Christian conservatives (including Elliot Hulse): If you're a white guy and you prefer white woman, black guy and prefer black women, asian guy and prefer asian women: don't let ANYONE, including /u/arjungmenon, make you feel bad about it. Your collective families will integrate that much better, and you give subsequent generations more ability to integrate.

That being said... some people are not attracted to their own race whatsoever. Are you then going to marry your own race and have children with a woman you aren't attracted to, just so you can be weak to lust of the eyes for other women your entire life?

All I can say, whether you go same race or different race, it has no bearing on "racism" and hatred for races. Don't get pulled into that nonsense.

Culture is an evolving thing. Culture is something people create.

You could create your own culture. I understand the sense of loss, and the sense of not belonging. It require a more resolute will, and a bit more forthrightness, and to do so.

You could read the history of empires of the past. A lot of empires were melting pots, with a lot of blending of different cultures and traditions.

Even in ancient cultures like the Babylonians of 2500 years ago, there was a substratum of Sumerian culture was a distinct (even linguistically) from the Babylonian culture around it.

I would definitely echo your sentiments to a large degree.

Oh bro you don’t need to feel sorry for me, I’m not over here crying in a corner. My childhood was very difficult, and I had to get accustomed to a life without a close knit family is all I’m saying.

The whole idea of creating a culture is that a culture requires continuity to a certain degree. There is no asian, black, white, indian, african, brazilian, etc culture without continuity. A culture that is mixed, is generally just going to be not a culture but either point to cultures with a sense of continuity, or will be normalized to the point where there IS no culture in it, it’s just something some people do or don’t do.

You might want to try enumerating exactly what culture is, very specifically and thoroughly. That word is used to mean a hundred different things. It's one of the most poorly defined words; or at least a word with worst broad consensus among people on the definition.

The idea of culture is very amorphous, and whatever people make it up to be.

And once you've enumerated exactly what culture is, you then might want to try to explain what exactly you wish to protect or retain in some specific 'culture'.

I've read a lot of history, and you can see "culture" change when countries come into contact, merge, etc. Culture, again here, is an amorphous concept. Some people it to mean the language, cuisine, marriage/dating traditions all change for the better. You need to define exactly what aspects of X culture you are so attached to.

IMO, if a change is in a direction that is more aligned with values espoused in the Bible, I would say it's a good change.

For example, if twenty years from now, some religious zealots imposed new laws criminalizing adultery/cheating, that would emphatically be a good thing. In the U.S. this would be a simple matter of overturning certain supreme court precedents, c.f. https://ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4712&context=flr That would trigger a massive a change in culture.

I wouldn't say culture is what people make it up to be, I would say that people take existing words and supplant them with new definitions with an agenda in mind (or brainwashed with an agenda).

Culture is "history" of a particular group, that is generally (doesn't have to be, but generally) unique to that group. There can be no cultural history without continuity of a group. Think about "who" we talk about when we say culture. Americans, Europeans, Africans, Mexicans, Australians. We're not only implying continuity of race, but continuity of location. Continuity of culture is so impactful that, you take someone who is Mexican, and they move to "Africa" and live in Africa, but we call THEM by the place they and their ancestors were originally from: "Mexicans". We could associate race and location differently but we don't.

Again, culture describes continuity in a group. To be clear, whether living in a way where we build culture is something we should aim for or not aim for is a separate discussion that should be kept separate so we don't confuse what is, from what is ideal. But culture isn't some thing that people can just change the definition of. It has already meant the same thing, our society just loves taking things and warping them so that these things mean what they want them to mean.

Couple of problems here.

People interpret the Bible differently. There's like thousands upon thousands of denominations, and "disagreements" being new denominations waiting to happen. People have used the Bible to justify homosexuality of all things (and no I'm not kidding, that's a thing) so... we just have to be careful because things aligning with the Bible carries with it the connotation that it aligns with our perspective / denomination / interpretation
I'll give you an example of something that "could" be interpreted as the idea that we're supposed to be separate as an example of this. Genesis 11:7 shows an example of people unifying, and God scatters them and confuses their language. The reason we have different cultures (if you interpret the Bible literally) is that God "purposely" scattered us. Do I think this is arguing against interracial marriages? It doesn't matter. The point is that we can find many different things in the Bible to fit our stances, and disagree when someone brings up a passage as being the evidence of some point they're trying to make... so merely saying "well x, y, and z" is biblical isn't sufficient.

You haven't asked me outright yet so I'll explain what I believe: I believe races and cultures are different but complementary, the same as the relationship between man and wife. Again I'm multiple races so I KNOW how races perceive themself, and each one perceives itself as different, and having different qualities. For instance, being apart of the black community, black people ALWAYS talk about getting a strong black king, or strong black queen. Rap / R&B is common, and is considered "black culture" (that is, black people in this modern day believe that other cultures appropriate their culture... meaning that they themselves identify these things as their culture... that's important as someone could come to the conclusion that saying all black people liking rap is racist... no this is a perception in black culture by black people). Spanish people are different as well. The music is entirely different... afrocuban roots. If you're Puerto Rican, you probably are used to being around Salsa and bachata music. Spanish people are "close". We kiss each other on the cheek. We dance. We definitely are ok with sexuality and closeness more than other cultures and races. We eat different foods. And everyone likes the unique quirks and characteristics of their own race and culture and IDENTIFIES that it's different from others. There are countless comedians who have made a living off of citing the differences between the races by painting it in a positive light.

Here's the thing. And stick with me here because here is where the emotional mind can flare up.

Each race and culture recognizes that (rule of thumb) it is different from others, and people like facets of their culture and other cultures. If some people can "like" something, they can also "dislike it". There are black people who inherently think Spanish people are too touch feely and sexual, and their music is too jovial, their food is nasty (cooked bananas, etc). There are latin people who inherently think black people are too aggressive, rap music is uncouth, and don't like soul food or whatever. The things we like, others can dislike. The same reasons I gave for disliking a culture and people, are the same reasons we like. The only thing is that, if a white person goes "Oh I LOVE black people... so strong and confident", everyone is ok with that and black people will generally agree with the sentiment (again I know, I have tons of black family, they'll tell you this outright). But if a person doesn't like overly confident / aggressive people and then doesn't like someone for this reason, we then call them racist, just because they don't prefer something that another person does. It USED to be the case that racism meant so much more. It meant that, REGARDLESS of a persons skin tone, you hate them and believe them to be lower in value. Nowadays, if you don't want to have sex with a gay person, that means you are "homophobic", and the same thing with race: you don't want to have sex with a certain race, then you're racist. It's a modification of what the word means. The word doesn't imply preference, it implies hatred. And so when you throw this word racism around continually, it really begs the question: are you doing what I talked about above... do you believe racism is just this amorphous thing where people just ascribe whatever definition they want to it, or do you believe that, at some point, it had a concrete definition, and then people started abusing it so that it carried the connotation THEY wanted it to carry.

There is nothing wrong with preference. Preferring blonde girls doesn't mean you hate brunette girls. I NEVER held it against any girl if she didn't like me because of my race. Funny enough, what you come to understand, is that any person that doesn't prefer certain races / cultures... often WILL have people of that race who they will be interested in, especially if they act counter to their stereotype. I have a ex friend who was black who was really good with women and used to talk about this. The woman that obviously didn't prefer black people were, with a tight game, some of the "easiest" women to get, because if you can destroy their perception of who a black person is, they will be hypnotized by you for setting yourself different from the pack. And these are the people who we call racist... people that would theoretically date people of color. Again, this is a FAR CRY from what racism has typically meant.

There's so much more to talk about on race. Again, being mixed, I have takes that I'm almost positive no one has ever heard or even CONSIDERED, because too often we get emotional, start tossing labels at each other, and don't even consider the contours of what we're actually talking about. Most people are not TRULY racist, but most people do recognize their own race and culture is different, they recognize there are things about their own culture they like and dislike (OH there are people who will NOT date within their own race but still love their people and culture. Are they racist?). We have to be a lot thicker skinned and realize not everyone is going to like us, and us them. This isn't antithetical to the idea of loving one another. We date and marry those who we think we will mesh well with, and that we have similarities that are important to us, and we're more ruthless in this than most people would care to admit (which is why we focus on lifting in RP communities).

Long story short, let's TALK. Let's explore the contours of concepts. Let's understand that when we say "racism" or "culture" or "something being biblical", we all have different ideas of what those things mean, and some of our conceptions are more in line with the actual definition of these words, and some of them are offshoot definitions of the words. We can talk about these things like MEN without trying to offend someone by labelling them as a racist and shutting the conversation down. I spend so much of my time having to tell white people to not buy into the nonsense. Each race and culture "discriminately" (rule of thumb) likes and prefers its own and they rarely want to point to the fact that as much as they think others unfairly dislike them, they in turn dish out this unfair likeness, and they (each race and culture that decrys this) cannot and will not recognize or resolve this contradiction.

And so you'll have to forgive me but the moment people start throwing around racism, I know where it's coming from and I roll my eyes.

One last thing: there's currently this asian / pacific / islander acceptance thing going on. Again, I'm surrounded with Asian people, I love everyone, I don't have a problem. But how funny is this. Most men who have done any form of game or tried to meet women will tell you that asian woman are the most xenophobic girls out there, HANDS DOWN. Asian girls will admit their families are xenophobic.

I don't believe in PUA anymore but the point stands: any PUA book written talks about the differences in races and that you may have trouble with Asian women (and Russian women but for a different reason). Asian woman gravitate towards white men, and away from asian / black men. Do we call them racist? We tend to give women a pass, and racial minorities a pass in THEIR racism, instead choosing to go disproportionately after white people because they're the clear lighting rod.So again, let's talk, WITHOUT involving emotion.

Probably not? Do you realize you sound really racist? I have super-Christian friends/acquaintances in mixed-race marriages. One of them is an older third-generation Korean-American (in his 50s or 60s), and he’s married to a white woman (been so for decades, and they raised a bunch of ultra-Christian kids as well). He was born and raised in the US. (His grandparents moved to the US when segregation used to exist.)

So, anyways, according to you (and I’m quoting you here) he would have: (a) “cultural” incompatibilities, (b) genetic issues, (c) familial issues, and (d) social problems.

First off, three of the things you mentioned: “cultural”, “familial” and “social considerations” — all seem to be pointing to racism. Different forms of racism are probably what you’re referring to by these 3 words.

In terms of “social considerations”, unless you live in an extremely racist area, there are no “social” norms being broken.

And “family” issues come into play, um... when the family are racist.

In terms of “cultural” issues for someone who’s third-generation and US-born, I wonder what exactly that entails (besides not being white, and that counting as a bad thing?). I wonder if you would say the same thing to a second-generation American family with of say Armenian or Azerbaijanian origin. I say that because Armenian or Azerbaijanian people look white, but Armenian and Azerbaijan (and Georgia) are geographically the farthest from Europe. I’m going to wager a guess that their white skin makes all these problems you’ve cited disappear.

Lastly, in terms of “genetics”, offspring of genetically diverse parents are healthier and fitter. This is an extremely well-established biological fact.

I’d disagree with you here @arjungmenon.

Although worded quite abrasively, I agree with Osmium. I’m an African male myself and my ex girlfriend was white Australian. Although we both were not believers at the time, the cultural differences were enourmous whilst dating. In my culture, we are very community focused. Relatives call/pop in unannounced and are welcome anytime. We are very blunt people and will say things as they are - not out of rudeness, but we just see no point in beating around the bush. For my ex however, things like popping up unannounced and being blunt were seen as selfish and inconsiderate acts. She’s not right and she’s not wrong. Merely just a differing opinion.

I agree with you saying that it’s not impossible for interracial marriages to work. In fact, I endorse them as they seriously challenge us as Christians to love unconditionally as Christ loved us. But to call someone a racist if they state that there are cultural and genetic differences that would cause marital issues, is frankly quite naive. Once you’ve experienced it personally, I think you’ll be more receptive of Osmiums standpoint.

I disagree with you.

This discussion isn’t about intercultural marriage, it’s about interracial marriage.

I’m talking about two Americans of similar culture, who belong to different races. Two Americans of different races from fairly wealthy upper middle class educated families in Cambridge, MA or Menlo Park, CA, will have more in common with each other, than with an American of the same race who is for instance from the deep rural South.

You’re mixing race and culture, when the OP asked specifically about race. They’re emphatically distinct things. Also, in your personal life anecdote, you’re bringing up a cultural issue, and not even a particularly major one. (And it’s one that could be sorted out with frank conversation, and with some give-and-take.) That’s not even what I’m talking about.

This conversation has gotten pointless, and I’ve made myself clear to an ad nauseum degree, and so I’m bowing out of this discussion.

My point stands. Couple of things:

You can disagree with someone without calling them racist. You have to understand: conversations are at their best a chance to share information and positively impact people. At their worst, they are a vehicle to show hatred and exert dominance over one another. The moment you call someone a racist, the conversation is basically over. Devils advocate: How many “racist” do you know, that, when called a racist, go “you know what... you’re RIGHT, THANK YOU” and change their perspective? Doesn’t happen. It may feel “good” and “just” to call someone a racist but it shows you don’t have the other person in mind, and your goal isn’t to share information, potentially change your position, and make a positive impact (again, the ideal of conversation) but your goal is to dominate the other person.
Saying “you sound really racist” is not some better option dude 🙂 if I say to my boss after he says something: “dude you sound like a woman beater” and he goes to fire me, my response shouldn’t be “dude I didn’t say you WERE a woman beater, I just said you SOUNDED like one.... I was just gently pointing out what *sounds* like woman beating”. You can think “you sound like an idiot” is not name calling, and is TOTALLY different from “you are an idiot” but methinks you’re not really putting 2 and 2 together.

Ephesians 5:22–24 (ESV): 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Between man and wife, this is a clear cut example that shows the Bible is not egalitarian. Submission of one gender to another is not egalitarian, and this is the repeated stance of the Bible (and I can go further if you want on how this even applies to the Holy Trinity)

So let me define this word for you really quick:

Complementarianism is a theological view in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, that men and women have different but complementary roles and responsibilities in marriage, family life, and religious leadership.

A quick google will tell you that complementarianism is the opposite and antithetical to egalitarianism. There is a reason is why secular wives do not submit to their husbands; they are egalitarians, this is very simple stuff my friend. So when you say "the Bible is egalitarian" it's clear that you're not really understanding the meaning of these words you're throwing around.

err... the point was to disprove egalitarianism by focusing on a very simple point, and then talking about the fact that women and men are not equal but complement each other (hinted at in 2:18 & 3:16 which is sidebar'd). If he's not going to understand that, he's definitely not going to understand a theological position that starts with "imagine 2 dimensional object looking at a 3 dimensional object". I didn't really claim the Bible was complementarian but I think the example I brought up is a good example of something complementarian that invalidates his "it's egalitarian" point. I don't really have a horse in the race in what philosophy encompasses all that is in the Bible, I just know what it's not, especially knowing we're in a Red Pill subreddit of all places.

When you say it is "Compatibilism"... from what I read on google about, I don't really disagree with that notion, but why do you say it's not complementarianism? I just quickly found that, but the idea is that woman and man complement each other but have different roles, and I'm not really sure how

But to clarify, in this context, I took the term "egalitarian" to refer to the idea that every person is created in the image of God -- as well as in a Thomas Jefferson + Abraham Lincoln understanding of it.

Here, I'm referring to the idea that Thomas Jefferson enumerated in the Declaration of Independence of "all men being created equal". Which Abe Lincoln attempted to make a reality. (But failed.)

The larger context of this thread was racism; and whether racism was biblical, the user above responded about "Jews and IQ", that the Bible is not "egalitarian", and that not all people are "created equal" (contradicting Thomas Jefferson and the Decl. of Independence).

Of course, the idea that some races are inferior, other races are superior, from God's perspective, and somehow believing that this nonsense is biblical, is ludicrous and horrendously offensive beyond words.

I admit / I'm well aware that it's un-Christian. But I unfortunately struggle a lot with not hating Christians who also identify as "American-conservative", a political belief system that's heavily associated with racism, treating many minority groups with contempt. Essentially, I would claim that American-conservative-Christians are about as Christians as generations that God dealt with in the OT for their unfaithfulness.

Which Malachi 3:5 talks about:

“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the Lord Almighty.

Which is a group that American-conservative-"Christians" (i put Christian in quotes because it's questionable that they are even Christians at all) fall squarely into. Conservative Christians disgust me, and want to make me throw up.

It doesn’t sound like you struggle with it, it sounds like you’ve made a choice and are mentally shifting the blame of why you hate them back onto them. Re-read this sentence and tell me you’re not shifting the blame back onto the group in question. Basically your stance is “...well unfortunately their scum, so therefore. I hate”, though I do at least give you props to recognize it’s wrong.

The explanation of conversatives being racist is entirely superfluous: there are all manner of groups correlated with evil in the world, and we can surmise that an individual different from you could “unfortunately struggle with not hating” (abortion clinic doctor who has killed and extracted thousands of babies me thinks is worst than any “racist” but to each his own). The fact that you think an explanation on conservatives being racist is applicable means that you’re not looking at the big picture here and are drowning in a politicized modern world.

We’re not asked: “don’t hate people as long as you like them”.

Let’s assume that guy is legitimately is racist (he’s not, but let’s just pretend for a second). His parents could have beaten and brainwashed him into being racist. You don’t know people or what they’ve went through.

Distance the act, from the person. You love the person, but hate the actions. Say that, that’s ok to say. That should be how you think too. Love and empathize with the person in my head, but they are doing something wrong.

You should read C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. In particular, read book 3 chapter 8 of (called "The Great Sin"), which is on the sin of pride. If you have never read Mere Christianity, I'm happy to order it for you.

No one here has actually been able to defend racism, with an actual biblical argument (that supports being a racist, in your relations with other people). Other than that reference Israel being a chosen people; but that's no argument.

Paul rebukes Peter for being racist against non-Jewish people. The biblical evidence is exactly to the contrary to what's been presented here.

I can't believe I need to show that racism is unbliblical here.

There’s nothing prideful about thinking someone is wrong. If I told someone else they were wrong because they believe in abortion, then we’d be on the same page. It’s not me telling you wrong that is the issue, you‘re taking umbrage on what I’m telling you that you’re wrong on, which has nothing to do with pride, but has to do with the topic itself. This is again one of those things where you’re misinterpreting what the core of your issue is.

One of the downfalls in a debate of switching tracks and citing another persons pride, is that by the same criteria I easily turn it around: it’s quite prideful to give someone a book and tell them to read the part on pride.

The kicker of all of this? I own the book and read the whole thing. I don’t disagree with the book, I disagree with the misapplication of it. I’m thoroughly going through your points and dismantling them: focus on that

I have super-Christian friends/acquaintances in mixed-race marriages. One of them is an older third-generation Korean-American (in his 50s or 60s), and he’s married to a white woman (been so for decades, and they raised a bunch of ultra-Christian kids as well). He was born and raised in the US. (His grandparents moved to the US when segregation used to exist.)

This is a great story, but you can't just speak from your own experience, that's not how this works. The divorce rate of interracial couples is higher. This is what happens when you focus your argument on emotion and trying to call someone a racist rather than seeking out statistics, and being around enough interracial children (myself included) to know that this is fairly common. Rule of thumb is ALWAYS at play, regardless of anecdotes. Just because you ride on a bike all the time without a helmet and are fine, doesn't invalidate that the whole would do better to wear them.
