Tl;dr: If you're serious about lifting, look for guys that actually compete, look at their history and their achievements. Ring them and ask them to be your lifting mentor.

Don't trust personal trainers.

Anyone who calls themselves a 'fitness' enthusiast with some spare funds lying around can go out and get a degree that qualifies them to be a PT. I live in Australia, so I assume it isn't as bad here as it would be somewhere like the US.

Long story short: I injured my self twice in under the watch of two different PT's at two different gyms (over the past year and a half). I'm not saying it's their fault. I'm the dumbass that let my ego dictate over common sense, but I put my trust in them, as the apparent 'experts' and they said nothing, even though the weight I was doing was unreasonable for my condition. Especially my latest injury. I informed my PT that I was rehabilitating, later he suggested going up to a 60kg squat, which is when I injured myself (Yes I know it's not that much weight, but I was rehabilitating).

After a rest period, I am now seeing a strength coach with his own business running a gym in his garage. He's worked with Mark Rippetoe and knows his shit.

He's given me projected results by the end of the year: You'll be lifting this much weight, you will weight this much, and you will be focusing on these areas. I pay $300 for 3 months and I can see him up to 3 times a week. That's $25 a week. My previous gyms I was paying more than double that for a PT session. Also: All you need to get really fucking strong and a good physique is a squat rack, dumbells, bench and a barbell.

I'll be honest, it took a while for me to get a hold of this guy, but it has payed off. My injury is healing really well, I'm gaining a lot of muscle and I'm lifting more weight, easier than I ever have

I have also developed a goal to compete in strongman in the near future. I've never been more excited about the gym. This guy has basically become my mentor and pushed me to aspire for goals I never thought were possible (for me). I had no idea how full of shit PT's were until I looked for the real-deal.

Despite my negative experiences, I'm interested to here other people's experiences with PT's.

Summary/Lesson learned: I dun goofed trusting PT's and after a bit of searching have found a mentor to compliment my strength goals.
