Humankind is Devolving

Here's something I was thinking about recently, which I'd like to hear your thoughts on.

Humankind is devolving. In the past, it was survival of the fittest. In general, humanity became stronger with each generation as the strongest and smartest bred while the rest died or failed to mate.

Today, everything's changing. Consider career women. Women pursue a degree in law, medicine, or science are generally smarter than average. Yeah, there are some gender-science quota spots, but I'm looking at the big picture. So all these girls who have great genes also get solid jobs. But then they want to succeed, so once they enter the workforce at 25 they focus on work until they're 30 to establish a good position. Great, if they were a guy that would be a solid career path.

However, their genetic clock is ticking, and now they want a husband. Keep in mind, these women need someone of higher status than them. Hence, the hunt for a husband is long, and maybe they finally get married and have kids at 35. 35! This woman with excellent genes has squandered not only her own potential, but also her husband's (a man who is likely even more successful) by waiting so long to have kids. The children may not have any health issues, but they certainly won't be as smart or healthy as they could have been had they been born earlier.

Now, consider the other side of the coin. Women with poor genes: fat, ugly, dumb, whatever you want. They don't go to school, instead getting a small job and a beta-bucks husband. And they have kids earlier. Kids at 20? Sure, there's no 8-year doctorate program to hold things up. And if they're on welfare, the more kids the better thanks to child credits.

So what do we have? Successful, smart people either not having kids, or waiting until they're past their prime. Below average people end up passing their genes on more, and exceptional people's genes regress to mediocrity.

This is the opposite of evolution. Instead of humanity growing stronger with each generation, we retrace our steps -back towards our ancestry of unthinking apes.

EDIT: Lot's of discussion going on, which is great. Sometimes you have to kick the hornet's nest to get some skin in the game. I realize that I should have been a little more definitive in the original post though - yes, I know that survival of the fittest is not literal, and there are more qualities than intelligence. And while humankind is still a biologically successful species if people are reproducing, I'm referring to a devolution in that characteristics of power (intelligence, strength, health, etc.) are being lost. Sure, we'll still be a species for a long time, and we're not going to become blobs overnight, but we're advancing at a slower rate, if at all.
