RPW, how do you plan your vacations, weekends, celebrations, and time off work for your captain?

before planning anything i would definitely check to make sure you’re on the same page about the kind of vacation you want to take - is he looking to go relax by the beach or does he want to go sightseeing and explore a new city? getting that out of the way will help guide your planning

i personally love using pinterest to plan trips and find activities to do! you can easily search things to do in your intended destination and you’ll get lots of articles written by travel bloggers with full itineraries you can follow (or you can do what i do and read dozens of them and then pick out the individual activities you like the most from each) and it’s easy to save it all to one board for your trip. travel vlogs on youtube are another great place to find ideas for where to go

as far as planning birthday dinners i would again recommend turning to pinterest or even google to find interesting and nice restaurants in your area, and then using yelp to check the reviews of any places that catch your eye! pinterest is also great for finding menu and decoration ideas if you’d prefer hosting over going out

I do all of it and put a schedule on our fridge.

I do all the vacation planning online. I use trip advisor a lot and even YouTube

Always make him involved in big picture planning! I assume you are together long enough to know what kind of places he would enjoy or not. You can propose for a couple destinations or plans that both of you might be interested, and let him to choose.

My husband can’t take off work on a whim. Even a long weekend involves weeks of planning ahead.

So for us, I identify a time frame and discuss it with him. If he’s agreeable to the timeframe, he or I will contact his schedule staff to block of dates/hours.

Then I can start to research local attractions for our destination. Look up good restaurants. Read reviews for hotels or VRBOs.

In general, I present him with a wish list and he gets veto rights to anything that doesn’t sound fun.

This is pretty much how our at home weekends go as well. This weekend included a concert, zip lining, and a boat day. It was a lot but everything was cleared with him before I booked it.

This is a great, great post. What we learned as a couple was to really understand what vacation meant to each if us. Now, everyone is different, but what I expressed to my wife was the following-

I do not have a strong preference on what we specifically do. All I want is to 1)Get away. 2) Not think. 3) Relax. So ask him for these general needs first.

He plans all of that stuff for us! I got lucky though he knows I'm terrible at it plus I don't handle any of the money so I can't really book anything etc. And I don't know when he can take time off work that's all his decision.

My husband and I work together on it, because he can't take PTO whenever. A lot of jobs in the US these days have pooled sick time and paid time off together into one group, so time he uses for appointments is the same as vacation time.

He usually picks the days and the location and I help out by researching the best places to stay, resturants and sights to see in the area (we both like doing the same things usually museums and parks). I then make reservations/buy tickets for everything if needed and make a grocery list.
