No. You can't. RP is about personal relationships, not working relationships. In a "not ladylike" field, you definitely don't want to mess up your professional reputation by appearing meek and adorable. You can dress feminine, but that's as far as I'd recommend going. I'm in an extremely liberal field and I never mention that my husband is the head of our household. It's just asking for confrontation.

I can only speak to the business sector, but in my experience, no, it does not work. What does work, is the understanding of working in a male environment and how being female will disturb the ole boys club, and how to circumvent this. As someone who has been sitting in executive boardrooms since the beginning of her career, here’s stuff I’ve noticed.

The most successful women I’ve seen in positions of power STFU, make sure they know everything and ask lots and lots of carefully worded questions before ever voicing an opinion, and they pose their decisions in a way that makes men in the office feel that they’re the ones making the decision. In other words, they make their male coworkers feel like they’re driving and she suggests courses of action in a way that doesn’t challenge men personally and are results-driven. I see these women and I observe carefully and take notes.

They have a very innocent, quiet, calm, and pleasant demeanor. They don’t dress sexually. They don’t act sexually. They don’t even really wear the most feminine clothes either, but their appearance is pleasant. Their makeup, if any, isn’t attention grabbing. Other women don’t perceive them as a threat, but rather someone who is just there. These women are directors, VPs, I’ve even seen a couple chief executive women. They all followed this pattern, and they all had this magical ability to seem invisible, say one or two things in a very non-confrontational matter, and then slink back to invisibleness while they watch the men duke it out.

I’m still trying to figure out how they do it, but here’s stuff I’ve incorporated into my career that has gained me leaps and bounds:

You can get a lot done by STFU and timing questions appropriately, namely, write questions down, see what you can find on your own, and then ask them to a mentor in your company.

If you are not in a place of authority, or you’re in a room full of people much higher up the ladder than you, don’t directly challenge anyone in the room. Instead, find ways to nonverbally show that you’re thinking about what this coworker is saying. This could be as simple as scribbling out some quick math on printed slides of a presentation or notebook. Simply write down notes to ask about later. In the board room, I’ve used this technique before, caught my CEO’s eye, he walked over and looked at my paper, and then decided what I was writing down was interesting enough to talk to the speaker about. I was shocked when the very next time that meeting occurred, the CEO himself asked me my opinion on a related manner. This was so exciting!!!

Be careful commenting on anything a woman does. They’re more likely to take things emotionally.

Keep any and all emotional complaining and hamstering to yourself. I’ve seen so many women derail important business meetings because “moving a task to x person isn’t fair” or “doing things the current way is annoying” or “so-and-so isn’t doing their part!” As a result, I’ve had so many managers directly say things like “Stripe, I really appreciate you, you don’t cause departmental drama and I know that doing x bugs you. I’m glad that when we have our meetings that our time is productive and I never have to worry that you’re going to come to me freaking out about small things.”

That way, when you come to your boss freaking out about something big, they understand that you’re not crying about spilled milk and they’re more receptive to your concerns.

Take it from someone who has survived several mass lay-offs: when the time comes to chop heads, the higher ups are going to look at the loud boat rockers who complain the most about stuff that seems impossible to fix first.

If there’s no solution that you can provide along with your complaints and you don’t have the authority or resources to get the right people in a room to address the issue and develop a solution, stop complaining about it.

Keep that stuff quiet and work on it when you have free time or go to your boss instead and say things like “I wanted to see what you think about this side project I’ve been working on. I think that this thing I developed could cut a lot of time doing this thing (that I don’t like doing) so that we as a team can spend more time on this other company initiative instead.”

Okay, I'll bite and go against the grain. Yes, you can apply RP principles in the workplace. That doesn't mean bring meek and subservient, but it does mean keeping RP principles in mind when interacting with others.

I work in a workplace that's 90% men and most older than me. I get a lot done by the following: being personable, friendly but not flirty, asking nicely for things, being aware of male pride/face saving, not competing with men (Note that I'm not in a competitive field), dressing femininely but not distractingly, being careful to rein in my emotions/not make emotional decisions, and being clear I'm not open to sexual/flirty interactions. Most of these are standard 'professionalism' concepts, but with an underlying awareness of RP principles.

I actually started using RP in a way at work before I implemented it at home. I work in very male dominated environments and while I do have a fiery get-it-done attitude within me, I recognize that most people don’t respond well to a “bossy” sounding younger woman.

A lot of people speak out against the expectation that women be quieter, friendlier, and “nicer” at work, that there are very specific unwritten rules for being attractive but not distracting, and embracing these “hidden constraints” in order to better play “the game” at work is what I consider to be RP. I don’t fight the system, I make it work for me by using the rules as much to my advantage as possible.

For me personally I see RP as a personal relationship only kind of thing, so SO, friends and family. At work you need to get shit done and you need a get shit done attitude, which is not very feminine. I think if you take to much of a STFU approach people may take advantage of you in the office. But I haven't experimented much with this.

Great advice in this thread already but it won’t hurt to set boundaries and be clear about them in your workplace. Some of the guys joke inappropriately with some of the girls which they don’t seem to mind but I’ve made it clear that’s NOT ok with me nor when it’s about me. Same goes with “so and so would be cute together” I have a serious partner. Those jokes aren’t funny. Some of the women joke about them leaving their boyfriends so casually it’s completely disrespectful. My advice would be to stay away from it all.
