Develop a hobby or passion that replaces the time you would otherwise spend smoking.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
More importantly, get some new friends that don't smoke.
So hard to quit when all your friends smoke around you.
[–]Rugnardl7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If you don't want to quit, then why are you trying? You have to find a reason to quit. Is it ruining your life? Are you spending too much money? Are you wasting your time? Is it lowering your image? Simply "disciplining" yourself for no reason sounds like a waste of your energy anyway. But if you can show yourself why you want or need to quit, you'll have better success. From what I gather, you have no real goal or incentives to achieve them.
[–]s0und0fyell0w3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
exactly. unless you have a legitimate reason to quit, why would you? smoking weed is fun. I mean if you are stoned every day you wont be a very productive person, but I get high once or twice a week and am still productive in the mean time.
[–]Guntlips3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I get stoned everyday(incredibly strong medical weed here in San Fran) and I am very productive. Own my own business and staying jacked and plate spinning. I work better high. My mind stays furtile, and everything is in high definition(no pun) perspective. Music sounds better, sex feels amazing, and food and drink are more enjoyable. Its all good lol.
[–]s0und0fyell0w0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
and I respect that pov as well. everyone is different, some people can handle it every day. some people say marijuana makes them feel spaced out and stupid, but other people use it as a form of meditation and it can heighten their cognitive experience. it is very much like meditation in a lot of ways, albeit sort of lazy mans meditation so to speak but the practices are certainly not mutually exclusive and can in fact enhance eachother.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Why quit? Enjoy it in moderation instead. Cannabis is a beautiful thing if used correctly. Use it for enjoyment and to better yourself, don't abuse it.
[–]esco_6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
There is an inherent problem with this idea for someone who is already abusing a substance:
They are likely to be having problems with impulsivity around the substance and "cutting back" is often a lot harder than just stopping cold turkey for a while
[–]Guntlips1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Everyone is different. Not everyone is going to be able to indulge without consequence yet there are lots who suffer no consequences at all like myself. Some people can't hand a drop of alcahol without falling into a downward spiral, but most can simply enjoy a nice premium lager at the end of a hard days work.
[–]esco_0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True. Current research suggests that whether you use/abuse a substance is mostly due to social factors. Whether you become dependent/addicted appears to be due to genetic factors

+1 for no smoking before lifting -- my concentration simply isn't as sharp as when I'm sober.

Yes. Running or cycling while stoned is quite the experience haha. For me it makes me aware of all my insecurities, so it's a good motivator.

seconded. it is useful for creative purposes, and introspection as well as occasionally just for recreation. now if you are the type of person who smokes every day because that is the only way you can cope with your problems then you have an issue, and there are people like that, but personally I can smoke a couple grams of weed one day a week and not think about it again until next weekend so I don't see it as a problem in my life. there are very few things that I would not ever do at all, the key is learning how to be moderate.

This post has absolutely nothing to do with TRP. Why the fuck is this not deleted by mods? In the signal to noise ratio, this shitpost is pure noise. "Wahh I can't quit pot" has NOTHING TO DO with sexual strategy for men.

this is a thing i had to deal with, for me it never was a problem. what was a problem was a lack of motivation to change what was wrong with my life and the reason there was no motivation was i felt my life was ok, and looking through the lenses of being high it was. i had food, i had a roof over my and my kid,s head i felt good all the time it was great....but what i did not see was what was missing from my life and one day i woke up was out of weed was close to 30 and i thought hey!! i have not really been sober for awhile and why not be sober and after a few days i started to see what my life really was....and i was pissed i started to understand that i had wasted 10 years of my life getting high and adding no value to my life i started to cut down made some changes got rid of my ex that did not want to change her life i moved. got rid of the friends that made it seem ok to add nothing to my life by staying high all the time. it was a bit hard at first mostly because i had grown used to getting high to have fun, watch tv, walk outside or even just hang out with someone. now please do not misunderstand me i do not think weed is a bad thing its not but i was using it to avoid making changes i knew at the back of my mind i needed to do. do i miss getting high? yes would i ever smoke again? yes would i go back to smoking weed all the time? no i wasted far too much time and i have not made up for it all yet. i think smoking weed is a fine thing once in a while but i am close to being 40 and take it from me i won't get that time back and neither will you. you may not have wasted as much time as i have but any time wasted not adding value to your life is a lose its not worth wasting any more time on weed build value in your life what ever that may be for you. to be blunt... yes pun intended there is no trick or hack i just got sick of it and mad about the time i wasted and i did waste it not the weed i take full responsibility for that and that may be your best bet in not smoking weed is in accepting that its you who is at fault for your life as it is not the weed. take care and relax its just weed it has no real hold on you as it really had no hold on me it was just an easy out, and when you see it that way i mean really see it as that. its a no brainer smoke it when your older when you have earned the right to relax.

Wow thanks man, this really actually helped a lot. Gave me a new perspective, I have a lot of work to do.
[–]vitent0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Alright so i was in the same predicament you're in. My whole social circle also smokes profusely as well and the best thing to do is to keep yourself occupied. I did this by lifting and working out. After the first two weeks, you'll notice the positives of not smoking and be mentally disciplined to not go back to it if you don't want to. Good Luck!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I also had a tough time with this a few years ago. The way I quite was getting a job that made me scared to smoke too frequently for fear of getting caught as well as being too busy pursuing professional goals. I lost my contacts for buying and stopped hanging out with people who smoked. I also got a little older and didn't enjoy being fucked up as much, and even felt like I couldn't really function or think at all when I smoked or got too drunk.
It's actually really tough to stop or even moderate if you're around people who smoke a lot. Not sure if this will work for you but my advice is: 1. Get really focused on a career. Put yourself in a position in which doing drugs or getting too fucked up can make it easy to make an ass out of yourself (really makes you think twice about doing something). 2. You have to either be incredibly disciplined or stop hanging out with your friends as much (especially if they smoke a lot). Seeing people have a lot of fun is addicting and it's tough to say no in these situations. Maybe also make friends who don't smoke to balance it out.
It's definitely tough to stay disciplined when it's all around you and it sucks to have to give some things/people up, but if it's the only way for you and you really want to stop, it's an unfortunate reality. Good luck to you.
but I cant exactly just replace them
You don't want to replace them, replacing them means finding others like them. You want to upgrade them. Find better people.
Also, you sound like a fucking fatass who can't stop eating. If you want to stop stop, don't meet people who smoke, don't go to places where you smoke, do something else and useful with your time.
Nothing worthwhile is easy, breaking bad habits aren't easy. Stop bitching about it, stop talking about, and just do it.
[–]tyofwa0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You didn't say why you want to quit. Either you need to stop for some Work related reason like a job or you are concerned about how consuming cannabis affects you. If it's the latter, then it may be effective to taper off the habit. I prefer to toke up late at night right before bed. I do this for two reasons- to limit the possibilitty of munchies, and to get a good night 's sleep.
As you can see from the comments, weed isn't intrinsically bad; it can be mentally addictive. If you sense that this became a vice, then the best advice would be to take a 6mo+ break. Make sure you are in control of the habit.
[–]esco_0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
There isn't a whole lot of withdrawal symptoms for cannabis dependence. You should be able to quit through sheer will power.
The main problems people have are with sleep disturbances (trouble wakening, trouble getting to sleep, wakening throughout the night, early wakening, etc etc). These typically resolve themselves within a month.
What you should do is take all your pipes/bongs utensils and weed and throw it in the trash. Get rid of it. This is an easy step you can take at a time when you don't feel like getting high.
Tell your friends "nah i'm good" if they offer to you. If they push, tell them you're trying to stop for at least a while. If they are your friends they will understand.
Honestly, without being physically addictive its more a mental struggle and routine etc you have to deal with. Take an honest look at yourself right now. Do you have the mental strength to stop smoking weed today? So fucking do it.
There are no tricks, there are no hacks. Man the fuck up and do it.
I started smoking when i was 15 and smoked pretty much every day until my early twenties. One day i had a realisation that i "just don't really want this shit anymore" and stopped cold turkey. I now smoke veeery infrequently as a social thing if i'm out fishing with some buds or something, and my life is a lot better as a result.
Obviously, the "harden the fuck up" approach is not pushed for most drugs, as there is physical dependence which the research suggests does not really manifest itself for marijuana. A psychologist would do a functional analysis to work out the reasons you smoke, which goes like this:
How are you feeling before you smoke, what are you thinking etc. How about just after you have smoked?
This will help them understand if you are doing it to avoid negative mood, or social problems, or whatever the case may be. They will then attempt to solve the underlying issue as well as getting you to stop the drug.
Have an honest look at yourself. You are more of an expert on your life than any psychologist can be. Are you doing it for reasons like these? It will make it much harder to stop, and you should probably seek help.
If you are just doing it as a social thing, then man the fuck up and cut it out dude. You can do it.

Thanks man, these are the hard hitting comments that actually help with problems. Not just "stop being a faggot and quit". I really appreciate it.
You should check out Graham Hancock's ted talk on "quiting the green bitch". Interesting stuff.
find a buddy that quits too. I'm 3 weeks in. Last weekend i was standing in front of the door with 10€ in my hand. At the last moment, what stopped me was that i would cheat my friend. smoked a sigaret and went back home strong
[–]Chlue0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You have to ditch your friends who are addicted to smoking, a popular saying goes: ''you are the average of the 5 people closest to you''. These people will hold you back. I've been there and had exactly the same. If you are not hanging out with people who smoke all day then it is way easier to quit, then it's just self control instead of constant exposure.
Let me give you a life hack. Only vaporize. Invest in a good vaporizer and only use that. I recommend a portable vape so you can use it when you're around your friends as well.
Since I made the switch, I still enjoy my cannabis but my mental frame is still strong and I can still get shit done.
If you don't realistically see yourself quitting, don't smoke, vaporize.
[–]omgimbackagain0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
People who are saying why quit, have no idea.
Monk mode OP take a month off friends and everything. Go hunting/surfing/camping or somthing (depends where you live).
you need to replace the time you spend getting stoned playing mario kart 4 player and eating pizza hutt with something else fun and or productive. Once you have done six weeks it is far easier.

Weed is like FAP and just as demotivating and destructive in large doses. However, Fap-ing and Weed in moderation is not harmful. Just understand that time spent high is mostly wasted time that could have been better spent.
TLDR: Moderation
Eat it in small portions. Like low dose kiva bars. Maybe try vaping instead. Switch to a CBD rich strain. Drink Coffee. Really good strong coffee. Do hot yoga. Or start running. Get a natural high/endorfin release. Have lots of sex. Why do you want to quit? I love medicating.
[–]the_nickster0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I know you said you want to keep your friends which is reasonable. But keep in mind that the nuclear option for ending drug use is cutting off all contact with anybody you know who uses marijuana, especially the dealers. Burn every number. Over time, you will at least conquer the psychological addiction and replace that coping mechanism with something else allowing for you to possibly reconnect with friends without succumbing to marijuana use. Because you have shown a proclivity for addiction, it's probably not a good bet to reconnect. Totally unqualified opinion taken from personal experience.

I'm in an incredibly similar situation. Started smoking at 18 with all my closest friends. Almost 23 now and still at it. Living with the same friends and smoking about two blunts per day. Up until recently I've blamed weed for making me lazy, spaced out, and anxious. Now I know better. It's not weed that's the problem, it's my perception of weed. It's my perception in general. Check out r/leaves.
[–]socio_j0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Its very hard to quit something if your whole social circle is smoking, you have already constructed your social ID based on weed. The only real solution is to change your friends. When I am with my friends who do not drink, I do not feel the need to drink as the social interaction does not revolve around drinking. So ask yourself why do you want to quit?
[–]Senior Contributorcocaine_face0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Practice self control. Keep pushing yourself longer and longer.
You're the one who does it, so stop it.
If you can't handle that, then don't buy more.
[–]2emptyform0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You have to be willing to change everything in your life in order to listen to your deepest truth. Your deepest truth may change later, but right now it is "I need to stop smoking marijuana." Put up or shut up.
[–]chuckthabuck0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Hey, I was a solid 5x a day weed hippie in my last two years of high school. Had mutltiple stints of quitting and went back. I am also a soon to be famous artist and the weed is very bad for my singing and I never get shit done, even writing music. Abuse of weed takes away it's creative effects. I told myself success isn't possible if I smoke habitually. Then I lost my appetite for it and only smoke on rare occasions.
Go check out r/leaves, and just remember that if you don't buy any weed you can't smoke any weed.

You have an addiction. Addiction is a disease. This does not mean you're helpless--it means you have to work harder than everybody else in order to live a fulfilling life. Research it and learn how to conquer it.
[–]NeopolitanAfterglow0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Addiction is most certainly not a disease.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
If there was no such thing as the disease of addiction, there would be no cigarette smokers.
Cigarettes taste awful and they kill you, yet some people smoke a pack a day until they die. This happens because nicotine is really good at convincing your brain that it wants more nicotine. Your emotions, your rational processes, your everything becomes bent to the purpose of getting more nicotine.
Sufficient exposure to nicotine will hardwire the brain to believe that it "wants" nicotine. Every thought, every plan, every desire turns into "I want to smoke a cigarette." People will have seemingly rational thought processes that always end up with lighting another cigarette. To a nonsmoker these thoughts are absurd; they only make sense to the person having them, and only because the brain has been rewired by nicotine.
"It's morning. I just woke up. I haven't had a smoke since before I went to bed. I want to smoke a cigarette."
"I'm stressed out and need to relax. Cigarettes relax me. I want to smoke a cigarette."
"I'm feeling really good. A cigarette would make this better. I want to smoke a cigarette."
"I'm depressed. Cigarettes stimulate me. I want to smoke a cigarette."
"I just had a cigarette, and I didn't enjoy it. Better smoke another one, I'll probably enjoy this one."
"These cigarettes are killing me. The stress of my health problems is really intense. I need to smoke more cigarettes to deal with it."
The same can happen with anything that "feels good." Sex, weed, alcohol, Reddit, gambling.
It's sort of like diabetes. There are lots of people who can eat sugar all their lives in moderation, they never gain weight and never have health problems. Some people have a genetic predisposition to diabetes and they have to avoid sugar if they don't want to suffer the consequences. Some people have to inject insulin because their body doesn't make enough. Some people have to avoid [insert addictive substance] because something in their brain is hopelessly susceptible to becoming addicted to it.
Self-discipline is a function of a healthy brain. An addicted brain is unhealthy. You don't beat an addiction with self-discipline. Do you heal a back injury by doing heavy squats? You have to heal the brain.
addiction is worse than a disease, because you do have control over that but instead let it ruin your life.
There is an abundance of solid research suggesting that it is a disease. Most addictions have been found to have significant genetic components (e.g. abnormalities in dopamine receptors)
That is very congruent with the definition of disease.

Quit being a pussy.
That's the trick.
[–]imalatewhiterabbit8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
This is the kind of reply I keep seeing on TRP that is completely inane and useless. "Don't be a pussy"???? You could have saved everyone 10 seconds by just not posting at all.
[–]cascadecombo1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because it's a real world answer, do you expect every single person you ask to give you some empathetic response?
If the guy wants to quit he has to stop being a pussy and quit. It really is the trick.

[–]-Asterion-2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I find "don't be a pussy" a great answer. To me TPR is at it's core is explained in that short sentence.
We (you me and every other here) have been given both the right and the duty to constantly better our-selfs. You do have the reins of your life. You are an intelligent human being capable of making decisions and accepting consequences. you should strive to be your best yourself and in those things that you cant be, you should at least learn to show some self-control. And you should do it, not for others but for you, because you are worth it. You deserve the benefits of thinking like a grown man, of planning for the future, of having patience.
You are the captain of your life, and you should be as decisive as a captain. In a case like OP's you either quit definitively or reach an equilibrium in which you are satisfied but one that doesn't make you feel guilty or like you are wasting time or potential.
There's only 1 Worthy judge. Yourself.
[–]imalatewhiterabbit0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Fair enough. I think the way that you have explained it is constructive. I think sometimes we lose site of the fact that many that come here have just swallowed the pill. That's mostly all I expect as an acolyte here myself, not to be mollycoddled, but to learn constructively. We want to be the vanguard that teaches the next generation of young men how to be men, we are going to have to explain things. Sure, telling someone not to be a pussy might be good advice in general, but it should be conceptualized at least a bit.
[–]1whatsazipper0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He's whining about his drug habit. That's the only hack or trick when it comes to drugs. You stop doing them. You don't put yourself in positions where you'd use them. You say no when offered.
It all boils down to having some dominion over yourself, exercising your will. In short, "Quit being a pussy." People looking for quick fixes, tricks, hacks, whatever, all end up needing the same thing: Balls. It applies to many things in life, anything that demands action but the person wants to be a passenger.
[–]redpillsam-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How old are you? Just curious.
[–]hungandslung-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I should have elaborated more in the post about myself, the reason why it's so hard for me to quit is because I already lift frequently (best shape of my life), and I have hobbies and interests. So it's hard when I'm tired from a long day to not go light up. The reason I want to quit is because I haven't been able to. Idk if that makes sense but that's basically the reason, if i can't keep a promise to myself to quit smoking, how am I going to respect myself you know? You guys have given me a lot to think about, thank yall so much. Except for the first guy who commented. You can suck a dick.
