Where is his family from? I feel like that can make a bit of a difference. It's such a huge country it could vary but that could help us narrow it down. Since you're here in this sub it could also be important information to know if they have a strong US political affiliation. My experience lately is if they are liberals/leftists/woke you need to just tow the line. Don't rock the boat. If you don't agree with something they say, just smile and nod and say wow a lot. If they are conservative you can probably just be yourself. Polite, respectful, kind, follow their lead in their home, etc, but you can be yourself.

Full text: I will be meeting my boyfriends parents and grandparents soon. He lives in the USA and I will travel to meet them there. Does anyone have any advice or tips on how meeting the parents is done in America, ie any particular customs/mannerisms I should be aware of. I’m not American, but in general, I feel like meeting the parents tends to go well if you’re polite, respectful, and offer to help where you can. They might not accept it, but it’s a gesture that’s usually well received. Compliment the things about them and the house that you genuinely enjoy, but they must be sincere - i.e. “you have a lovely home”, or “you’ve been so kind, thank you for having me in your home.”

Will you be meeting any other family, or just his parents/grandparents? At some point you should be able to show that you can stand on your own and hold conversation with others if he’s not by your side. Ask polite questions about them, and engage with them in conversation, and you should be good! Be friendly and warm, and you’ll make his family feel like he’s making the right choice in you as a partner. In this case, you are “presenting” yourself in a way, but also reflecting on him.

Personally, I think that last one is super key as the first time I met any of my boyfriend’s family, I met all of them at once (plus nearly all his coworkers!) at their family business’ Christmas party lol. So I was somewhat “thrown in the deep end”! But his family appreciated that I 1, reflected well on him/the family, and 2, that he didn’t have to hold my hand all night and I could easily chat with those I met. He could easily then do what he needed to do without worrying about me.

Also, in a lot of cases, if you can charm his mom, then you’re golden!!

depending on the country of origins, check up on the difference in mannerisms.

For example, coming from central Europe, we tend to have a smaller social bubble than Americans. Meaning we tend to be 0.5 - 1 meter away from the party we talk to; for Americans it tends to be about 1-1.5 meters (or over 3 feet if you prefer imperial). So be careful not to stand to close to people. You might see them move away.

When you eat, you use the right hand for the fork, and cut much of the food into pieces before eating with the fork in the right hand and the knife next to the plate. I believe they also tend to put their left hand off the table while eating. Often foods are also consumed by hand (which was very odd to me).

The noise levels tend to be higher. It's not an argument, that's just a way they tend to talk without meaning to be offensive. Small-talk is normal. The question "how are you" is more of a greeting, and not an actual question you answer, you just say "how are you" back with a smile.

They tend to wear shoes in the house (which is weird to other cultures) and not to walk anywhere (unless it's like New York or something). Other than that I think that most of the things will go just fine. They'll be excited to meet you and be happy. So not too many things to worry about.
