Reading between the lines of your post lies an interesting point. The rewards of lifting are the opposite of instant gratification. For me, and many others, the true joy in lifting is the results, and results take time. The kind of person who only appreciates instant gratification won't have the patience for body transformation. I wonder if there's any correlation between lifting the infamous "marshmallow test" given to kids to see how they are able to process delayed gratification?

The best part I find about lifting? That feeling you have where your body feels heavy.

It slows down your movement, you aren't as jumpy... Basically alpha male qualities in body language, and you can't help it, because your body is just worn from the lift.

If nothing else, why wouldn't you want that?

I've been lifting for about 7 years seriously and consistently, although I messed around a bit in school before then (I'm early 30s now). Here's my before/after 2007-2015: http://i.imgur.com/NZCXe73.jpg

Lifting changed me completely, almost unrecognisably. It changed my self-image, how other people treated me, how my family acted towards me (no longer was I the depressed pity case but the fit inspiration for them to change also), and even my political views evolved.

Getting into the fitness lifestyle also opened up other avenues of self improvement. I started wearing better clothes because I no longer felt self-conscious about what I wore. I look after my skin now, take better care of my teeth, got rid of the shaggy hairstyle and shaved my head. Getting lean made my face more attractive, I probably went up 2 points just from that. I actually had a spree of tinder plating over a period of 2 years when I was almost completely broke and car-less, purely down to my looks, which was unimaginable a few years ago. I had married female friends on facebook start flirting with me, it totally changed how I perceived women (which led to a redpill realisation during this transformation).

I like looking at myself in the mirror. Well, not just looking - staring, from all angles. Feeling myself up. Ridges, cuts, veins and arteries and tendons i've never seen before popping out everywhere. Its awesome.

I'm getting less eye contact and more eye contact now - its weird. Some women (we're talking, around my age, average-looking) wont look me in the eyes, they just glance around while talking. Good-looking women are double-taking me, trying to catch my eye, seeing if i'll look back at them. I dont. Sorry, babe.

I started out lifting for improvement - now i do it to be better than everyone else. Physically, at least. I'm easily in the Top 5% of any gym i walk into but i wont stop until i'm Top 1% - or at least as close as i can get to it. Some of us (me) work manual labor jobs 50 hours/week so its not like i can work out all day like some of these goons.

Doesnt mean i cant look like i do though.

Nit pick: Nikola Tesla, while a god-level inventor and engineer, was never successful. He died in penury, eating nothing but soda crackers, in love with a pigeon that came to his window periodically. He is a cautionary tale of what happens when you create value for the world but let it bleed away without getting paid.

NEW OR SEASONED IN LIFTING, a word of caution. (skip to the bottom if the backstory is no interest) I have lifted on and off over the years. Recently was in the worst shape of my life. After a few comments from my gf and friends watching TV stars about " guys like that (referring to built guy)....." I said F*&k this and went back to the gym. I was lucky because we all have muscle memory. My muscle was coming back at an astounding rate, I was eating spot on. Lots of very lean meat, egg whites, and complex carbs. When I quit lifting previously my shoulders were very very strong considering my body weight.

Coming back in, not warming up as much as I should, not stretching as much as I should, and the muscle coming back fast lead me to a major problem I hope you all never have to face. I have a small tear in my rotator cuff now and can not bench press or shoulder press. Orthopedic surgeon said its physical therapy, maybe surgery. This didn't happen from one scary, "OUCH holy shit WTF was that" incident. It happened slowly, from repeated workouts (small repetitive trauma). I don't want to scare you from lifting, because I am still going. Finding other ways to hit the chest. The shoulders will never be like they were. And that sucks. Warm your shoulders up every time you do ANY upper body work. Take the 10 min. Use proper from when benching, squatting, deadlifts, shoulder press, and every other damn workout. Consider a trainer for just 4 sessions to get your form spot on. 95% of people in the gym have piss poor form. In hindsight, less weight and perfect form has gotten me excellent results. I was always in practice of good form, never the guy swinging the curl bar, but never uber strict. Now I am uber strict.

Yeah. Best benefits come from the development of the self. This is why those who win the genetic lottery and can put on muscle with little to no effort don't get laid because they buy into the idea that they don't have to waste time developing their game. But the fat guy who gets shredded in a few years can become the most humble alpha male in the world.

Lifting and martial arts would be two great things that not only boosted my confidence but let me truly understand the value of hard work.

It was a slow grind and it humbled me because I knew everyone that was better than me was probably at around the same skill level as me at some point.

It was rewarding to see how I gained something I know is only going to get better and push me in a positive direction.

I always wanted to push more and I continue to do so, mainly because after every session I've never finished it and thought "I shouldn't have done that".

Been lifting for a year and some months now, instarted the day after i found out my LTR of 2 years cheated on me. At first i lifted because i wanted to show her. Them after i fell in love woth bodybuilding and god addocted, my reasons for coming back in the gym changed. I loved being in that pain, grunting, having my body and muscles ache and be red, pumped, and veiny. Im a junky for it. All i want to be now is the top. Inwas 155 when i started lifting, now im at 173lbs.

So, I don't really lift. However, after discovering TRP, I realized how important exercise was.

I started getting up super early so I could run. Started doing pushups and situps. It was hard at first, but then I started to miss it if I went a day without doing my routine. Eventually, I got bored and stopped for a couple weeks, and still feel crappy when not doing it.

Now that I'm back at my university for the schoolyear, I'm going to start using the lap pool in the school gym to replace running (because swimming = cardio + strength; ie more efficient exercise) while still doing pushups and situps daily.

I find it's helpful to set one short-term and one long-term goal for every skill I'm looking to develop (ie begin, I don't need this for long-established skills/hobbies like reading philosophy or playing oboe). For this, the short term goal is getting a well defined torso. Visible six-pack and solid pecs. Long term goal (whether I actually do it or not), be able to compete in professional obstacle course events (like american ninja warrior).

I've stopped drinking and I've moved away from the hookup culture.

I hit my first anniversary of learning professional wrestling this week. In a year I've wrestled an ex WWE guy, a current TNA guy and an ex TNA guy in a steel cage.

I'm much happier with the results of a year's work than I ever was with 4 pints and a floozy.

Been lifting for 4 months now after letting my body go for a year. At first, the struggle was real so I set small goals from week to week. After the first 3 months and losing 30 lbs, it felt good.

The change came when I would wake up and have a craving. I fucking love those hostess donuts but haven't eaten them in forever since working out. Instead of breaking in and stopping at the store to get my quick fix, my body decides that it wants nurishment. So out if habbit, without thinking I find myself in the protien bar section instead of the fat ass section.

As an example of how the reward circuit works; in college I used to drink every fuckin day. Thanks to being a frat bro, 90% of my trips to the store would be for alcohol. It got to the point that if I went into the store to buy something else. If I was talking and not paying attention I would find myself staring 30s in the face. My body would just take me there even though I had no intention of buying beer.

I find my body starting to do it more and more, but with healthier alternatives. I had a mentor say this to a fat kid once and it's always resonated with me, "You don't have a weight problem, you have a mental problem. You tell yourself to put that food in your mouth. That's how you get fat."

Without getting super technical, it is the mechanic in your brain that makes you desire things. And this circuit can be rewired due to Neuroplasticity(Google it).

And what if your neuroplasticity is so fucked that you can't get into the reward circuit? When everything is so wired hard that nothing is rewarding and only increases thoughts about pain and death?

It's like you know nothing of mental illness at all. You've got no sense of how things are for those of us who are truly fucked. I can't be rewarded by anything; nothing is pleasurable. The only solution for me is a glass of Remington's Extra Strength Buckshot Mouthwash; if only I could be man enough to go through with it!
