I 100% regret all the years I spent in university and I'm just a fucking corporate pencil pusher. Medicine? Fuck that shit. Unless you LOVE science don't go into STEM because it is all struggle and debt.

I wish I had become an electrician or a carpenter. I would have had a lot more time to pursue all the skills I am only learning now and these are the sorts of works you can go and perform anywhere and which do not require a live corporate hivemind to give you employment. You also need tops a 1 year course rather than 4 years+.

I almost joined the army myself, but there is no point in doing so today. You'll get raped and face death so you can murder some foreigners for the rich elite. If you come home, you'll face the struggle of your experiences and still be in the same shit culture that hates us. It's a fucking cliche now for army wives to fuck over their husbands. There is literally no upside to this. If you want the skills, join the scouts or the cadets. Go hunting. Take first aid. And don't listen to army recruiters about what the army is like. They're trying to sell you a product. It's like going to the car salesman for advice on buying cars.

This isn't WWII. We aren't fighting Nazis. A lot of idiots will try to convince you that we are, but the reality is that there are two fucking oceans between us and them and if we weren't attacking them for the last 70 years they wouldn't be our fucking problem. We are the Nazis now.

Finance, accounting, etc. is definitely superior to anything else you mentioned as it doesn't have all the agonizing cons and dangers, and is reasonably rewarding money-wise, but it will still put you in university for 3-6 years depending on the degree you get. I did that and I regret it even though the money I make now is good enough. I'd be making the same money if I was a handyman and I never learned a thing in university either. Everything useful about business I know is from life, the internet is a big help, and literally nothing good came from university except for a piece of paper that says I have a fucking meaningless degree.

Hey, this is somewhat right up my alley. Finding the right career path boils down to 3 main points.

Your goals in life: Do you want money? Do you want fame? Do you want power? Do you want to change lives? - Don't be embarrassed to say that you want to make a lot of money if that's what you want. But whatever it is, you need to be honest with yourself.
Your talents: Do you find that you excel in any particular fields? Are you good with anatomy? Are you a good analyst? Do you have an aptitude for safety and security? Etc Etc
What do you like to do and enjoy doing? Do you like fixing? Do you like people? Do you like being tucked away into an office and just crunching numbers? Are you social? Are you anti-social? Do you like space? Etc

Think about these questions very well, and when you have the answers - and you've got to be honest with yourself and open to changing your own mind, I can help you narrow down a career path even further.

If a steady life is what you're after, then medicine is a good choice. It is like the experiment in which they ask children if they wanted a cookie now, or ten cookies in half an hour. Medicine is a decade of studying for a lifetime of increased social status and cash.

As others have said, this question probably doesn't belong here, it belongs to AskTRP. Having said that, my advice is contained in this quite recent comment. TL;DR: if you're smart, work hard, study math/CS and do summer internships, that will ensure you have a good career (possibly in finance), even as a backup if you want to try entrepreneurship first.

Also, given that you're in Europe, try to get extra experience with an Erasmus exchange.

You might as well get the 4 years over with now rather than later. I'm 25 going on 26 next month and I'm a sophomore in college (even though I got my associate's degree all ready). I am seriously kicking myself for not getting this done when I was younger because I'm at a stage in my life where I just want to WORK. I know I have the potential to do what I'm studying out in the real world right now, it's just a matter of not having the credentials (IE: Bachelor's Degree). I would also like to earn my phD at some point in the future.

Anyway, forget about money. Money will come to you if you're successful and competent with whatever you chose to do with your life.. This is especially true if you're able to get into a top tier school or close to it, which will open up a lot of networking connections for you. If you're in a major city too, you're golden.

Sure some careers pay more than others. A welder can earn just as much money as a doctor yet the welder doesn't have to go to school for 12 years and invest x amount of money for tuition.. But when it comes down to the reality of things; what would you rather do?.

Might get down voted for this, but money really isn't everything. As long as you can live comfortably and afford to do the things that make you happy then so what? The western world right now is falling apart and I think a lot of people are taking on the danse macabre mindset.

So essentially tl;dr: get college over with NOW. You might regret not doing it when you're older and may not be in a position to complete it (kids, financial position, demanding job, etc..) Also, study whatever it is you're passionate about. If you have an above dog shit work ethic (which is very rare in US schools these days) you will probably be successful with what you do.

I'm in the exact same situation as yourself. I was planning on doing one degree, then couldn't decide between other degrees as I was about to go to university. So I deferred for a year and took a gap year. I have learnt more about the world while traveling it (how people work, the social division) , and now have a much better understanding on what I want to study. Take your time most people are considered adolescents till the age of 25 in the western world.

If you choose the medicine path, you should think of it as your life long career and passion. The other things you mentioned are flexible and allow you to change jobs and work different paths until you figure out what's best for you. Only if you're certain that you want to dedicate your life to medicine should you choose it. Medicine is not a job or a business -- it is a calling.

Choose a career that:

1a. You are very passionate about and love the work OR

1b. Pays very well and doesn't suck out your soul AND

Aligns somewhat with your natural skills and talents (e.g., if you have cerebral palsy, don't decide to become a brain surgeon)

If you're good with math and have basic computer skills, computer science and computer engineering may be potential career paths. The job is typically interesting, pays well, and can lead to managerial roles if you want. Cons: There are long hours when a deadline is approaching.

I would get a degree in something that allows easy and fast money (like sw developer) compared to a medic where you have to wait about 8 year until the real money starts coming in. That way you always have to fall back to while pursuing your passions.

Edit: your degree is worth more as a "he can keep and job and won't get in trouble" than as a reflection of your knowledge and capabilities. I studied electronics and worked as a SW developer (now back in school). Also , university is good for networking, not only with students but this staff.

Do some crunches, and model. Start a YouTube channel, with funny content. Accumulate "followers" via the popular social media channels. Monetize.

Thoroughly analyze and research industry trends. Then determine which skills and investment you need to acquire the position you desire.

Be wary of choosing a profession that includes physical labor (electrician/ carpenter/ bricklayer/ etc) as they pay very well, but are hard on your body and will eventually result in you having to switch careers once you can't do them any more (unless you play for this and switch from a doer to a business owner/ teacher type roll).

You need to go into what you are passionate about. If you love crunching numbers and working on spreadsheets go into finance.. you will always find ways to branch out in finance/ business (if you can get past the cubicle life).

Put together your studies in what you like: biology, chemistry, military (strategy perhaps), finances, management and whatever else you might like.
Study what's out there, see what lacks.
Ponder on all your studies.

and then

1+2+3 = create a monopoly and enjoy your mental sweats.

And to whomever may consider to ask "how" to do it, the answer has been already written.
