I think it’s fine to ask him for an engagement ring.

You don’t have to get a diamond, but I advise against any cheap metals or cubic zerconia. You want a stone that is durable and a metal that isn’t going to give you a rash or turn your skin green.

If I don't wear my ring, a lot more creepy guys hit on me. If you're looking for a unique perspective, letting men know you're taken is a legitimate purpose. You might consider moissanite. It's cheap and beautiful.

So I think it’s important that you guys sit down and talk finances about the wedding (even if it’s still really far out). This is the perfect time to bring up the cost of an engagement ring and wedding bands (depending on your values in many circles the bride is supposed to purchase the husband’s band).

This is my practical approach but I tend to be very strategic in how I approach the really important topics with the men in my life. If slip something like this into a bigger topic. While talking about general wedding finances this is a good time IMO. Then if he says he didn’t think you wanted a ring you can share how you would like something and explain what you had in mind price wise or design wise. If the conversation gets awkward or tense you can always change the subject to another item on the cost list (like his ring!) and go back to it later on.

This is absolutely an important conversation to have. Talk costs. What you would like to spend on certain items so you can type up a financial plan leading up to the wedding (what will get paid for, when, how, etc. This also doubles as the contribution conversation. Where you can talk about if family will help pay and how much they can contribute to the wedding.

I’ve been engaged twice and God help me the financial planning aspect was probably my strongest area lol.

Chiming in with agreement about nothing wrong with wanting a wedding ring. If you go for something other than diamonds, skip cz. I know people with moissanite, it legit looks the same, is harder, won't cloud or discolor in time. One of my friends had ring made at a jeweler, the other sent it in to James Allen who put it in one of their settings and sent her the finished ring.

Here's a redditors experience with a wholesale moissanite seller. There are big companies trying to make moissanite as big a racket as diamonds are, I'd recommend skipping them personally.

If you do end up going with diamonds, personal experience with James Allen has been very, very good. They have big sales too. Also if you go with a rose gold setting you can go way down in color and save money and it looks the same because of the metal color reflecting off the diamond. Like I-K color and you're good still.

On a personal note, I heartily agree with all the reasons you want one. It is a marital symbol whether anyone likes it or not. Even a plain band says it all while still looking pretty. It's worth bringing up and you've gotten good advice on how to already, I hope it all works out!

Tell him that you understand that a ring is not important to him, but you would like one to signify to the world that you are promised to him, and to keep other men away. Tell him you don't want a flashy ring or a diamond, but something classy, feminine and subtle and are happy to pay for it yourself but would like his approval after you have picked it out and are ready to buy it. Go and buy yourself a cheap ring and wear it on your ring finger. Objects only become "symbols" when we assign meaning to them. So all you need is to obtain an object and assign a meaning to it.
