Hi, professional housekeeper here. Here are some basics that you should know. Every day, you should make your bed, do your dishes, and wipe down your kitchen and bathroom counters. This will keep dishes from becoming overwhelming, a made bed pulls an otherwise "meh" room together, and keeping counters clean makes sure your spaces look polished. All of that should take a half an hour or less. Weekly, pick up your outdoor space (if you have it) vacuum/sweep/mop your floors, wipe down your toilet, wipe all mirrors, wipe out your tub with a brillo pad + comet or barkeepers friend (i prefer the latter), and do your laundry (including bedding). Monthly, check ceilings for cobwebs, dust off your baseboards, empty and clean out your fridge, dust off items that you do not move often, wipe out your oven and microwave, deep clean your car, and shampoo your carpet if you have it. As far as products, your best friends are gonna be Barkeeper's Friend, brillo pads, white erase, and Mr. Clean all purpose cleaner. And paper towels. Do not use rags, they only spread the dirt around. There are other more specific cleaners, but those basic items will do most things. For doing laundry, invest in a good detergent and some Borax. The cheap ones don't do as well. Get dryer sheets. Check the tags on your clothing and look at the symbols and they will tell you which settings you need to wash them on. For what it's worth, me and almost every guy I know (especially the more dominant hvm) would put cooking skills as the absolute second highest home making skill...(taking care of kids is #1) HVM can usually afford to pay someone to clean the house also cleaning doesn't envoke the same enjoyment and feeling of love that comes from a good home cooked meal.

I've always enjoyed cooking/baking but really got into it in high school when I decided I wanted to learn to bake cakes from scratch. Once I nailed that down I was interested in making bread, which is now something I do weekly. It might be good to pick a few things you actually like to eat and start by learning how to cook those. You can start with simple things like stews, mac and cheese from scratch, a basic chocolate cake, MUFFINS (I love making muffins for breakfast), good scrambled eggs, stir-fry, and move on from there. Search for food blogs or Youtube channels - they can serve as inspiration as well as a source of recipes. Even though I use the Internet to find a lot of recipes I like to have a few cookbooks on hand, too. You don't have to go out and buy new cookbooks necessarily, you can usually find some good ones at thrift stores or rummage sales.

Here are the cookbooks I use:

Joy of Cooking, which is a classic and I use it for basic things like biscuits, pancakes, pies, and as a reference. There is an intro section to each of the topics covered that can be useful.

Vintage Betty Crocker cookbooks. One of these was my go-to when I was really learning to cook/bake.

Martha Stewart cake cookbook.

Peter Reinhart's breadbaking books.

Laurel's Kitchen books for healthier recipe inspiration.

Brad Leone (on YouTube) - total goof but makes cooking seem accessible

Barry Lewis (on YouTube) - another goof, I watch for his funny Kitchen Hack videos, but he does have videos showing very basic, easy recipes

Gastropod podcast - food science

You tube is amazing. Clean my space will teach you so much about the how. There will be a million different people to follow that could teach you how to cook too. On reddit I follow homemaking and I follow cleaning tips. Following threads like this will help you get the ideas in your headline by bit. Frugal and some other finance pages will be useful too. Budgeting is a big part of running a home.

More practically I would start by learning to cook things you already like. Crumbed chicken, macaroni and cheese and pancakes would probably well received in your home. Build from there.

I found a book called Richards Ladies Handbook in my partners grandparents house after they passed away. I think you can get a version of that on the internet pretty cheap but I’ve used it so much even though it’s from the 1940s 🤣 it has a LOT of great tips for cooking, cleaning (especially natural and cheap since this was pre-chemical craziness like we have now), how to make yourself up each day, childcare, husband, etc etc etc

Obviously not all rules apply anymore but I have honestly found it helpful and I’m not even a very “traditional” woman!

I still suck at cleaning, but I love teaching myself how to cook by finding recipes on Pinterest (I have a board for meals I want to try with subsections for breakfasts/dinners/etc). A LOT of learning how to cook is just doing it and following the instructions. Experiment, fail, adapt, and improve :)

Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson. This book breaks down the chemistry of cleaning, the pros and cons and how to care for different fabrics, what the lighting jargon is all about, etc. You need this to save time and money.
