This sounds so very female; or at least your actions sound very female. It is not masculine to get involved with other men's women problems. You should have told him to sort his own shit out, pointing out that no woman should interfere with your work-you've got a job to do and you're not going to waste time on it. Essentially, it is his business. I think telling him to sort it out himself and that you were not getting involved would have been the way to do it. Have high value on friendships by all means but when it comes to women, stay the heck out of it or if you've got a real blue pill mate who goes bitching like a woman and can't just shrug his shoulders and dump her and move on without being a bitchy little pussyboy about it-as you clearly have here-I suggest you dump him as a friend as well. One more thing: just because you have known this guy all your life doesn't mean that he is a good friend. I've known members of my family all my life, doesn't mean to say they are good people! And as somebody has very astutely pointed out here: people are very quick to forget favors. Real men don't of course, but as your friend is quite clearly a beta (because if he was not he wouldn't be getting you to fire this guy-he would shrug his shoulders, dump and move on to focus on the next female or just simply dump and shrug his shoulders) I confidently predict that when the shit hits the fan for you he will not be around.

While OP's story has a counterproductive ending, I think "Beware the Vindictive Beta" is still good advice.

In college, a girl with a boyfriend kept hitting me up and flirting. I told her I'd only do anything with her if she was single because I'm not trying to get involved in a mess. She breaks up with the guy and we end up fooling around for a couple weeks.

Despite holding to my values and an attempt to avoid drama, I still got fb message/phone call death threats from the kid and his roommate for the next few months. Beware the vindictive beta
