It's too practical to be called anything else. It's a complement to the man program, which displays manual pages. bro is easily remembered because of the bro/man male association. It also conveys an informal, friendly tone simply in its name.

The locker-room atmosphere that stuff like this creates is a huge barrier to entry for a lot of people, women especially, who infer that on top of all the technically difficult stuff that everyone has to learn to be CS types, they'll also have to deal with a constant barrage of "you're not our kind" flung at them by the in-group.

what I would say: If you like the bro project, please help out. If you for some reason find the command "bro" to be incompatible with your political beliefs, you are free to fork the project (which is open source btw) and create a gender-neutral command, whatever. However, what is stupid, inane, and an archetype of "death by committee" is to argue about the name of the command before we've even started working on the project. We don't need anyone working on this who cares more about politics than functionality..

It's difficult for me to see how you read my post as suggesting that the awesome women I know (or women in general) are emotionally fragile. I really tried to go out of my way to avoid giving that impression; that's why I called them "unflappable", among many other things.

has me in stitches. The whole time reading this, I am reminded of this kid I know who is a digital design major who treats every woman he meets like some sort of goddess or some shit. I have trouble visualizing this guy here without seeing him on all fours, kissing the womens' feet with every other word.

Interestingly enough, this very issue is mentioned in Getting To Yes - a damn good book about negotiation if you have not read it - where the author mentions the problem in South Africa where the government officials appointed a committee (all white members at the time because blacks were not allowed in government) to amend the laws of the country to give the black population more rights. And in the process, they angered the very people they were trying to benefit because it just looks terrible when you try to tell someone "you are not being treated fairly! Here, let me speak on your behalf to the offenders and make sure that they treat you better from now on.

You are just making the people look like they are incapable of taking care of themselves and that they need you to be taken seriously.
