All aboard the history bus. Buckle up, we’re going on a trip. My name is /u/Halfjor and I’ll be your tour guide.
Many of you might know what the Renaissance Man is. The ideal of the Renaissance Man emerged during, you guessed it, the Italian Renaissance ~550 years ago (and the Northern Renaissance to a lesser extent).
One of the central ideas of Renaissance Humanism was that humans have an unlimited capacity for development. This meant that people should embrace as much knowledge as possible and expand their abilities to their greatest possible extent. This included intellectual, artistic, social and physical abilities and knowledge. An upper class man in that era was encouraged to be a skilled writer, a skilled conversationalist, know multiple languages, be well versed in art history, etc. “The Renaissance Man”
Now let’s jump back to today. 2015. The idea of the Renaissance Man is mostly forgotten. Children maybe get pushed into a sport and a hobby or two. When (if) you go to college, you decide what work you will be doing for most of your one and only life.
Despite this ideal not being encouraged, you (and I) admire a man who embodies this ideal, whether you realize it or not. Who would you rather spend time with?
Man #1 could tell you stories about living in India (read the post from yesterday), knows how to rebuild a car engine, sails, climbed Denali in Alaska, can explain the French Revolution from memory, knows 3 languages, is an avid runner, builds furniture, has strong political knowledge, plays golf, cooks a mean dinner, and flies his own Cessna, among many many other things.
Man #2 likes to workout, can tell you everything about his favorite sports teams, knows some cool spots to eat and hang out around town, and he has a good job.
I think most of us would answer Man #1. I refrained from listing Man #2 as "His favorite hobby is watching anime and he works in retail" because that's too easy. You can see that even a pretty good guy, above average looking, solid job, decent interests, is still blown out of the water by our Renaissance Man. Man #1.
Imagine these two examples being the same man, looks the same, body is the same, who took two different paths in life.
I implore you to take the path of the Renaissance Man. Start small. Next time something breaks in your house or car, learn to fix it yourself. If you're in college join new clubs. If you have the money and time take a trip far out of the country. Not a vacation on the beach, a trip. Walking, learning, socializing with the locals, tasting new things. Maybe start to learn an instrument that interests you. The specifics aren't the point, the point is the variety and depth.
The cliché goes "variety is the spice of life". I think that variety is also the spice in someones personality and identity. Expanding your experiences, abilities, and knowledge will help you in ways you wouldn't have imagined.
My buddy's older brother started off at the bottom of his company out of college. 3 months in, and he is the only one that didn't get the "no work today" memo. When he shows up the only person there is the boss, who comes in no matter what. They talk for a while, they both love golf. Go golfing the next weekend, boss likes him, promotions abound.
You can make new friends from all walks of life. You will be a man that people love to be around.
You want to talk about women?
Hooo-leee-shit. As a RP and Renaissance Man you'll need help fighting off the pussy. When the girl giving you IOI's all night overhears your friend mentioning something about you living in India her pussy is going to be wetter than the Pacific Ocean. How about when you're out of dinner and you can order in Italian at the restaurant you went to. You know well how she's going to feel. Women love mystery and experience.
Amused Mastery? You won't be faking anything. You are the master. You've stood on the peak of the tallest mountain in North America. You've literally sailed through stormy seas. Your plate's last accomplishment was getting 1000 followers on Instagram.
Abundance Mentality? You have more life experience so far than this girl will ever have. You've fucked women around the world. You're shit is locked down tight. Women become an accessory. Something to enjoy like a cigar or great wine. You don't need her.
The examples go on, and on, and on.
(As you can see I've framed you as Man #1 from above in these examples, but there are a thousand different interests, experiences, and abilities that could serve the same purpose.)
TLDR: Be the Renaissance Man. It's the best type of man you can be. Always find new interests, cultivate knowledge, and develop your abilities. Embrace the ideal.
