I think religion accounts for some of these sentiments. There are plenty of women of faith here who believe men and women should wait for marriage or at least be sexually conservative, so that would explain the “Men that sleep around are disgusting” comments.

I would argue the change in preferences may be due to insecurities... same reason why some BS articles came out years ago saying that women preferred dad bods.

Why did they prefer them? Because there is less competition and less anxiety over losing a mate to a better option.

Except that most of the women who said this, in this flawed survey, thought a dad bod meant "10lbs away from a 6-pack", not a hairy beer gut that hangs over his belt.

Just hypothesizing here.

I think technology also plays a huge role. We shifted from tribal and agricultural societies to technologically advanced societies with an information and knowledge economy. Alpha traits become less relevant to who looks good on paper when your prosperity relies less on who can protect you from mother nature and more on who can successfully navigate an increasingly digitized world. I’d argue that greater betas or those with an even mix of alpha and beta traits do better in the latter scenario than pure alphas do.

I’ve also thought that the shift towards nuclear families has made most women dislike men with high risks of infidelity. The optimal reproductive strategy in this day and age requires HEAVY paternal investment in their children. Many parents care for their children well into their college years, funding their education even as they become adults to give them the best base to build their futures on. Compare that to children from single parent households who are more likely to to use drugs, be gang members, be expelled from school, be committed to reform institutions, and become juvenile murderers.. Coupling with men who are more prone to infidelity or have a strong desire for sexual variety puts higher risks for instability for your children, and I think you’re right that we are starting to evolve away from that.

Still, I think women still have an innate attraction towards men with alpha traits (why AFBB is still such a prevalent thing), but they either 1) deny themselves these men as a self-protection measure 2) have “fun” with these men with no intention of settling down with them, or 3) find a man who has the good alpha and beta traits as the best risk-to-reward option (this is the RPW way!). I think age is also a factor: most teenage/early twenties women prefer skinny men with pretty, high trust faces because they have the least experience and confidence in their skills to “keep” a man and are more likely to play it safe as they first dip their toes in the dating pool. However, as women grow older and are able to be more strategic in their love lives, they start to prefer more masculine men with stronger builds and more overall alpha traits because they are less afraid of them.

I have two gen z daughters and 3 gen z nieces so I feel like I know girls that age pretty well.

I know this is controversial but my theory is that many young women retrofit what they say they want based on what they can land. For ex, my nieces, all three of them came out as bi/them in hs. I've watched them grow up and not once did they ever shown preference for boy hobbies. They danced, made art, played house, baked and cooked and wore girly dresses. I see the same with some childhood friends of my daughters. They had all these boy crushes growing up and then suddenly were lesbians in college.

It is, after all, a time-honored coping strategy to hate on what you can't have. If you can't land an alpha, it must mean that you prefer a beta.

I just don't think we're as animalistic as this theory suggests. There are so many nurture elements that override the nature elements determining what attracts us. For instance, a woman who grew up with an overbearing, abusive alpha for a father is likely to prefer a softer presence in a man's personality and physical appearance. Meanwhile, a woman with a traditional leader for a father, who is both loving and hardworking, probably prefers someone who's similarly alpha himself. Likewise, if a woman's dated a cheater or a man with a porn addiction, she's likely to take greater issue with another's sexual history. That goes for the religious, as well.

Culture makes a big difference, too. I live in the South and used to joke that a real man drives a truck, must be a better shot than I am, and owns more guns. My husband fulfills all of these requirements. He also fits the more traditional alpha stereotype to a tee, despite the fact that I was highly educated and worked in a very liberal environment when we met. It's an interesting theory you pose, but we're not animals, so I don't think it holds much merit.

There’s a lot of “think as you want but act as others going on, but I can tell you - admittedly purely anecdotally - that what men and women express to me privately is a lot closer to the savanna than one would think.

I just had a girl boomerang back to me who had set herself up to be the wife of a successful man, simply by following her own interests: she kept her figure right, tight, and in the light, was skilled in the feminine arts (good cook and hostess) and was uni educated, but in art history, which, in a world dominated by finance and tech, is a highly ornamental degree if also an excellent one for making polite conversation at cocktail parties.

Having figured out nearly immediately after graduation, and that art history wasn’t going to support her, she learned how to code. Well, she made decent money doing it, she also hated it, hence her text appearing on my phone. Men and women are designed to handle different types of stress.

Now could she easily find herself a Prakash or an Ahmet? 100%. And that t guy would think he was the luckiest guy in the world to have landed her. But she’s not going go that route bc her firmware is telling her to go get herself an alpha bux.

Anyway, YMMV. This is just how I see it from my perch in the world.

I don't think macro evolution moves that fast for R and K selection behaviors and traits that it would change what women find sexually attractive (primal attraction). Mystery (Erik von Markovik) wrote about how value can be distilled down to:

V (value) = S+R
where S+R = Survival and Replication

In essence, womens attraction is determined by their value judging system of men's perceived survival and replication value (ignoring personality, preference, culture, etc.). E.g. higher relative height, broader shoulders, intelligence, ability to accomplish goals, resources, etc. And so when men DHV (demonstrate higher value) according to old school pick up, they would be communicating through their behaviors, body language, voice tone, stories, social proof, pre-selection, etc. their survival and replication values that would typically spark attraction in the women they meet.

Instead, what we're likely seeing in society is the 'paper rock scissors' side-blotched lizards sexual strategy games that adjust according to environment level changes. High conflict lower stability environments favor more hard alpha and machievellian behaviors/traits while low (physical) conflict high stability environments favor greater beta and soft alpha behaviors/traits.

I wasn’t attracted to muscly men until I dated one. He was the shortest, but stockiest and biggest guy I ever dated, my other boyfriend’s had all been tall and lanky, but athletic. I definitely had a visceral attraction to him that was different from the other ones. I was attracted to him, but the first time we were physical it was like “wow this is a MAN!” and the attraction went up a lot more.

I feel like my attraction to guys when I was younger was more aesthetic and emotional, and with this last guy it was more physical and primal.

Full text: I was watching this video by Prof Edward Dutton (The Jolly Heretic) and he highlighted an article by Peter Frost, a Canadian anthropologist, that argued evolution continued and accelerated outside of the hunter-gatherer environment.

At the various RP subs we spend a lot of time reading, talking about, and theorising over various conclusions from evolutionary psychology. It's even in the sidebar:

All theories and conversations spring from a traditional, evolutionary psychology, or anti-feminist foundation.

Surely the move from caveman-appeal (strength, aggression) to city-dweller-appeal (social tact, intelligence) would have a huge effect on mate preferences and hence any resulting evolutionary psychology theories? The first thing that springs to mind is the Alpha Fucks/Beta Bucks dichotomy - where it is assumed that women are simply not sexually interested in anything but the top 20% of men, and moreover, a specific type of man (the caveman appeal). But from reading the variety of women's preferences here, I've seen many statements, such as (paraphrasing):

"I am intimidated by muscly men and prefer a skinnier build on a man"
"I prefer a greater beta to an alpha"
"I think men that sleep around are disgusting"

All of which show a preference for Beta traits... Could this be explained by the move from nomadic tribes to cities? Would like to hear your thoughts. Are there any other theories that could be challenged?
