I read and loved this article yesterday: Social Media Isn’t The Reason You Feel Inadequate. You Are.

A few highlights:

It’s certainly not difficult to point a finger at social media — or pop culture for that matter — for our “unrealistic expectations” about literally everything. But the truth is that Instagram hasn’t given us false expectations any more than Sex and the City wrongly prepared us for adult life. The only ones we can really blame for those feelings are ourselves.

BAM!

As adults, we should be able to discern between truth and fiction, and we should be able to take everything we see on social media with a grain of salt.

BAM!

So it’s up to us to be able to differentiate between fantasy and reality, to take charge of our lives, and stop blaming each and every mistake or “unrealistic expectation” on something that we saw online. We need to do a better job of being an advocate for ourselves, and force ourselves to remember the things we already know.

My alumni association called. I knew it was a fund drive thing, but I felt like humoring the caller who was so perky and "on script."

Her: "I see you got your masters in library science. How exciting! Are you working on your field?"

Me: "No."

Her: "What kind of work do you do?"

Me: "I'm a stay-at-home wife."

Her: "Oh! Great! (Shuffling of papers heard) That's, um, great! Are you traveling or taking it easy?"

Hahaha it was like I had said, "Yeah, I held up a bank and got send to the penn, but my lawyer says maybe 10 years with good behavior."

I am voluntarily unemployed. That's a good thing. Yeah, I have a degree that will allow me to work, but we have structured our lives to rely on one income. Some day, it may be me who works after he retires from the military. (I paid for my school with my income while I was working, so it's not like I have student debt.)

I thought the whole "relaxing or traveling" question was hilarious!

So I'm hosting my annual cookie exchange this weekend - super excited. I'm making my traditional Cranberry Orange Cookies I found these when I was looking for holiday cookies that weren't chocolaty because my husband doesn't really get into sweets like I do and I wanted something he might enjoy. He loved them so I made them for my first exchange party and now I make them yearly.

I'm also going to make a second cookie, just not sure what yet.

Additionally the first two years I had a hot chocolate bar, which people liked but no one really partook in the spiking (I had lots of little bottles of liquors) because the party is short and my friends all live about 45-60minutes away by car. So this year I'm thinking of making festive mock-tails instead.

Option 1: Cranberry-Apple Cider Punch

I'm not sold on either so please feel free to tell me which one you'd rather I try and i'll report back :) I have a pretty punch bowl that I've not yet used as a punch bowl from our stack of wedding gifts :)

So for those of you who have never had/done/been to a cookie exchange it's quite simple, send out invites to all your girl friends who love to bake with a strict RSVP of a few days before the party. Everyone picks 1 type of cookie and bakes 1/2doz for each guest. So my party will have 8 people so each girl brings 7 bags (doesn't bring one for herself but if there are extras you can just set them on the table to snack) and gives one to each girl. Then she leaves the party with 7 bags of all the other girls cookies. I host on Sunday afternoon and serve refreshments but nothing too fancy. Cheese and crackers, something savory to balance all the treats. And we play some games that we've made up through the last few years - one is a card game a girl taught all of us she calls sixes and another is a charades type game. It's a light hearted day and an easy holiday party to throw because you don't have to do a ton of work.

The first year I baked 4 different kinds of cookies and really over did myself - I don't do that now, I just bake 2 types, a drink, and a small spread of food for snacking.

Plus - who doesn't love an excuse to ask their husband to help them deep clean the house ;) haha.
