As a "financial adviser" I can completely understand this wage gap.

I do a lot of training of financial reps all across the country. I train financial reps from beginners all the way up to the top 1/10 of 1% of financial professionals. As I stand in front of groups of financial professionals, one thing is very, very clear.....the financial business is a man's game.

The women, especially the young women, really struggle.

I will see more young women and as they skill level (and experience) of the group gets "older", you will notice fewer and fewer females in the room.

The women that are able to make it in the business (i.e. stay in the game for longer than 10 years....preferably 20 years) and are over the age of 50 are stone cold killers. They can sell! They know how to handle themselves in the financial arena.

But they are so very few and far between.

There was a story on the FT yesterday (I think?) about there not being enough women in managerial roles in the finance role. The story went sort of like "okay, we now have more women than men in junior roles, why aren't there more women in senior roles?" Glanced over the fact that junior roles are now tilted the other way, because that is okay, now we need to make sure we have tilted the balance the other way everywhere else as well.

We know it was never about equality, it's just now becoming a little pathetic how transparent they allow themselves to be in their bias.

Personal financial advisors is a very broad category. Within Financial Specialists it is among the widest groups. It includes private wealth advisors (managing multi-million dollar portfolios) to those in retail branches (managing multi-dollar portfolios). It might go as low as tellers on the bottom end.

This occupational grouping is not granular enough to make any conclusions on pay disparity for equal work; the work isn't equal.

A commission based environment is about as fair as you can get with regards to compensation.

This depends on how you define "fair". In my world (computer programming), I'm judged less on my sales skills and everyone on my team gets paid the same base salary, and we know who gets monthly bonuses (because management singles them out publicly).

I don't have the personality to do a sales job. That said, I'm interested in learning from someone more experienced. So, does anyone have space in their lives for a mentee? Thanks!

They try to spin it as the extra days that women have to work to earn the same as men from last year - but amusingly it also represents effectively the first day they show up to work this year compared to men. Today is the annual-scale version of when she moseys into the office of her secretarial job holding a Starbucks at 11am having had an extra hour or two in bed, taken the kids to school and gone for brunch with a girlfriend; while her husband has been out at the office hustling his big corporate overseas clients since 8.30.

If she wants to make the same as him, yeah, she'll probably have to work late.
